Your #Career : 3 Ways To Develop #TransferrableSkills In Your Current #Job …This Google #Recruiter Shares How he Leveraged his #Skills to #ChangeCareers , from #Sales to #Recruiting .

My first job out of college was in sales. Today I’m a recruiting manager at a global tech company in Silicon Valley. I’m also a podcaster. The one thing that connects the dots of my career trajectory and every job move in between: transferrable skills.

At the point that I decided sales wasn’t for me, I reflected on what I enjoyed (helping people), what I wanted to do next (HR), and what would be the stepping stone role to help me get there. It turned out that recruiting at a staffing agency was a good middle ground. Recruiting meant I’d sell companies to candidates and candidates to companies. I’d help job seekers take the next step in their careers while ensuring hiring managers had access to great people.

But before I landed a job as a recruiter at Google, I teased out the skills I needed to highlight in my resume and interviews–skills like the ability to build relationships, persuade others, and provide a high level of customer service. All skills that continue to prove key to this day, even as a podcaster. Here are a few ways you can identify and leverage transferrable skills to help you secure your next opportunity.

TRACK YOUR TASKS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

One of the biggest challenges I had for years was recalling everything I accomplished when it came time for performance review season. I’d sit there wracking my brain in hopes of recovering all I’d done over the past 6 to 12 months so I could write a stellar self-evaluation. Then one day I decided to start a project and task log that I’d update throughout the year. Recalling the details of projects became much easier.

This log also helped me identify skills and themes that’d be transferrable if and when I decided to make a move. It was easier to update my resume and speak to these skills during interviews because everything was already written down. Instead of searching for examples, I was picking from a list I’d already created.

I also encourage you to include projects, tools, and accomplishments from your extracurriculars, especially if you hold a role in a club, organization, or have a side project. Skills picked up outside the office can be just as valuable. For example, producing and releasing podcast episodes has required me to create workflows to get tasks done. Since I’ve documented them, a new team member can be dropped in and become productive right away. Creating and improving processes to drive efficiency is a key skill that’s transferrable to a wide range of jobs. It also speaks to problem-solving, as you’re usually identifying something that isn’t working well and then fixing it.

Podcasting has also provided me public speaking opportunities that have in turn made me a better presenter at work. I’ve learned the importance of storytelling, which is just as valuable when talking about data as it is when you’re trying to motivate a team to overcome a major hurdle.

LEVERAGE LINKEDIN AS YOUR CAREER CONSULTANT

LinkedIn is great for networking, but it’s also a great way to research what skills and experiences you need beyond what you find in job descriptions. For example, when searching for new positions, I’ve made it a habit to look up various versions of the job title and find people already in the role. Their career history and current responsibilities give me a blueprint for my resume and LinkedIn profile. I can create a list of the common themes across profiles and cross-reference my log to find relevant examples.

BE PROACTIVE ABOUT YOUR NEXT STEP AND NEW SKILLS

Even if you’re happy in your current position, you should consistently revisit what’s next in your career and if you have the skills to get there. After doing role research, you’ll sometimes realize you don’t have everything in the job description or all the skills you saw in other profiles. That’s okay. When you’re moving into something new–even if it’s within your field–there will be gaps. Your goal is to minimize these gaps by picking up news skills that can be transferred to your next job.

Maybe you realize the next target role requires in-depth quantitative analysis skills, which you don’t get to flex in your current position. You could survey what’s happening around the company and ask to be involved in a project that gives you more exposure to Excel or the opportunity to track and report on key metrics. Maybe you do the weekly or monthly team reporting in collaboration with your manager.

Perhaps there’s someone whose spreadsheet abilities make you wonder what you’ve been doing all your life? Compliment them on the great work they’ve done and ask if they can show you some of the basics. Nearly a year ago, I asked a respected program manager to show me how she keeps various projects and deadlines organized. With her help, I ended up developing a project tracker that’s helped me manage large cross-functional initiatives that involve many moving parts and people. This speaks to taking the initiative to develop myself and the ability to manage complex projects and deliver results–two things that are expected in nearly every professional position.

These are just a few ways to help you think about transferrable skills and navigate your career development. You’ll be surprised by how relatable your skills are to many different fields. The first step is to write things down. Once you do that, it becomes a game of plug and play. Happy hunting!

The U.S. has seen nine years of continuous economic expansion, allowing businesses to add jobs at a steady clip. Some particularly hot industries, like healthcare and tech, are hiring even more. With so many opportunities available, companies are working hard to attract the best and the brightest to their companies, which can result in improved benefits packages, higher salaries and other perks that entice candidates.

It’s important to remember, though, that these favorable conditions won’t last forever — after all, what goes up must eventually come down. Chamberlain’s advice: Take advantage of the job seeker’s market while it lasts. If you’ve been thinking about finding a new job, there’s no time to apply like the present.

2. Bolster Your Skills

Just because there are tons of open positions, though, it doesn’t mean that recruiters are lowering their standards — you’ll still be competing amongst other talented candidates. And as technology has advanced, employers expect potential employees to have more specialized, technical skills. One of the best ways for you to stand out from the crowd is to show employers that you’ve mastered hard skills like these. In particular, Chamberlain recommended familiarizing yourself with data analysis, as nearly all roles work with data in some form and can benefit from deriving insight from it. If data analysis isn’t your strong suit, consider taking an online course.

3. Include the Most Important Resume Info Up Top

Your resume is the first impression recruiters and hiring managers have of you — and if you don’t grab their attention, it will likely also be the last. The average recruiter only spends about six to seven seconds on a resume, so make sure it’s easy for the reader to gather all of the most important information with just a quick scan. One way to do that, suggested job search expert Scott Dobroski, is to include a professional summary up top that doesn’t just state who you are and what job you’re looking for, but the unique value you bring to the table and your most valuable skills.

4. When in Doubt, Write a Cover Letter

On most job listings, you’ll see “cover letter optional” — something that causes a lot of confusion for job seekers. Is it truly optional, or is it just a test to weed out less committed candidates? Most of the time, cover letters aren’t required, Dobroski said, but attaching a well-written one can only help your application. For one, it shows strong communication skills, which are a necessity for nearly any role, Chamberlain pointed out. For another, it gives you an extra chance to sell yourself. Cover letters should be quick, one-page documents that provide added color on why you’re interested in the opportunity, what you’ve achieved in your career, how you did it and why you’re a good fit for the job.

5. Research, Research, Research

The single biggest mistake you can make in an interview is not preparing for it beforehand. This means looking up the basics of the company (industry, products/services, recent articles), common interview questions (making sure to practice the responses aloud with a friend), information about your interviewers and more. This will help you come across as a more informed, passionate candidate.

6. Always Negotiate

One of the biggest misconceptions job seekers have about negotiating salary is that their job offer will be rescinded if they ask for a higher salary. But this is virtually unheard of — as Dobroski said, “I’ve never seen that to be the case.” So be comfortable asking for more, but make sure it’s based on hard data around what your market value is. Use Glassdoor’s Know Your Worth tool to help inform the range you ask for, although you should make sure not to start with your lowest acceptable salary in a negotiation! Finally, don’t forget to see if you can negotiate additional benefits — companies are often willing to accommodate requests for additional vacation days, workplace flexibility and more in order to seal the deal with a strong candidate.

7. Don’t Judge a Company By Its Industry

In the second half of the livestream, recruiters from FacebookSalesforce and Kaiser Permanente shared insight about their company cultures, how candidates can stand out and what they look for in interviews. One of their main pieces of advice for job seekers: Don’t assume you can’t apply to a company because of the industry they’re in! Claire Arnold, recruiter at Kaiser Permanente, shared that you don’t need to be a doctor or nurse to work at her company. While about 70 percent of Kaiser’s positions are healthcare related, they still have tons of open jobs in fields like administration, marketing, IT and more. Similarly, you don’t need to be a software engineer to work at tech companies Facebook and Salesforce. While yes, they do have many open technical positions, they also need talented folks in roles like sales, recruiting, finance, HR… the list goes on.

8. Ask Questions in an Interview

Even if you feel like you’ve gotten sufficient information already, you should always take an interviewer up on their offer to answer any questions you might have. In this situation, interviewers aren’t just trying to help you out — they also want to see if you can ask questions that demonstrate that you’ve done your research and have critical thinking skills. One question that Ashley Core of Salesforce loves to hear is “How have you given back to the community?” At Salesforce, community service is huge, so this proves that candidates did their due diligence in the research stage.

9. Don’t Take It Personally

Near the end of the livestream, recruiters were asked what the best piece of career advice they had ever received was. According to Facebook Recruiting Director Liz Wamai, it was “Don’t take it personally.” This is especially applicable in the job search. When you get rejected, it’s easy to get down on yourself, and think “What’s wrong with me?” But oftentimes, recruiters will pass on a candidate not because they don’t like them, but simply because they don’t have the right role for them at the moment or they need a little more experience under their belt first. If this happens to you, don’t get discouraged — if you keep applying thoughtfully and bringing your best self to the interview, it’s only a matter of time before you get an offer.

And There are Many of them That you can Get Under your Belt in a Relatively Short Period of Time — Even in Less than a Day.

You may find yourself with some extra time on your hands throughout the day. Perhaps you’re a fast worker, and play ‘run out the clock’ at the end of each work day? Or maybe you’re a student, with more time on your hands than you originally budgeted for. Either way, if you have some extra time, you should be putting it to work, rather than watching reality TV or playing Fallout 4 (though nobody would blame you for playing Fallout 4).

There are many ways to put yourself to work. You can exercise, which has been shown to improve cognitive function and productivity. You can catch up on some reading, and finally tackle that stack of classics that’s been collecting dust. Or you can get some sleep — that’s never really a bad idea.

But if you really want to add to your personal value and become more attractive on the job market, you can learn some new skills. And there are many of them that you can get under your belt in a relatively short period of time — even in less than a day.

We’ve listed seven of those skills below. Some will take more effort than others, but making the decision or commitment to learn any of them will leave you better off when you go to sleep tonight than you were when you woke up this morning. And if you have some extra time to spare, learning these skills can be as solid of an investment as there is.

1. Becoming a search master

Here’s a little secret that most of us are privy to, though we may not be aware of it: you can solve almost any problem with your smartphone or laptop. Seriously. All you have to do is Google (or Bing!) the issue. Odds are, a million other people have faced a similar dilemma, and there will be resources available to either walk you through it, or develop a strategy to tackle it.

The real skill here is in learning how to manipulate the search engine. Simple searches will get the job done nine times out of ten, but for very specific searches, learn to use advanced tips and tricks like quotation marks, site queries, etc. There’s a lot more to Google, Bing, and Yahoo! then meets the eye. Dig in and learn to use the depth of the algorithms to your advantage.

2. Financial literacy

Hate thinking about money? Scared to look at your bank account? Do terms like “401(k)”, or “stock options” get you frazzled? You may want to take gauge of your level of financial literacy, and if need be, give yourself a crash course. This is something that you could literally do in a day by spending some time going over personal financebasics, poking around financial websites, and reading some financial news. Financial literacy is a fairly big problem in the U.S., and making sure you know the basics can be invaluable.

3. Investing basics

Once you have some basic financial literacy, you really should learn the basics of investing. It’s not nearly as scary as you think, and the sooner you make the effort to learn, the better off you’re going to be in the future. You don’t need to go too in-depth either — just reading up on the basics of stocks, bonds, and basic investment strategies is enough to get you started. You can even talk to your employer about retirement plans, and head to your bank or credit union to see what investment products they have available. Within one day, you might be able to set yourself up for a glowing future.

4. Simple coding

You know you should learn to code. It’s becoming a fairly ubiquitous skill, particularly among the younger generations. It can give you an edge on your résumé, and help you work out simple computer issues — even help streamline your thinking patterns. And it’s not terribly difficult to do.

Use some spare time to work through some coding tutorials, like HTML or Python — whichever may be more useful to you. There are tons of options out there, from Codeacademy to Code School. You may literally walk into work this morning without a clue as to how your computer functions, and walk out with the ability to actually do a bit of coding.

5. Charisma

It’s hard to understate how important a sense of confidence is, especially in the workplace. It’s something a lot of people struggle with, but can make or break someone’s career. A big part of becoming confident is appearing confident, and having charisma can make all the difference. If you find yourself with some spare time, work on your charisma. It can be as simple as walking over to the coffee pot, or engaging a coworker in conversation. Pay attention to your posture, and speak with authority.

Before you know it, you may have planted the seeds for a new, confident you by the time you head for the parking lot.

6. Spreadsheet functions

If you really want to impress everyone, learning some fairly basic Excel functions and commands can go a long way. Excel and other spreadsheet software is often intimidating to a lot of people, but once you get over the initial anxiety, mastering it isn’t nearly as hard as you’d think. Take an hour or two and watch or read through some tutorials, and practice throughout the day. You could go home being the office’s ‘Excel wizard’ before you know it.

7. Healthy eating habits

You may not think that eating is a skill in itself, but you’re mistaken. How, when, and what you eat can have a big impact on your day, your levels of productivity, and even your mood. If you can take some time to put together a meal and snacking plan, or even just give some thought to your own eating habits, you could make a big impact on your daily routine.

If you need evidence that dietary selection is a skill, just keep an eye on your coworkers — watch how their diets affect their output. Lots of sugar, soda, and junk food? Probably not a recipe for success. If you have some spare time, do some reading, and put a plan together for yourself. It can make a lasting difference.

Over than four years, employers will seek employees with very different skill sets than they do today. In fact, on average more than one third of the desired skill sets of most occupations will be comprised of skills that are not yet considered important to the job today, according to a recent report from the World Economic Forum.

The report, called “The Future of Jobs,” surveyed executives from more than 350 employers across nine industries in 15 of the world’s largest economies to come up with predictions about how technological advancements will force the labor markets to evolve.

Here’s a look at the top 10 skill sets respondents said will be most in demand by 2020.

 

10. Cognitive flexibility will continue to be an important skill.

Cognitive flexibility is the ability of being able to think about multiple concepts simultaneously.

It wasn’t even a skill in demand in 2015, but will become more important during the next four years.

According to the report, respondents said that a wide range of jobs will require a higher level of cognitive abilities—which include creativity, logical reasoning, and problem sensitivity—as part of the core skill set.

 

9. Negotiation skills will still be in demand.

In general, social skills are going to become ever more important in the workforce. This makes sense because social skills are still something that, at least for the time being, are uniquely human.

By 2020, negotiation skills will particularly be in high demand in computer and mathematical jobs, such as data analysts and software developers, according to the report.

It will also be key skill in the arts and design job category, which includes commercial and industrial designers.

8. Service orientation skills will be important.

Service orientation is defined in the report as actively looking for ways to help others and it also falls under the social skills umbrella.

According to recent research paper by the National Bureau of Economic Research,strong social skills will continue to become more important as robots and automation take more jobs.

“The reason is that computers are still very poor at simulating human interaction. Reading the minds of others and reacting is an unconscious process, and skill in social settings has evolved in humans over thousands of years. Human interaction in the workplace involves team production, with workers playing off of each other’s strengths and adapting flexibly to changing circumstances. Such nonroutine interaction is at the heart of the human advantage over machines,” the paper states.

 

7. Judgment and decision making will become a highly desired skill.

Judgment and decision making was ranked as the 8th most in demand skill in 2015, but it will move up to the 7th spot by 2020.

This particular skill set is considered a “system skill,” which is the ability to analyze data to be able to make decisions.

As organization increasingly collect more data, there will be a greater need for employees who have the ability to analyze data and use it to make decisions.

 

6. Emotional intelligence is another social skill that will be in demand.

Robots may be able to do a lot of jobs, but they still can’t read people the way other humans can, at least not yet.

That is why it will become more important for employees to have a higher level of emotional intelligence. The ability to be able to be able to be aware of others’ reactions and to understand why they react certain ways will become a necessary skill for workers by 2020.

5. Coordinating with others is another thing robots haven’t perfected yet.

Again, this one also falls under the social skill umbrella and entails the ability of being able to adjust actions in relation to others and to collaborate.

4. People management is an ability that will be sought after.

People management entails being able to motivate people, develop employees, and identify the best people for the job.

The report notes that this skill set will be especially in demand for managers in the energy and media industries.

3. Creativity will become a huge quality employers look for.

Creativity will move from the 10th spot in 2015 to the top three skills employers are seeking in 2020.

With the onslaught of new technologies, creative people will be in demand to figure out ways to apply the new technology and create new products and services.

 

2. Critical thinking is a basic skill that will remain in high demand.

Being able to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of different solutions and approaches is a skill that will still be needed even though automation is becoming more prevalent.

Even with the increase in data to help make decisions, people will still need the basic skill of being able to solve complex problems.

Respondents to the survey ranked this skill as the most in demand in 2015 and it will remain the number one most desired skill in 2020.

In fact, 36% of all jobs across all industries are expected to require complex problem-solving abilities as a core skill by 2020, according to the report.
