#Life : 9 Ways To Stay Mentally Strong In This Chaotic World. A Must REad for All!

Life is not easy for most people lately. The Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc, causing a brutal health, economic and jobs crisis. Since mid-March, 40 million Americans have lost their jobs. Those who hold a job are worried about its long-term safety. We’ve been locked up indoors with our homebound children, as schools were closed.

 

Business owners watched helplessly, as their companies have been ordered to shut down, raising concerns if they’ll be financially ruined. Over the last eight days, we’ve seen well-meaning, peaceful protests held for George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer, infiltrated by people who use it as an excuse to riot, steal and commit vicious, violent acts.

On social media, at the family dinner table and in small gatherings, we fight each other about politics. There’s a built-up tension in the air that’s creating animosity, fear and hate. It also makes people feel despondent and depressed. We worry about our physical safety, job security and financial situation. It takes Herculean effort to get up each morning, dreading what new problem we’re going to have to deal with today.

1. Things may be awful, but that doesn’t mean you have to feel awful.

You can control how  you view, process and react to events. Most people handle stress and unfortunate circumstances with a knee-jerk, panicked response. They dwell on the worst-case scenario happening.

Instead of habitually doing this, take a deep breath, pause, then analyze the situation. Look at it head-on with clarity and objectivity. “Is this really bad or am I overreacting?” Even if you’re in a tough spot, you need to find the mental fortitude to think of positive solutions to make things better.

2. Try to put aside your negative thoughts.

We’re constantly overwhelmed with bad news lately. The negativity can be debilitating. While it’s not easy, tune out the noise. Accutane is available in two dosages. I was prescribed the drug at a dosage of 20 mg twice a day. It is preferably to take tablets on a full stomach, so the drug is far better absorbed. As for the side effects I experienced terrible dry skin of face and lips (I had to buy the fattest and the most effective creams for skin regeneration). It didn’t cause any serious side effects. In the first month of taking the drug I began to notice that new inflammations ceased to appear. During the second month I felt much better and the inflammations began to pass away. My doctor told me, that I should not be hopeful because of this petty victory and interrupt the course of treatment.

Focus on what you want to achieve in your life and career. Design a game plan and put systems into place to achieve your goals. Replace bad thoughts with positive ones. The more time you allocate toward constructive contemplations centered around self-improvement, the less time you’ll spend ruminating about matters that just wear you down.

3. Stop caring about failing.

Go after what you want with gusto. No one will hand you a job or opportunity. You’ll need to make your own breaks in life. Keep in mind, the more you try to achieve something, the greater amount of times you’ll fail. That’s okay, as it’s part of the process. Failing is a way to learn from your mistakes.

Take stock of what you did right and the mistakes you made along the way. Accept what happened without beating yourself up over it.

Then, hyperfocus on what you need to do to improve, grow and develop, so you can succeed the next time around. You either win or learn. Life is one big learning session. The lessons learned from falling down will help pick you up in the future.

4. You can’t take life personally.

It’s not just you. We all get rejected, doors slammed in our faces, lose out on a promotion and not get called back for a second interview.

In our society, people tend to brag about and broadcast on social media all of the cool and awesome things that are happening in their lives and careers. We then falsely assume that everyone else is doing great, while we are personally struggling. You’re comparing yourself to something that’s not real. The Instagram photos are manufactured, cultivated fake realities.

Mentally tough folks don’t take the obstacles, setbacks and hurdles personally. They recognize that it’s all part of the game we’re all playing.

5. No one is entitled to success.

It takes a lot of time, planning, hard work, execution and luck to succeed. Sometimes luck’s not on your side. This shouldn’t stop you. If you keep trying, eventually things will turn out in your favor. Remain calm, cool and collected. Understand that there will be highs and lows and try to ride out both with professionalism and grace.

Most people give up too soon. Look at your career as a marathon and not a sprint. Maybe it’s more appropriate to view it as a Tough Mudder course. You’ll need to scale walls, climb ropes, wade through mud and endure grueling obstacles designed to test your endurance and strength. It’s the same thing when you try to attain career success.

6. Avoid getting goaded into arguments with strangers on social media.

It’s a no-win proposition. Your blood pressure rises, you get aggravated and nothing gets accomplished. There’s the risk of saying something inappropriate in the heat of the moment that could later come back and haunt you when a hiring manager checks your social media footprint.

In all the times you have spent on Twitter and Facebook, when have you ever read, “Hey, thank you! You’re right and I’m wrong. You convinced me. That was a brilliant point that you raised. I appreciate it!”?

The algorithms are rigged to trigger anger, rage and jealousy. Spending too much time on your phone isn’t good for your mental and emotional health. Mentally tenacious people practice avoiding all of the noise and distractions and stick with hyperfocusing on their goals.

 7. It’s natural to be afraid of trying something new.

We all worry about pursuing a new job, romance, friendship or potentially life-changing endeavor. Fear of the unknown can be daunting and debilitating. It becomes easier to simply stay where you are. However, if you do that, you’ll be stuck and never improve or grow.

Mentally rugged people may be afraid, but they forge ahead anyway. They’ll still be scared, but they won’t let it stop them from achieving their goals.

You can start small with a little mental hack. Embark on hobbies or activities in which you can score some easy points by doing them well. This will instill confidence. As you build up small incremental successes, you’ll then feel comfortable taking on new and bigger challenges.

8. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Avoid getting roped into petty nonsense. We all take to heart a mean comment made by your boss, co-worker or a salesperson at a department store. Some get enraged when they’re cut off by a bad driver or a rude customer-service person.

The trick is to take these things in stride and not let these petty annoyances ruin your day. After all, you don’t know what the other person is dealing with and what they’re going through. If you hold onto that negative energy, it won’t let you focus on what really matters most to you.

Mentally strong people brush these nuisances off their shoulders and move on with their lives.  They save their strength for the important struggles, which yield meaningful results.

9. Learn to say “No.”

We have a tendency to want to be liked. When you’re asked to commit to a business function or social engagement, you feel obligated to say “yes.” It’s difficult to turn down opportunities, as you risk alienating the other person, but sometimes it’s more productive to just say “no.”

You only have so much time and energy and need to be discerning in how you allocate precious moments of your life. You know when something will be a time suck, distraction and make you feel bad. When something does not fit into your overarching life plan and long-term goals, have the courage to politely turn it down.

We’re all subjected to constant pressures that can break us. If you work on building up your mental strength, you will be able to have better clarity, focus, less stress and the ability to pursue and achieve your goals with a clear mind.

Maybe your job isn’t great. Or, you hate your apartment. Those coworkers you have are so annoying. Or, you may be dealing with life challenges like illness, job loss, or sudden caretaking responsibilities that are getting in the way of some other things that you want to do.

Into each life, some annoyances, obstacles, and misfortune will fall. And while some self-help gurus will tell you to simply ditch what’s making you unhappy or holding you back, sometimes, it’s not that easy.

“Everybody has those constraints and situations that we don’t want to be in,” says licensed clinical social worker and resilience expert Linda Hoopes, PhD, author of Prosilience: Building Your Resilience for a Turbulent World.  You don’t want to get stuck there, but sometimes, you’re stuck with them for the time being.”

But there are things that you can do to make many situations better and cultivate greater resilience, even as you look for long-term solutions or resolutions, she says.

1. HONOR YOUR OPPONENT

It’s easy to ruminate about why you’re stuck in a bad situation, but challenges are where we learn, says performance coach Bob Litwin, author of Live the Best Story of Your Life: A World Champion’s Guide to Lasting Change. Litwin works with professionals in high-pressure jobs, such as talent agents and hedge fund managers. And sometimes, having a difficult boss or set of circumstances can be a gift.

“Adversity is the ultimate great teacher,” he says. As an elite tennis player, he says his toughest opponents were the ones who made him better. While the difficult situation may seem “just awful,” sometimes they “bounce you in a better direction and teach you how you’re going to be in that situation,” he says. Simply understanding that you have an opportunity to learn from your challenges can give them some previously unseen value, he says.

2. BREAK IT DOWN

Many big challenges are really a series of smaller challenges that can seem overwhelming. When you break down the individual components of a situation, they’re easier to address, Hoopes says. For example, a “crappy” job may break down into unpleasant interactions with coworkers and long hours that affect family time. Break down the individual components of what’s making you unhappy, and they’ll be easier to address, she says. Prioritize those that are draining your energy most, she adds.

3. CHANGE WHAT YOU CAN

Even within a bad situation, you can make small changes to improve it and turn it into motivation to make bigger changes, Hoopes says. You can look for opportunities to learn new skills, even in a job you hate. If you’re managing caretaking responsibilities, you might be able to enlist help from others to get some time for yourself. Think creatively about your situation and how you might be able to make small changes to improve it, she says.

In addition, stop beating your head against the wall trying to change things that you can’t, says Paul G. Schempp, PhD, a research professor at the department of kinesiology at the University of Georgia. “We see this with highly successful athletes. Often, people who are less successful focus on things like injuries or ‘The crowd doesn’t like me,’ or ‘I’m not getting enough playing time,’ so they start on this downward spiral, because all they see is the negative things,” he says.

When you start letting go of things over which you have no control and focusing on the things you can improve through small changes, it’s easier to get out of that trap, he says.

4. CHANGE YOUR STORY

When you’re dealing with obstacles or adversity, change the story you’re telling yourself, Litwin says. The way you think about or explain your situation is your story—and most stories have flexibility about them.

“Even if somebody is saying, ‘My situation is much tougher than what you’re saying to me,’ I would say, ‘Okay, well, that’s good, because that story can be flipped too, which is, the tougher I am, the more focused I am at making changes of who I am in order to accomplish what I want.’ We know that plants, when they’re not given that much water, often become stronger because their roots have to work harder to find the water that’s there. That’s a better story about literally plants in dry soil, that they do amazing with very little,” Litwin says. Reframing the issuein this way can make a world of difference in how you view and respond to your circumstances.

A useful tool here is tracking your progress, Schempp says. When you focus on the small changes you’re making to improve things or move away from your challenges, you immediately shift to a place of taking control and making a difference. He refers to a Harvard University study about the “progress principle,” where acknowledging small wins was found to be a powerful motivator.

5. FIND YOUR CALMING PRACTICE

Even as you make changes, it’s important to understand how to calm yourself down when you’re feeling the stress of your challenges, Hoopes says. Whether it’s going for a run, spending some time in your garden, or finding a couple of hours to catch up on a favorite television show, take that time to push your personal “reset” button.

6. DON’T LET OBSTACLES DEFINE YOU

When you’re stuck in a tough time, it can be easy for your self-talk to be dominated by the situation. Remind yourself that your situation doesn’t define you, says counselor and coach Anahid Lisa Derbabian. “Begin to notice critical or discouraging thoughts or words, which can in subtle ways sabotage yourself and keep you stuck. In the moments when you realize that you are doing this, do not blame or shame yourself. Just allow yourself to shift into messaging, which is compassionate and helpful to you,” she says. If possible, ask for help from family or friends to help you recognize these patterns—and also to assist you in making changes or finding the resources you need to do so.

Most of all, use your situation as a source of motivation to make long-term changes that will help you find lasting solutions or ways to adapt to your situation, Hoopes says. “[fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][There is] a Buddhist saying, ‘Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.’ Life just has this stuff in it, and it’s just, ‘Okay, here I am in one of those zones. Now what am I going to do?’” she says.

Motivation isn’t a switch that you can turn on or off. At work you’ve probably found that motivation comes pretty easily when the company is doing well, and your efforts are rewarded. When a company is in trouble, however, it’s not always that easy. You might be expected to take on additional responsibilities and pull extra hours, but without the recognition and compensation that you would have received when the company wasn’t in crisis mode.

 

Many workers today accept that job security is not as prevalent as it once was. Allison Gabriel Rossetti, an assistant professor of management/organization and psychology at the University of Arizona, says that when it comes to jobs,”There’s definitely been a lot more volatility.” When a company experiences volatility, it can bring a sense of uncertainty among its employees. “We know from a job-stress perspective that ambiguity and stress is going to hinder an employee’s well-being,” Gabriel Rossetti adds.

There are steps you can take to maintain your motivation. With the right attitude, you might just be able to turn the worry into a career-growing opportunity.

 LOOK FOR MORE WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE

When you’re worried about the security of your job, taking on any extra work might be the last thing you want to do. But Gabriel Rossetti says that offering help when you smell trouble in the company is a great way to increase your motivation. She suggests telling your manager that you’re sensing some problematic signals, and that you’d love to help out in any way to move the company forward. By doing this, you’re focusing on solutions rather than ruminating on the problems. And when you feel like you’re making progress, even incrementally, motivation is easy to come by, as Jane Porter wrote in a 2016 Fast Company article.

GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR INTRINSIC, RATHER THAN EXTRINSIC VALUES

Motivation comes from wanting something. During tough times, it can be difficult to rely on extrinsic motivation like snagging that title change, or a bonus or raise that you might not receive this year. Intrinsic motivation, however, is easier to tap into. When your “why” for your work is more than just your paycheck, you can derive happiness in doing the work itself. In Are You Fully Charged? The 3 Keys To Energizing Your Work and Life, author Tom Rath cited a research that discovered West Point cadets who enrolled due to intrinsic motivation (i.e., desire to serve) were more likely to graduate, become commissioned officers, receive promotions, and stay in the military than those who enrolled to get better jobs and make more money. Gabriel Rossetti suggests asking yourself the following questions: “I entered this job and company for a reason. What were the values I saw here? What are some things I do in this role that reflects those values?”

FIND AN ACTIVITY OUTSIDE OF WORK THAT GIVES YOU MEANING

If the crisis has forced you to take on activities you care very little about, but life circumstances dictate that you need to stay in your company, find an activity outside of work that can give you intrinsic meaning. This way, you’re not coming to work deprived of that fulfillment and into an environment where everyone is on edge. And as Jared Lindzon previously reported for Fast Company, certain hobbies like improv can even train you to thrive in uncertainty.

FOCUS ON ONE SMALL SUCCESS A DAY

When it seems like a company’s situation presents a barrier to your long-term career, it’s easy to focus on the things that you’re not accomplishing. But chances are, you’re probably still experiencing small successes every day, but you’re not seeing them as a “win” because you’re too focused on the “bigger” task of navigating the company crisis. Completing a project is a win, and so is making that difficult phone call when you really didn’t feel like making it. As Vivian Giang previously reported for Fast Company, “Small wins matter big. It’s that tinge of excitement that helps us move forward during that long, uphill battle. Small wins signal to our brain that progress is happening, and big results are just around the corner.” Now that’s motivation.

As you look at your core beliefs about yourself, you will see those beliefs reflected back to you in every area of life from finances, reputation, success and love. People with an unshakable belief in who they are focus their minds on opportunities, the bigger picture, patience, resilience, and achieving. They strive to feel deeply happy and satisfied in their lives. People with winning attitudes deeply believe everything they set their mind to is something they can achieve.

1. Think positive.

Each of us has the power to choose and to direct our thoughts in any direction we want. Thinking optimistically keeps life flowing forward in the direction of our thoughts because our actions naturally follow our thoughts. For positive thinking to work we cannot passively think and expect miracles. We have to back our thinking with hard work, follow through and determination. We are all destined for success and can all get there if we believe we can. We have to put action behind our beliefs, and add a touch a patience to our perseverance. Many people become impatient when their positive thinking doesn’t immediately manifest success. That is because positive thinking, not backed by hard work, reduces positive thoughts to a wish.

2. Goal-digger.

To develop a winning attitude we must experience winning. For this reason we need to create agendas backed by achievable goals set with target dates for their achievement. My amazing business coach Dr. Dave White tells me we overestimate what we can achieve in a year, but largely underestimate what we can achieve in five years. In our sessions we goal set, explore, plan and achieve something each week. Small achievable goals motivate and inspire us towards our larger goals. Each goal achieved builds confidence and makes the journey towards success enjoyable.

3. Be a ‘passionator’.

To be successful in all areas of life, we have to love what we do. Waking up to a career we feel no passion for will not provide well for us emotionally, even if it provides for us financially. The growth we can experience, personally and financially will be limited when we feel we are just going through the motions to make money. The greatest successes love what they do, and know that what they do spans larger than their own self-interest. It is when we see that what we do makes a positive, and significant difference in the lives of others that we most want to jump out of bed in the morning.

4. Gracious.

When we live with grace instead of entitlement we do not expect anyone to do the hard work for us. We do all we can to propel our success forward. We are not afraid of the hard work required of us to succeed. No one owes us anything. There is nothing more career crushing than an entitled person. They are poor relationship builders, self-centered, tend of bully and are some of the biggest complainers in the corporate world. We must have patience, be gracious, help others, and ask for help when we need it. We must commit to working hard, being thankful and accepting that things are often unfair. We accept if there are goals to be achieved, we must depend upon ourselves to get them done.

5. Keep good company.

We are a direct reflection of the company we keep. Emotions and attitudes are contagious. For this reason we should make it a point to avoid, or largely decrease, the interactions we have with people who are jealous, overtly negative, defeatist or who gossip. We cannot get anywhere when we carry this type of an emotional infection. We must fill our lives with people who are confident, supportive, happy, optimistic, realistic, hardworking and motivated. This type of energy propels our movement forward.

6. Grit.

Success is always about persistence, determination and the stubbornness to never give up. Setbacks and rejections are a part of any great endeavor, so we must stay driven and optimistic. Rejections and setbacks are what help us explore, grow, solve our problems and increase our knowledge to do better going forward. When we have a winning attitude we see that failures are opportunities, not insurmountable problems. They are springboards to further success and direct us to the places where we need growth and reinvention.

7. Believe in yourself.

We have to focus on developing and working on our unique strengths in order to develop a strong belief in ourselves. We have to step outside of what is familiar for the sole purpose of increasing our self-knowledge and personal development. There is not a perfect person out there, so we must remain humble and inspired to work on improving our shortcomings, while not punishing ourselves over them. We can learn ways to work with them, such as delegating out, rather than letting these aspects of ourselves bring us down down. We have to faith in who we are.

8. Be inspired.

Read. All the great successes read. It’s amazing the type of inspiration that can come from reading about other inspiring people. We must spend our time with people who inspire us, and model what they do in their lives in our own lives. Inspiration can be found from family members and loved ones. It is important to look for relationships which inspire us to be better; seek out coaches, therapists and teachers. We can also find a deep sense of inspiration through helping and serving others.

9. Good health.

Being in excellent physical condition generates a tremendous amount of positive energy. We are a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual being. If our physical body is not healthy it directly decreases our emotional, mental and spiritual health. When we are physically active our bodies produce the feel good chemicals which effectively medicate stress, anger or despair. For this reason we need to take care of our basic physical needs, not just because it is the source of true wealth, but because it generates us to carry a positive vibe about us.

10. Social support.

We live up or down to the expectations and/or beliefs others hold of us. Those people who express their belief and faith in us, our purpose and our agenda in this world serve to deeply motivate us to continue on our mission with a sense of purpose and passion. The faith and belief to come from others, whether that be our manager, our family, friends, our coach, or those we manage serve to keep us on our toes and move us deeply into our personal commitment to our careers.

The stronger we gear our thoughts and actions towards success, the more quickly we develop it. It isn’t about pretending bad times don’t exist. It is about focusing our minds on the opportunities which can come from our bad days. When we have an unshakable belief in ourselves we posses a deep knowing that we have what it takes to overcome and continue to achieve. Once we achieve consistent positive beliefs in ourselves, our potential exponentially increase. We learn that obstacles are the experiences we need to further train ourselves to grow, remain flexible and move forward with a deeper sense of knowledge. Are optimists born or made?  We tend to think of those who see the sunnier side of life as having been blessed with a positive disposition. And it’s true that some significant portion of our happiness is probably determined by our pre-set tendency towards melancholy or cheer. But according to science, positivity is also very much a skill you can learn.

Just like you can exercise daily to build your body’s capacity for lifting heavy objects, it turns out you can also adopt simple daily practices that will rewire your psychology to tend more towards a positive outlook.

That’s according to self-growth expert Megan Wycklendt, who recently took to Fulfillment Daily to outline ten simple but powerful habits anyone can adopt to shift their mindset andincrease their happiness. Here are just a few of her suggestions in brief (along with links to additional resources backing up her claims).

1. Keep a gratitude journal

I’ve spoken to a good number of happiness experts and every single one of them mentions this practice in one form or another — find a simple but structured way to force yourself to count your blessings. Wycklendt endorses it too, explaining that “science has found that gratitude can significantly increase your happiness, and protect you from stress, negativity, anxiety and depression.”

Why is gratitude so powerful? Apparently, being thankful literally rewires your brain to help you more easily see the positive in life.

2. Practice being rejected

This might sound like a crazy idea, but apparently plenty of famous people actually set out to do mortifying things and be ridiculed by others in order to build their self confidence. According to Wycklendt, this technique has value even if you’re not hoping to host a late night show like Conan O’Brien.

“Rejection is a skill,” she claims. “Chalk [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][up] every broken heart and failed job interview as practice because no one gets to slide through life without being rejected.”

3. Avoid complainers

Complaining has memorably been described as the equivalent of emotional farting in an elevator. Would you stick around for dozens of floors with the guy who clearly ate too many beans for lunch? No, I’m guessing you would not. For similar reasons you should start making it a habit to quickly exit the situation when others around you start to whine.

“A study done at the Warsaw School of Social Psychology shows that complaining leads to lower moods and negative emotions, decreased life satisfaction and optimism, and emotional and motivational deficits,” reports Wycklendt.

4. Breathe

You spend your entire life breathing, so it can be easy to forget just how powerful taking a moment to focus on your breath can be for your psychology. “Our breath changes depending on how we feel,” explains Wycklendt. “The great news is that the connection goes the other way too. We can also change how we feel using our breath.”

5. Notice the righteous

Sadly, we live in a world that gives us plenty of reasons for heartbreak and worry. But even when the headlines present a parade of horrors, there are always glints of generosity, bravery, and the beauty of the human spirit shining through the darkness. Get in the habit of looking for them, suggests Wycklendt.

“In every instance of natural disasters, war, traumatic experience, you will find people rising up, reaching out to each other and showing raw compassion and love. Hold onto the stories of modern day heroes and selflessness in the times of fear and devastation,” she advises.
