#BestofFSCBlog : Over 12K Reads- A Crash Course In What To Do Before Going Into A Job Interview. Interview Coming Up? MUst REAd!

May 1, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

The more you research, prepare and practice before the interview, the better your chances of succeeding. In fact, the greater your knowledge is of the job at hand, the industry and your prospective employer, the more relaxed and confident you will feel.

Self-confidence will serve you well when interviewing for a new job, as interviewers pick up on this. If you come across confident and adept, you will be viewed favorably.

You can empower yourself by thoroughly reviewing the job description, conducting due diligence on the company, researching the interviewers on LinkedIn, cleaning up your social media footprint, role-playing interview questions and preparing the questions you’ll ask beforehand.

Be Courteous About The Dates And Times Of The Interview

Be reasonable and understanding when scheduling interview times. Politely ask the interviewers what days and times work best for them. Avoid requesting an early Monday meeting or late on Friday, especially during the summer or on the eve of a holiday weekend. By doing this, the company will recognize that you are empathetic and polite. It will immediately make you look good in their eyes.

Closely Read The Job Description

One of the first things you must do is thoroughly read the job description. You want to lead by letting the interviewer know you’re well-informed about the company and the job advertisement requirements. It’s appreciated when you can clearly and concisely match your background with what’s required for the role.

The interviewer will ask, “What do you know about our company?” In preparation for the meeting, you must scour the company’s website and the internet to learn as much as possible about the firm, its management team, products and services and reputation. You should also have a basic knowledge of what is happening in the industry and any challenges the company might face.

Showing you did your due diligence signals to the interviewer that you are smart, capable and interested in the job opportunity.

Find Who You Know At The Company

Tap into your network to find out if you have any connections at the organization. If so, reach out to them and politely grill them for all the insider information you can get, which will offer a competitive advantage. If you have a close relationship with a senior-level person at the company, ask them to put in a good word with human resources, the hiring manager or anyone involved in the interview process. The recommendation will go a long way and make you stand out, as this person has personally vouched for you.

Practice Outloud Your Elevator Pitch

Although you know what you do in your job and did in prior positions, it always sounds better in your head than when you say it out loud for the first time. To convey this seamlessly in an interview, outline an elevator pitch—a clear and concise 30-second to a one-minute advertisement about yourself. Keep practicing the pitch until you are on autopilot. Although you will have rehearsed it numerous times, avoid coming across robotically. The key is to let your genuine and authentic self shine through.

Role Play Answering Commonly Asked Interview Questions

There are several frequently asked interview questions, such as, “Tell me about yourself. Where do you see yourself in five years? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want to work for this company? Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge at work.” Research these types of questions and role-play answering them with a friend or colleague, who can offer honest and constructive feedback on your responses.

Conduct A LinkedIn Search Of Your Interviewers, As They Are Snooping On You Too

Interviewers and other people involved in the hiring process will peek at your LinkedIn profile and search your social media postings on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other sites. You want to make sure that there is nothing inflammatory that could cause a problem.

In the same right, you should conduct an online search of the interviewers to learn more about them. Seek out what interests and things you have in common. For instance, maybe you live in close proximity, attended the same college or are fans of the same sports teams. Small talk is an underappreciated skill. It’s a superpower. By having insights into the interviewers, you can break the ice by bringing up last night’s game or talking about your alma mater. You’ll create a quick bond, lending to a much more excellent collegial conversation.

Get The Inside Scoop From Your Recruiter

Ask your recruiter to share everything they know about the company, the people you’re meeting with, the corporate culture and any nuances you should know about. The headhunter will know about layoffs on the horizon, whether workers are happy or not and if there is a turnstile of employee turnover. If the search agent worked with the hiring manager in the past, ask what you need to know about the person, so you’ll have a vibe about the interviewer before you enter the room or video call.

What To Do Right Before The Interview

Don’t wait until the last minute for Zoom video interviews to check your internet connectivity, lighting, sound quality and background. Similarly, if you are going into an office, map out your commute days before the interview to gauge the timing and ensure you know where you are going. Arrive onsite early, have several copies of your résumé on hand and dress appropriately.

Before the interview commences, give yourself a pep talk. Use self-affirmations or mantras. Get your body moving to get your blood flowing and energy pumped up.

#JobSearch : Human Resources And Recruiters Are Getting Axed. Job Cuts this Year are the Highest Since the 2009 Financial Crisis. Thoughts?

March 21, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

A year ago, a study conducted by Workvivo, an employee experience engagement app, highlighted the challenges human resources professionals had to contend with at the time. The study surveyed more than 520 HR professionals in the United States and the U.K. on burnout in the HR department. Ninety-eight percent of HR professionals self-reported that they were experiencing burnout, while 94% said they felt overwhelmed and 88% of respondents said they dreaded work.

As a result of workplace transformations, HR navigated in-office, remote and hybrid work styles. They contended with the Great Resignation, sourcing, recruiting, onboarding and retaining workers. The war for talent took its toll, as HR professionals felt undervalued and under-resourced.

Human resources professionals are, once again, experiencing stress and anxiety, but this time for a different reason. Instead of being exhausted from all the hiring, HR, talent acquisition and diversity, equity and inclusion professionals are on the chopping block. A pattern has emerged: recruiters and HR professionals are let go when companies lay off personnel and enact hiring freezes. If there isn’t hiring, there is no need for this function. Relatedly, DEI teams are more quickly dismantled in the absence of a “talent war,” according to Bloomberg.

Recruiters Getting Cut

Recruiters are the canaries in the coal mines, as they know what will happen before anyone else. When the job market is blazing hot, headhunters are the rockstars held in high regard and relied upon to secure the best talent for their corporate clients. However, in recent months, the white-collar job market has been plagued with layoffs at several companies in various sectors.

In a challenging economic environment, the demand for recruiting services slows down. Once companies start letting go of recruiters, it’s a sign that the firm will increase layoffs and enact hiring freezes.

While other areas within tech companies saw headcount reduced by 10% to 20%, companies downsized 50% of tech recruiters, according to the Wall Street Journal. This means that there are now fewer qualified headhunters actively recruiting. Protocol reported, “Tech companies that have conducted layoffs this year eliminated around half of their HR and recruiting staffers,” according to a survey from interviewing.io. A year ago, tech companies couldn’t hire enough recruiters to fill all of the open technology positions. Now, the same recruiters have become job seekers.

Meta, Apple, Amazon And Twitter Let Go Of Talent Acquisition

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social media giant is reducing its headcount. “Recruiting will be disproportionately affected since we’re planning to hire fewer people next year,” Zuckerberg said in a letter to employees. Around 1,500 recruiters and human resource professionals were slated for layoffs, as part of the 10,000 headcount reduction and the elimination of 5,000 open job requisitions roles.

Elon Musk took over Twitter and quickly cut 30% of its talent acquisition team. The layoffs came after the company announced that it would be pausing hiring to cut costs. Tesla, also run by Musk, laid off recruiters. The EV carmaker’s remaining employees complained about the increased workload and pressure to stay productive, Business Insider reported.

Home rental firm Airbnb eliminated 30% of its recruiting staff. Microsoft-owned LinkedIn laid off workers in its recruiting department. Recruiting software company Gem—with over $100 million in funding and a $1.2 billion valuation— sent an email to 100 employees on the recruiting team, letting them know that they’re being let go.

Contract Recruiters Discarded

Over the last number of years, tech companies aggressively hired to keep up with demand. Recruiters and HR were needed to keep the pipeline of hiring constantly moving. The situation dramatically changed when the economy was impacted by a one-two punch of runaway inflation and high interest rates that impacted the tech sector. Suddenly, hiring stopped, and the firings commenced. Many of these firms utilized contract recruiters that were not employed, but hired by third parties. It was easy to swiftly dispatch the contractors, as they didn’t have the same employment rights and protections as full-time, permanent employees.

Toward the end of last year, Apple downsized about 100 contract recruiters. Amazon commenced laying off contractor recruiters prior to its tens of thousands of corporate job cuts. Google-parent Alphabet exited external recruiters, as it slowed hiring, according to the Wall Street Journal.

As a sign of the fast-moving shift in hiring, last April, companies were advertising more than 10,000 openings for tech recruiters—twice as much as the year before. By October, the number of tech-recruiter postings plummeted to around 2,500, according to ZipRecruiter.

Recruiters, HR and DEI

With fewer new hires to recruit, cost-conscious organizations are also trimming budgets for workplace programs, including diversity, leadership training and well-being. HR and recruiting roles accounted for nearly 30% of all layoffs in tech, training provider 365 Data Science found. Postings for general HR jobs declined 23% over the past year, according to Textio, a workplace software service.

To keep up with demand over the last three years and the overall aggressive hiring across the board at tech companies, businesses hired one full-time HR employee for every 69 employees last year, compared to a historical norm of one to 100, according to workplace consultant Gartner. Outplacement agency Challenger, Gray & Christmas points out that job cuts this year are the highest since the 2009 financial crisis.

#JobSearch : How To Find A Job Looking In All The “Wrong” Places. The Old Ways is the Best Ways of Securing a Job in Today’s Market.

March 14, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Over the past few months I’ve vocalized my thoughts on the current state of the job market and predicted what will happen next. I’ve discussed the trends— the tech layoffs, the flood of job applicants, the growing competition for remote work—and I’ve given job seekers strategies to take control of their careers despite today’s zeitgeist of overwhelming uncertainty.

It probably comes as no surprise that most of these strategies involve leveraging tools that help you stand out in today’s digital job market. After all, even older generations know a successful job hunt relies on mastering the newest technology.

An article published by AARP writes “Newspaper ads for openings have been replaced with online listings, and a computer is more likely to conduct the initial scan of your resume than a human being.”

Did I mention that article was published in 2008? Read that sentence with no context and it could very well pass as the broad opening to an article published this morning… But no, it’s been 15 years since newspapers stopped being the go-to for job listings. During that time, we’ve adopted other helpful gadgets like LinkedIn and Fiverr as well. Emails replaced letters and phone calls and referred job candidates to applications posted on company websites.

As technology took over the workforce, the places we once networked became desolate. To get a job in the modern workforce, a candidate must stand out in a pool of a thousand other digital profiles —and the survival of Darwin’s fittest is determined by LinkedIn hashtags and algorithms.

But old methods of job-hunting, though no longer popular, still exist. It’s because they are unpopular that they may very well be someone’s best shot at securing a job in today’s market. Instead of hitting you with a tech-savvy tip that will bring your LinkedIn profile to the top of employers’ feeds, I’m dishing out some old advice. This is the advice your parents heard from their parents, who likely heard something similar from their parents. It’s the advice that has been recited again and again, spit out and recycled, in one ear and out the other, passed along from generation to generation.

I’ve edited some of these vintage job hunting tips slightly so they still apply to today, but for the most part, they’re the same as they were decades ago. They’re also great ideas to try out when your digital job hunt leaves you stuck.

Pick up the phone.

For many millennials and Gen Zers, few things are less unpleasant than calling someone on the phone. Not only is phone phobia a real thing, there are actually people out there who charge as much as $480 dollars an hour to help people overcome it.

This presents a significant opportunity for other job seekers, especially those from younger generations. Curious about what job opportunities are available at a company you’re interested in? Pick up the phone and call. There’s a good chance the first person who answers won’t have most of the information you’re looking for. Ask if there’s a hiring manager you can speak to or someone with more information who can give you a call back.

Even if you speak to someone who refers you back to information posted on the company’s website, you never know what conversations are happening back in their office. Going out of your way to call the company and inquire about positions shows them you have serious interest, and there’s a good chance your name will be mentioned around the office.

Visit the library.

With access to online PDFs and digital libraries, visiting the actual library has sadly become somewhat of a pastime. People don’t realize that some of the best things about the library have nothing to do with books—many libraries offer career services ranging from tips on looking for jobs to reviewing your resume and helping you prepare for an interview.

These resources are great for anyone to take advantage of, especially those who have been out of the job hunt for a little while. Handing in a resume that is not only updated with your relevant work experience, but also fits “with the times” can make all the difference when it comes to getting a response. Plus, with ATS tracking softwares filing through most resumes these days, experts from your local library will probably have a few tips to help yours stand out from the pile.

Spend time in third places.

Gyms, community centers, coffeeshops, local restaurants, places of worship —these are all third places, or places outside the office that are vital to the community. Often, third places are where friends gather and information is disseminated. Leave your office and take your laptop to a coffee shop or rock climbing gym instead.

Keep your eyes open for bulletin boards and flyers highlighting any help wanted signs. Start conversations with baristas and gym rats and see where they lead. A friendly encounter may just lead to your next interview.

Attend networking events.

Love it or hate it, networking is here to stay. After all, you cannot beat the power of human connection! Before LinkedIn allowed us to skip the awkward small talk and “connect” seamlessly, developing a strong professional network relied heavily on networking events and conferences. Don’t let the number of LinkedIn connections fool you – connections made through social media platforms are rarely as impactful as those developed in person. Do a deep dive on some of the professional groups in your industry and create a list of networking events to attend.

Show up in person and dress the part.

Job interviews and professional networking events are not first dates: showing up overdressed won’t make the situation awkward. In fact, it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. When in doubt, wear a tie and fish through your closet for a pair of dress shoes.

Check the newspaper.

Despite what AARP said in 2008, companies still post job ads in newspapers. If you can’t find any in print, meet the employer halfway between an old-school tactic and tech-savvy maneuver– check what jobs newspapers have listed on their website.

#JobSearch : One LinkedIn Trick That Enables Recruiters To Find You. Here’s How to Set up #Opentowork Tag, so Only Recruiters See it.

March 9, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

People were skeptical when LinkedIn added the #OpenToWork feature a few years ago. Many job hunters worried that this tag surrounding their profile gave off an “I’m desperate” vibe. At that time, recruiters said it had no effect on them and that they ignored it. Fast forward to now. Things have changed a great deal because of the labor shortage. As we start seeing more layoffs and many people quietly job hunting, more people have been using this tag. But is there a better way to get recruiters’ attention without telling the universe you are job hunting?

Theresa Chow, Senior Recruiting Manager for Clark Nuber, shared her insight. “The #OpenToWork tag on a candidate’s photo doesn’t impact me. However, candidates seem unaware they can use that tag so only recruiters see it. Marking their profile as ‘Open to Work for recruiters’ makes it a searchable item for recruiters. I consider those candidates first as they are looking to leave versus those that are passive candidates. Usually, I start my search with the skillset and get hundreds of names. I can sort those so I see #OpenToWork candidates and contact them first. Only once I get through those individuals do I look at the passive candidates,” she says.

Another Senior HR recruiter said, “I like the tag because there is a higher chance that an individual might actually write us back! In today’s marketplace, we get ignored—a lot.”

Matthew Warzel, president of MJW Careers, noted that whether or not to use this feature is a personal decision involving your comfort level with publicly declaring that you are looking for a new job. Some job seekers may prefer to keep their job search private.

LinkedIn has reported that members who have added the “open to work” tag to their profiles are more likely to receive relevant job recommendations and more messages from recruiters. However, there is no guarantee that using this feature will lead to more interest. Numerous other search techniques, such as networking, should always be a part of any candidate’s strategy.

I had not been recommending using the #OpenToWork tag with my career counseling clients. But considering several recent conversations with HR people who explained that their talent search has changed due to this tight labor market, I now recommend that people use the Open To Work tag but make it only visible to recruiters. After all, those are the people whose attention you are trying to get.

Here’s how to set up #opentowork tag, so only recruiters see it. In the LinkedIn Recruiter help section they explain precisely how to use this feature to share with Recruiter privately they are job hunting. Only recruiters who aren’t affiliated with your current or related companies can view this tag.

To activate this feature, follow these steps on your Profile page.

Below your picture and headline, you’ll see the blue button “Open to.” Click on it and select “Finding a new job.”

Complete all the information requested. Note titles, locations, type of work—remote, in-person, hybrid.

Select Onsite location—identify where you live (select the city name if you are in a suburb).

In the Remote section, you can pick five locations to appear in searches. This makes locations a searchable item for recruiters so everyone should use it.

Select Immediately for the start date.

Select the Type of Work you desire—full-time, contract, etc.

On the bottom tab is a drop-down menu. Check the Recruiters only tab and they will be the only people who see the tag. (If you wish to make your search public, so anyone on LinkedIn can see this tag with its green label around your profile picture, click that option.)

Hit save.

#BestofFSCBlog : Over 9K Reads – How To Reinvent Your Career After A Layoff. Try Returning to This Job Market is Scary. Great Read to Keep your Head Together.

February 22, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Layoffs in the tech sector have been dominating headlines in a big way. If you haven’t been impacted directly, chances are you know someone who has. You might even be asking yourself the all-important question, “could I be next?” According to research by the staffing firm Insight Global, 78% of U.S. workers are concerned about losing their job. Not only does this create anxiety, but it also negatively impacts a person’s overall well-being.

Yet, despite the current job market, there is a silver lining. While it can be a traumatic, ego-crushing experience, a layoff isn’t necessarily a setback. In fact, if you handle it in the right way, it can lead to even better opportunities.

If you’ve been recently let go, it’s time to gain perspective so you can plan your next career move. Let’s look at some steps you can take to reinvent your career after a layoff and make the most of this uncertain time.

1. Take a pause

Whether it’s your first or your fifth, don’t underestimate the emotional toll of a layoff—especially if it took you by surprise. Once the initial shock wears off, take some time to process your feelings and what you gained from your work experience. Be prepared to slowly process a range of emotions from sadness to anger to possibly relief. This is also a critical moment to practice emotional and physical self-care. Take time to exercise or revisit hobbies you may have neglected for a while. Putting yourself in the right mindset will be important as you plan your career.

2. Reevaluate your values and priorities

Now that you find yourself with a clean slate, it’s time to hold on to what you value and let go of what you don’t. Reflect on your values and priorities and whether they were aligned with your previous job. If not, it might be time to consider a career change.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • Do I want a similar position?
  • Am I interested in working in the same industry?
  • Is it time to finally pursue my passion?

Then make a list of your top ten values and post it somewhere you can see it every day. That way, you’ll be more likely to keep them in mind as you strategize your next move.

3. Stay productive while job hunting

Contrary to the old adage, job hunting is not and should not be a full-time job. If you spend 40 or more hours a week looking for a job, you’ll go mad. Instead, create a schedule. For example, you might dedicate three days each week to your job search. Or you may decide to block off a few hours every day for those activities. The key is consistency. Think about what works best for you and settle into a daily routine. Also, make it a point to balance your job-hunting activities with other interests. For example, look for opportunities to volunteer, which is a great way to network while learning new skills and doing something good for the community.

4. Ask for help

Returning to the job market can be daunting, especially if you’ve been with the same company for a while. It’s also common for job search strategies to change over time. At this point, you may not know exactly how to build out your network on LinkedIn or optimize your resume for applicant tracking systems. That’s why outside experts can be helpful. Engaging with a coach or mentor will allow you to lean on someone with specialized resources and a fresh perspective. It’s also nice to have an unbiased party in your corner as you navigate the evolving employment landscape.

5. Remain connected

For many people, their work buddies are a big part of their social life. Leaving the company can be isolating, but it doesn’t mean you need to leave friends behind. During times like these, friends and co-workers can be the best people to lean on. If they don’t reach out immediately, it may be because they’re not sure you want to hear from them. In that case, reach out to your network when you feel ready. These days, many people are even using platforms like LinkedIn to announce that they are looking for a new challenge.

A layoff doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You can even reemerge from it more resilient than before. Just look at it as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. That way, you’ll be in the right frame of mind to create opportunities for yourself that you never thought possible.

With membership approaching one billion, LinkedIn is the most important personal branding resource. And despite LinkedIn being around for two decades, many professionals have not mastered this essential career management platform and they’re missing an opportunity to deliver an on-brand first impression.

Here are the most egregious LinkedIn profile mistakes to avoid.

1. Not Including Keywords In Your Headline

To help your profile show up prominently in the results, you need to include the words you want to be associated with in your headline. The first duty of your headline is to provide relevance. “Is this a person I need to know?”

2. An Anemic About

Your LinkedIn “About” section will be the most-read version of your bio, so you need to tell your story in a compelling way. And here’s the catch: When people look at your LinkedIn profile, they only get to see the first few lines of your About. Use those valuable words to grab your reader’s attention so they will click “see more” to get the whole story. Don’t repeat what you told us about yourself in your headline.

3. Ignoring The Featured Section

This valuable piece of digital branding real estate shows up toward the top of your profile and gives you a place to showcase your accomplishments, passions, and causes. And because you can include images, video and other rich media, it makes your profile more interesting to look at and more differentiated too.

4. Not Using Creator Mode

Creator mode is a relatively new feature that allows you to identify the top five hashtags with which you want to be associated. These hashtags show up right below your headline and reinforce the topics for which you want to be known. Even if you have no intention of creating content for your LinkedIn blog, turn Creator mode on and select your five hashtags.

5. Keeping The Boring LinkedIn-Issued Background

The best way to make your profile stand out is to include a one-of-a-kind, on-brand, copyright-cleared background (it sits behind your headshot and headline). It’s the first thing people see when they’re checking you out. When you incorporate an image that helps you tell your story, you automatically stand out from your peers and deliver a relevant first impression.

6. Using A Photo That’s Not A True Headshot

No photo. A logo. A full body shot. A picture where you cropped someone’s body out of the shot, but their arm is still dangling from your shoulder. These are all examples of what you should never do with your LinkedIn headshot. Your headshot makes you real, and it makes it more likely that someone will accept a connection request from you. Make sure your headshot is professionally done, reflects your personality and is cropped so that your very human face occupies 60-80% of the space. When someone is looking at your profile on their phone, your headshot is the size of a button. Make sure people can look you in the eye.

7. Not Reordering Their Skills

LinkedIn displays your skills in order, based on the number of endorsements each skill has (from highest to lowest). When someone checks out your profile, LinkedIn only shows the top three. That’s a signal to the reader that those are the things you are best at. Yet for many of us, those may not be the things we want to be known for or the things that make us relevant for where we want to go next. Reorder your skills to showcase the three most important ones at the top.

8. Using Words Without Rich Media

It’s hard to create a visceral emotional experience when you’re limiting yourself to the 26 letters of the alphabet, but when you augment your prose with images, infographics and videos, you can truly dazzle your audience with your brilliance. Your profile is replete with places where you can leverage rich media to tell your story: your Featured artifacts, your Background image, in your Experience and Education sections, your Video Cover Story, etc. It’s hard to inspire people online, but using multimedia is sure to deliver more YAY and less YAWN to your readers.

#JobSearch : 5 Tips To Pass The Resume 30-Second Test. That is the Time you Have to Engage a Recruiter. A MUSt REAd.

February 2, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

You can spend hours crafting your resume and conducting your job search, but today’s labor market can be competitive, and you need to go above and beyond if you want to stand out.

As if that wasn’t tough enough, recruiters will only dedicate a short amount of time to scanning your application. In fact, if you want to be shortlisted for an interview, you have as little as 30 seconds to impress them.

The good news is, there are some steps you can take to perfect your content and format your resume as effectively as possible. This will make it much easier for the recruiter to find those all-important details.

But how do you go about passing the 30-second resume test?

Tailor every application

Writing a strong resume can be time-consuming, so it’s understandable that tailoring every application you submit can feel like a lot more work. However, recruiters have become wise to this over the years, and they can spot a generic resume with just a quick scan down the page.

Generic resumes look lazy, and unprofessional, and suggest that you don’t have a genuine interest in their job role. Therefore, it’s crucial that you tailor every resume to the specific position and company before you submit your application.

This will require a certain amount of research, as well as using the job description to highlight important keywords and shape your content.

Engage the recruiter immediately

Your resume needs to start with a professional summary that grabs the recruiter’s attention immediately. As a senior professional, this should be a short summary that includes your current position and years of experience. You must show your relevance to the role and highlight your key achievements.

This section must also be tailored to the specific position and company. As we’ve said, a generic application won’t cut it, and if you get this wrong in the first instance, your resume is sure to end up on the rejection pile.

An engaging and focused summary will hook the reader and convince them to keep going, getting past the 30-second mark and increasing your chance of being invited in for an interview.

Keep it relevant

As you gain more and more experience, the list of things you can add to your resume will only grow. The problem is, with just one to two pages to impress, including every job you’ve ever had is unlikely to get you over that 30-second hurdle.

Recruiters only want to see your most recent and relevant experience, qualifications, and skills. With this in mind, it’s a good idea to review all your past positions and only go into more detail about those that are relevant to the role. For example, it’s unlikely that if you’re being considered for a senior position, that the employer will want to read 10 bullet points about an internship you did over a decade ago, so cut it down or remove it completely.

This is important because the recruiter will not waste time wading through chunks of irrelevant text. If they start reading and the content quickly seems unrelated to the role they’re hiring for, you’ll simply end up on the rejection pile.

Be specific

The more specific details you can give about what makes you great for the job, the better.

So, when describing your experience, avoid giving generic explanations and give specific details instead. This includes quantifying your achievements to show how you made a real impact in past roles.

This will also apply to your key skills. For example, if you know how to code, be sure to list the specific programming languages you understand. Alternatively, if you are proficient in several types of accounting software, be sure to name the exact tools you’ve used.

Think carefully about structure and readability

Of course, the content of your resume is absolutely vital, but so are readability and structure. If your resume is poorly formatted, the recruiter might not give it any more than a quick glance. So, in order to make it easy for them, you must use headings and subheadings to structure your information and guide the reader’s eye.

Bullet points are also a great way to break up chunks of text because large blocks of text can be very off-putting. As can quirky or hard-to-read fonts, so it’s crucial that you choose a standard font that makes your resume easier to scan through.

Finally, it’s a good idea to think carefully about how you structure your content. As a more senior professional, it’s likely that your skills and experience will take precedence over your education. So it’s better to put these sections closer to the top of the page.

You’ll be able to get a better understanding of what the employer deems most important when you look through the job description.

By following these five tips, you can quickly engage the recruiter and ensure that your resume makes it as easy as possible for the reader to see that you’re a good fit for the role. This is how you hold their attention for at least 30 seconds and secure yourself an interview.

#JobSearch : How To Land Jobs That Aren’t Advertised. Best Way to Stay Away from the Stack. Great REad!

January 19, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

When looking for a job, many will start with job boards and Google searches to find open positions, which makes sense. The problem is, if you rely solely on these tools, you will only find those positions being advertised to thousands of other internet users.

It is only when you look beyond these platforms to the hidden job market that some of the most exciting opportunities present themselves.

What is the hidden job market?

For those who are unaware of this hidden job market, this refers to job openings that may exist but are currently not being advertised online. There are several reasons an organization may choose not to actively advertise a position, perhaps they intend to hire internally, or they rely on employee referrals.

It might also be that a newer role is still evolving and they’re not set on how to define the job title or daily responsibilities. But if you sit back and wait for this position to appear online, you might miss your chance of landing your dream job.

So, by looking beyond the jobs posted online, you’ll open yourself up to a whole host of new opportunities, but how do you find a job if you don’t know the role exists?

Reach out to your network

Over the years, it’s likely that you’ve built up a network of connections in your industry, and you should never stop expanding this network.

When looking for your dream position, it’s a good idea to reach out to relevant connections and let them know that you’re looking for work. You should also give them an idea of your skills and experience, as well as how you believe you can help their business.

This can be done by email, simply asking if they have any positions going. Alternatively, you could set up a business meeting to discuss this with them in person or over the phone.

Turn to LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a great way to continue growing your network, but it also presents you with lots of other techniques for finding unadvertised jobs.

Firstly, you could share an update letting your connections know that you’re available for work and your credentials. This might encourage them to reach out and let you know about positions within their company.

Alternatively, you can join industry-related groups where you can share interesting insights and join relevant conversations. Getting your name out there and being part of the conversation increases your chance of being approached with exciting opportunities.

Attend industry events

Trade shows and industry events can be the perfect way to meet others in your industry and open yourself up to unadvertised positions.

Before you go, it’s a good idea to put together a quick elevator pitch and keep this at the forefront of your mind when meeting new people. You should also take with you an up to date copy of your resume, or at the very least, a notepad and pen so you can jot down email addresses and fire over your resume when you get home.

You might even wish to volunteer at these events, showing your passion for your industry and giving you the opportunity to network with lots of like-minded professionals and organizations.

Start with the company

Job hunting doesn’t just have to be about looking for the perfect role; in fact, in many cases, it pays to start with the company instead.

If there is a specific organization you’ve always dreamed of working for, this is the ideal opportunity to reach out to them and find out if they have any positions available. Just because they may not have advertised these online or on their website, it doesn’t mean the position isn’t there.

So get the contact details of the most relevant employee, for example, the in-house recruiter or the manager of your chosen department. Then, you can contact them with your resume, outlining why you think you’d be an asset to the company.

Suggest freelance work

Finally, and this will very much depend on the type of work you do, but if there is a specific company you want to work for, you could consider completing some freelance or contract work with them first.

Reach out to the relevant employees with your pitch, explaining your services, past experience, and how you can add value to their business. Then, if they think your services could be beneficial, you’ll have a chance to work with them, get to know more people in the company, and learn about any open roles.

In fact, if your freelance abilities are as good as you say they are, they might offer you a full-time position before you even enquire.

As you can see, when you’re job hunting, it always pays to be proactive. That way, you’re more likely to uncover unadvertised positions and secure your dream role.

#JobSearch : Monster Survey: 96% Of Workers Are On The Job Hunt. Be Prepared- A White-Collar Recession Starting to Take Place.

January 18, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Monster, one of the early online job boards, reported that 96% of workers are hunting for a new job this year, according to its December survey on job search plans and the 2023 United States job market outlook. The respondents say that they are seeking higher compensation.

About 40% of job seekers said they need a higher income due to inflation and the accompanying rise in costs. Sixty-six percent of the 930 poll respondents believe that it will be challenging to find a new job, and more than 10% report that they may have to take a pay cut due to the current economy.

Vicki Salemi, Monster’s career expert, told CNBC that even compared to the Great Resignation, the number is “phenomenally high.” In 2021, at the height of the Great Reshuffle, nearly 48 million people quit their jobs—an annual record.

The Hunt Begins In January

January is historically one of the best times to engage in a job hunt. The beginning of a new year is ripe for change. Even though it’s only flipping a page in the calendar, mentally and emotionally, it feels like a fresh start or a do-over from last year. Along with the New Year’s resolutions of losing weight and going to the gym, seeking a new job is one of the most common resolutions.

This year, it’s likely that more people will start looking for a new job for several reasons. They need to increase their compensation to keep up with inflation and rising costs. With layoffs becoming relatively commonplace, if a person is feeling ill at ease at work or worried about being selected for downsizing, it’s rational to start getting in touch with recruiters, going on LinkedIn to network and hitting the job boards.

Right before Thanksgiving, there’s a steady deceleration in job-search activity. People start taking their personal time off, going on vacation or just trying to relax and recuperate. The hiring process slows down, as there is a collective, unspoken agreement to take it easy.

However, by the second or third week of January, it’s the adult version of going back to school. Human resources and talent acquisition are nudged by hiring managers to send them résumés and get the hiring process started, as they need to get through the work that’s piled up over the holidays.

Be Prepared: It May Be Tougher This Year

There is a white-collar recession starting to take place. College-graduate office workers in tech, Wall Street, media and other sectors are seeing significant layoffs.

When companies are downsizing people, they usually also enact hiring freezes, as they’re trying to cut costs. Just because there is a hiring moratorium doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply for a job. Certain jobs are required, such as compliance officers, and the companies will make exceptions for these must-have personnel.

As the Monster survey suggests, many people will be searching at the same time, so there will be intense competition. Job seekers must get started before everyone else also embarks on their job searches. Update your résumé and LinkedIn profile, contact recruiters, visit job boards, prepare and practice your elevator pitch and network.

Hiring Managers Need To Get Ready Too

Hiring managers need to get in gear too. They have to create job descriptions and ensure they are up to speed with newly enacted laws or bills pending, such as disclosing salaries or ranges on job advertisements, asking a candidate about how much they earn, and the possibility of doing away with non-compete contracts. A bill was recently introduced by the New York City Council that would make it illegal for employers to fire people without a good reason. The bill will offer security and protection from a manager capriciously firing a worker, if approved.

A steady flow of layoff announcements targeting professionals working in tech, Wall Street, media and other sectors could signal the beginning of a white-collar recession. The downturn in the economy is changing the worker-employer dynamic. Companies, after contending with the Great Resignation and consequent labor shortage, are now gaining the upper hand.

Bob Iger, the former and now once-again CEO of Disney, made one of his first orders of business to bring back workers to the office four days a week starting March 1. Salesforce co-CEO Marc Benioff chastised employees in a Slack message complaining that the company’s newest hires aren’t being productive, according,  his standards. Starbucks’ interim CEO Howard Schultz was displeased that employees disregarded his return-to-office request and is now requiring office workers to return for three days a week.

The tide is turning on the professional class. In prior economic contractions, it was usually the blue-collar and front-line workers who bore the brunt of job losses. This time, it’s different. Highly compensated, white-collar professionals are currently the most impacted by layoffs

The Change In Power Dynamics

During the pandemic, employers pandered to their workers, as it was exceedingly difficult to recruit, onboard and retain people. Record-high inflation, rising interest rates, China’s restrictive Covid-19 policies and other factors contributed to a more challenging environment. Now, business leaders are focused on reigning in expenses, cutting costs and letting go of employees.

Even the best-run companies face challenges in swiftly changing economic environments. In a letter to employees, Salesforce, the biggest private employer in San Francisco, announced that it was laying off 10% of its approximately 80,000 workers. Benioff also questioned why the subscription-as-a-service tech giant was facing “lower productivity” from its newly hired employees.

He raised rhetorical questions, such as, “Is this a reflection of our office policy? Are we not building tribal knowledge with new employees without an office culture? Are our managers not directly addressing productivity with their teams? Are we not investing enough time into our new employees?”

At Starbucks, Schultz asserted that the global coffee chain should remedy the unintended consequences of remote work. He contends that the company is losing the art of collaboration, doing work in silos prevents actual prioritization and his employees are losing their connection with a shared mission by not being together.

Iger mandated Disney employees to work in-office four days per week, saying “in a creative business like ours, nothing can replace the ability to connect, observe and create with peers that comes from being physically together.”

The Shift In Fortunes Between Blue And White-Collar Workers

According to the Wall Street Journal’s reporting of the recent jobs report, hospitality, leisure, manufacturing and retail laid off fewer workers than white-collar workers from September to November compared to a year earlier.

Average downsizings in the financial and insurance sectors from September to November nearly doubled since the same time last year. Real-estate layoffs increased by more than 20% over the same period, and by 14% in the information-technology sector. Job listings on Indeed.com for human resources and talent acquisition roles were down by about 36% last month from a year earlier.

The Wall Street Journal predicts that blue-collar workers stand a better chance than white-collar professionals.

Jason Calacanis, a venture capitalist and the host of the All-In Podcast, tweeted about the white-collar recession, “…The white collar recession is very real [and] it will increase.”

It doesn’t look like the prospects for white-collar workers will improve anytime soon. The World Bank cut its global growth forecasts and foresees a worsening in economic conditions, CNBC reported. According to the World Bank’s latest Global Economic Prospects report, conditions could cause the third-weakest pace of growth in nearly three decades, ranking up with the global recessions caused by the pandemic and the global financial crisis.

The most recent Conference Board survey indicated that most executives don’t foresee more robust economic growth in the near term. More than 50% of CEOs worldwide and 60% of U.S. CEOs anticipate a lackluster 2023. On a positive note, the report shows that the executives feel there will be a pick-up in economic growth by the end of the year or into mid-2024. The chief executives are concerned over labor shortages and talent retention, once again showing how the current downturn strikingly differs from past tough times.

Despite the belt-tightening measures, old habits are hard to kick. Despite Goldman Sachs’ announcement to lay off around 3,200 workers, CEO David Solomon and other top executives were questioned over the costs of using private jet trips, according to the Financial Times.
