Building connections can be challenging, especially if you’re just starting your job hunt or trying to expand your professional circle. The numbers tell the story: a 2021 study revealed that personal and professional networks decreased by 16%, which reflects the growing difficulty many experience.

Let’s face it—networking is often easier said than done. Your typical events can feel faked and forced, making it hard to find genuine conversations. Why not shake things up by exploring outside the usual? Here’s a rundown of five inventive strategies for growing your network, especially if conventional methods aren’t your style.

Check Out Niche Social Media Groups

Although social media itself isn’t new, many platforms now feature niche groups that can open doors for networking. You can create genuine connections in smaller, more specialized communities on Reddit, Discord, and Facebook Groups by answering questions, offering to help, and sharing your thoughts. Furthermore, this can help show your value and establish you as a trusted community member.

Adding interactive micro-content to your social media posts, such as polls on Instagram Stories or LinkedIn, is another approach to elevate your networking. These are fantastic for sparking more active and personal conversations. Also, try jumping into Twitter chats or even hosting your own. These live, topic-driven discussions are a great way to demonstrate your expertise and connect with people who share your interests.

Keep Learning

Continuing education offers plenty of opportunities for lasting connections. Whether you’re taking a course, attending a webinar, or participating in a workshop, these learning activities bring together people with a common goal of expanding their knowledge. You can build strong relationships with others while discussing, working on projects, and solving problems.

These connections go beyond the classroom and offer new perspectives, potential collaborations, and mutual support. Aside from networking, continuing education keeps you updated on the latest industry trends and skills, strengthening your position in your professional community.

You can start by figuring out what you’re into or what skills you want to learn. Look for relevant classes, workshops, or conferences through professional groups, community organizations, or platforms such as Coursera, Eventbrite, Udemy, or LinkedIn Learning. Don’t just observe—get involved! Ask questions, participate in discussions, and connect with new people.

Engage Others Through Your Content

Instead of always looking for connections, try making content that attracts people. Creating short articles or sharing insights on hot topics in your industry can get attention and grow your network. You don’t have to be a professional writer—just somebody who knows their stuff and can articulate it effectively. Putting out valuable content can start many interactions and help people remember you.

Begin by figuring out what issues or trends your audience cares about. Then, create content that provides solutions or fresh insights. Share it on LinkedIn, Medium, or your blog, and promote it on your social channels. Engage with people who comment or share your posts, turning those into meaningful conversations. You can develop an organic network built around your expertise by consistently following these steps.

Explore Other Circles

If events within your industry are starting to feel bland, it may be time to look into similar or altogether unrelated fields. Going beyond your usual circle can help you develop fresh ideas and get those creative juices flowing. You might learn new methods, strategies, or concepts that give you a competitive advantage.

Networking at these events can lead to unique partnerships. You might meet someone with skills that complement your own, opening up opportunities for really cool collaborations that neither of you would have explored on your own.

When you get out there and mingle, you’ll also meet experts with different backgrounds and viewpoints, helping you broaden your horizons. For instance, a marketing strategist might gain new insights by attending an event on data analytics, or a product designer could find inspiration at a conference focused on behavioral psychology.

Volunteer Strategically

Supporting a cause comes with some fantastic benefits. First off, giving back to a community or organization that matters to you is rewarding in and of itself. Plus, many leaders engage in community work through charities, making it a fantastic way to meet other driven individuals aligned with your values and passion.

Some employers also view extensive community involvement positively on resumes. In fact, a study by Deloitte found that 82% of those involved in hiring said that listing volunteer experience in a resume makes it more appealing. Even if you aren’t actively networking, mentioning your volunteer work on your resume or portfolio can help you improve your professional image.

To make the most of volunteering, pick a nonprofit or cause that aligns with your ideals and interests. Consider offering your time or professional expertise to support their mission. For instance, many small organizations could use a hand with event planning, bookkeeping, social media, or IT.

As you become more involved, joining committees and boards is the next step in improving your networking game. Sometimes, you might need an invite, but you’ll get noticed if you put in the work and build relationships.

Networking doesn’t have to be by the traditional playbook. You can foster professional relationships anywhere, and these creative strategies can make it more exciting. By thinking outside the box, you can turn your professional connections into meaningful relationships and find new avenues for growth and fulfillment in your career and personal life.

#JobSearch : How To Network. for People Who Don’t Like The Idea Of Networking. As an Introvert, Here are a Few Approaches that Work.

I’ve never been comfortable with the notion of networking, at least in the conventional sense of the word. I’m an introvert, and I haven’t been able to figure out the art of moving in and out of conversations during, say, the cocktail hour at a conference. I’d much rather have a long discussion with one person, and so my default strategy is to spot another introvert and approach them.

But it is important to build a network, of course. Your career path, after all, is going to be determined as much by the people you know as the work you do, especially if you’re ambitious. “When you talk about getting to the most senior levels, it’s less about the work and more about the network and your impact and how you market and brand what you’re working on,” said Mary Elizabeth Porray, global deputy vice chair for client technology for EY, the consulting firm. “So make sure that you’re focusing 50 percent on what you know and 50 percent on who you know.”

If you’re a fellow introvert, or the idea of networking feels transactional, then here are a few approaches that have worked well for me over the years.

60-Second Research

In my line of work, I meet a lot of new people, mostly on video calls. I always make it a habit of taking a minute before the call starts to check the person’s LinkedIn profile and social-media feeds. I’m looking for things we have in common. Maybe they spent a few years working in journalism early in their career. Or perhaps they’re from Canada originally, like me. Or perhaps they went to school in New Orleans, where I live now.

Those points of shared interest or background help create instant connections. Best of all is that they feel authentic, rather than forced. I do this with pretty much everyone I’m about to meet in a business context, and I’m always puzzled as to why more people don’t do the same. The return on investment of that 60-second search is huge.

Work On Something Together

To me, the best way to build a lasting relationship with someone is to work on something with them, rather than just sharing a coffee, drink or meal. For example, companies are always forming committees to work on some new initiative. Raise your hand. Show colleagues what you can do, make an impression, and be reliable. Treat it as if you were auditioning for a new job. Impress people and they may think of you when an opening comes up.

More companies are starting internal gig platforms so that workers can move around and build new skills. Take advantage of them and build your reputation as a reliable team player. And look outside, as well. Industry associations offer great opportunities to build connections. Or join a nonprofit. Don’t feel like you have time? Remember that work tends to expand into the time you have to do it, so those other meetings can act like forcing functions to get you to work smarter and in a more focused way on your day job.

“Play In Traffic”

I first heard that memorable phrase—“play in traffic”—from Joseph Plumeri, who was CEO of Willis Group HoldingsWSH -0.6%, an insurance brokerage, when I interviewed him. “Everything that I have done started because I went out and I played in traffic and something happened,” Plumeri told me. “It means that if you push yourself out there and you see people and do things and participate and get involved, something happens.”

And that doesn’t mean that you should say yes to everything. Figure out a useful framework for what you sign up for and what you turn down, because “no” is an important word to add to your vocabulary. For me, the simple filter has always been, is this directionally in line with where I want to go? If it would broaden my skills as a journalist (earlier in my career) or if I would learn more about leadership (the current chapter of my career), my default was and is to say yes. I figured I’d learn something new and perhaps expand my network, and I’ve now got enough years under my belt to see the benefit of playing in traffic.

#JobSearch : 4 Thoughtful Questions To Ask When Networking. Question- Do You Know How to Network for a Job?

The most thoughtful questions to ask when networking are tailored to the person you’re talking to, as well as the issue you’re discussing. If the issue at hand is that you’re looking for a job, ideally you have researched the general career path for your target line of work, so your questions uncover new insights or nuances not easily available to the general public (i.e., what an employer really wants) — this can help you advance your job application. If the person you’re talking to is someone at a target employer, ideally you have researched the company and/or job opening enough so your questions uncover specific hiring priorities — this can be a deciding factor in the job interview process.

That said, sometimes you don’t have advance preparation time to do any tailoring – for example, if you’re meeting someone for the first time at a conference or other professional event. In that case, tailor as much as you can, and keep in mind some untailored but still helpful questions that can work in many situations. Here are four thoughtful questions to ask when networking:

1 – What brings you to this event?

This is a friendly and easy way to open a conversation with a stranger, but importantly, this question zeroes in on your new contact’s priorities. The best networking is focused on the other person, so understanding what they’re looking for can help you help them. You might be able to make introductions for them to others at the event, or in your follow-up post-event you might share a helpful article or make meaningful recommendations because you know what they’re working on.

2 – How did you become [ROLE] or enter [INDUSTRY]?

Usually people introduce themselves by talking about where they work and what they do, or it might even be on their name tag (e.g., accountant at EY). Asking about their origin story is a friendly way to learn more about their background without sounding like you’re interrogating them. How did you get into accounting? Have you always been an accountant? Have you worked at EY your entire career?

People love to talk about themselves and wax nostalgic about their early days, so it’s a fun question for your new contact. For you, it’s an opportunity to learn about their background and gauge how you want to tailor the conversation and follow-up going forward. If there’s overlap between their career path and what you are targeting, you may want to schedule further conversation post-event to ask more questions later (you never want to monopolize someone’s time at an event where there are others they may want to meet). If there doesn’t seem to be an obvious collaboration opportunity, you can focus on making more of a social connection for now (this is still valuable since you never know who or what people know, and your overall network is critical to tapping the hidden job market).

3 – What do you love most about working in [ROLE or INDUSTRY]?

In addition to or instead of asking about someone’s origin story (question 2), you can ask what they love most about being an accountant, working in the accounting industry or working at EY specifically. This is a positively framed question, which encourages your new contact stays to keep a happy state of mind. It’s also an open-ended question (not a closed, Yes or No choice), which encourages your new contact to say as little or as much as they’d like.

As you hear your new contact talk about what they love about their work, listen for what parts of their job overlap with what you want to do – this might be an opportunity to collaborate, or an area where they can share helpful insights with you. If you don’t see any overlap, hearing what your new contact is interested in and passionate about will at least help you deepen the social connection.

4 – What do you know now that you wished you knew when you started?

This question encourages reflection about one’s career, and answers can go in a lot of different directions, giving you more information and time to figure out how to tailor the conversation and subsequent follow up. Some people answer it by talking about key skills and expertise that have served them well. If their career overlaps your professional objectives, this gives you insight into what you might prioritize. Even if your new contact is in a very different line of work, there may be some general pearls of wisdom that could apply to you, or at least you’ll glean some insights for your accounting friends!

Some people talk about critical choices along the way – why they decided to join EY, stay in accounting or pivot to accounting (if they initially did something else). You might learn something about the industry at large or different companies in that market. Even if your new contact is in a different line of work than you, hearing about different companies and industries is helpful to your overall understanding of the job market.

Thoughtful questions focus on learning about the other person

The best networking is tailored, and genuine networking relationships are built over time (here’s a checklist to see if your networking is paying off). Therefore, the most thoughtful questions when meeting people are the ones that enable you to learn enough about your new contacts so you can tailor your follow-up in a meaningful way (e.g., make relevant recommendations, share helpful information). Knowing more about your new contacts also allows you to prioritize which ones you’ll focus on for your job search right now v. general relationships you can nurture over time for your overall professional network.

#JobSearch : 5 Ways Job Seekers Can Keep In Touch With Employers Who Rejected Them. The Holidays are The Best Time to Network. Great REad!

I’m going to a networking event hosted by an organization I applied to about 1.5 months ago (haven’t heard back, assuming I didn’t get the job, ha!) . Do I mention this if / when I meet people who work with the organization? Not sure the best way to navigate this. I want to ensure that they know I’m open to other opportunities and am overall interested in staying in touch. – Christina

Kudos to Christina for doing several things right that other job seekers overlook. First of all, she’s networking, which is the number one source for timely job openings (a lot of job postings aren’t current or accurate). Secondly, she’s thinking about how she’ll talk about herself as she meets people – we’re all multifaceted, so be selective about what you talk about, to whom and when. Finally, she’s thinking even more specifically about how she’ll talk about her job search – people aren’t mind-readers, and you need to be explicit about the help you need.

The holidays are a great time to network, and chances are you’ll be in Christina’s situation — running into people you previously connected with on your job search. Some people may not be responsive or have even rejected you outright for a job. Here are five best practices for following up specifically with target employers in your job search pipeline:

1 – Continue to follow-up regularly

Attend that networking event. Follow and comment on social media. Stay connected to individuals you met during your research or even from meetings that didn’t lead anywhere specific. A rejection for one opportunity doesn’t necessarily mean rejection for the next opportunity (see three reasons why a well-qualified candidate still doesn’t get the job). The best follow-up keeps you top of mind for the next opportunity (and the next) because circumstances change, and the better fit for you might be another role, another time or another market environment.

2 — Don’t make every point of follow-up about any one job

While Christina did lots of things right, one adjustment to make is to stop assuming she didn’t get the job because she didn’t hear back. No decision is not enough information to presume a No or a Yes. If she’s still interested in that job from six weeks ago, she should continue to try and get an interview for it – until she hears that No.

There are people you meet at an event that are clearly connected to the very job you want, it makes sense to mention your interest in it since it’s a prime opportunity to get more accurate and updated information about the job. A relevant person may be able to direct you – “oh, that job was filled weeks ago but we haven’t announced it yet”. Or, “we decided not to hire for the one, but there’s another similar one you should look at.” Or, “gee, you would be perfect for that one – let me make sure I get your stuff in front of the right person.”

Don’t harbor any assumptions – positive or negative – about the decision on your current application. Continue to network, and discuss a particular job with people connected to it. Otherwise, keep the conversation open-ended – about your job search overall if people already know you’re looking, or just about getting to know each other as people if you’re meeting for the first time.

3 – Mix up your topics

There is so much to talk about that isn’t about your job search, but still moves the conversation forward. Send holiday wishes – this deepens your rapport. Send congratulations if the person or their company has announced a recent win – this shows you’re thinking about them and that you’re staying on top of the news in your field. Send a status update about something, other thank your job search, that you’re working on – this shows that you’re staying busy and keeping your skills and expertise up-to-date without making the other person feel like you’re only reaching out because you need something.

At a networking event, get the other person talking. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about the company and what the company needs. You may uncover enough information that you can pitch a job for yourself, or at least, know exactly what skills and expertise you have that meet an urgent need for that employer.

4 – Mix up your media

Showing up at a networking event is just one way to keep in touch. You can also email, post on social (yes, you can build genuine relationships on LinkedIn) or mail a holiday card. If you know someone well and they like to text, then text. People have different habits when it comes to keeping in touch, and what’s important for follow-up that works is that you meet other people’s preferences and not your own. You might prefer 1:1 meetings, but other people just don’t have time. You might not be active on LinkedIn, but if you’re trying to develop a relationship with someone who is active on that platform, it could be more expedient to take your communication there – at least with that person.

5 – Aim for clarity – which could be a decision, or something else

In all of your follow-up, look for signs that the relationship is going somewhere or that the person wants you to back off. For an open job, this means getting a decision about whether the role is still available, whether your status has been decided, or if not, what is the next step and timetable you can expect. Until you get that clarity, keep working on that job and other relationships within that company. Keep trying for new leads all this time, since you can’t control when you’ll get that clarity.

If there isn’t a specific job that’s open, look for the quantity and quality of response from people you’re networking with. Do the responses take a long time and are cursory with little or no opening to continue the back and forth? That could be a sign that the person would rather back off – or, it could be a busy time overall and not you specifically. Slow down the communication (every other month instead of week, for example). Focus on other contacts until you’re clearer about the viability of this one.

Employers should stay in your network as long as you are still interested in them

Whether or not you get a job there is not 100% in your control, but the pace, quality and consistency of your follow-up is. Put in the work to stay top of mind and to develop a relationship built on something more than any one job. This keeps you in consideration when potential opportunities do arise, while also fostering a genuine connection that’s sustainable rather than transactional.

Depending on where you are in your career, here are some aspects to networking for you to consider:

  • Start early. If you’re fresh out of college or if you’re trying to get a foothold in a new career move, the sooner you start making those connections, the better off you’ll be. Reach out to classmates or find student chapters of professional societies. It is easier to maintain relationships that you already have than to start out cold. If you’re freelancing, cultivate more connections whenever you possibly can, from fellow freelancers or from your clients themselves.
  • Choose wisely. Unfortunately, a down job market also brings the scammers and fly-by-nighters out of the woodwork. They know that there are job seekers (and sometimes clients) who are bordering on desperation. They might be out to take advantage of you, or they might be looking for a pawn to help advance a cause of some sort. You don’t want that hung on you, so tread carefully and make good decisions.
  • Cast a net wide. Don’t limit yourself to just your field or to people with tastes, interests, or skills to your own. It’s easy to make this mistake and to just have associates that are in your “comfort zone.” What happens if your industry takes a nose dive? You will need to consider pivoting to something new, and those connections in other fields can be an asset. Remember that the wider your network of people, the more resources you can have to fall back on if things go sour.
  • Quid pro quo. Networking is a two-way street. If there’s anything you can do for your associates in return, whether it’s job referrals, professional references, or anything else, don’t hesitate to do it. It will pay off for you in the long run.
  • Go online. Make a plan to utilize your social media to network with potential connections every day. LinkedIn is the #1 professional networking site, so ensure your profile is up-to-date and set for recruiters to find you.

With record numbers of job seekers vying for every open position and hiring managers overwhelmed with resumes, this is a challenging time to be in a job search. That’s why networking is even more important today than ever before.

Most of my clients cringe at the word “networking.” Networking can feel like an impersonal exchange of pleasantries at best, and an uncomfortable ask for a favor at worst.

But, remember:

1) Most people love talking about themselves. Never feel guilty asking for a conversation. Your job will be to ask a lot of thoughtful questions and listen. The receiver will most likely be pleased to oblige.

2) In general, people enjoy providing value to others. People like helping others. You’re not going to force someone to jump on a Zoom call with you unless they want to.

Even knowing these two powerful facts, having a step-by-step process for the actual networking conversation itself can be helpful.

Here’s your go-to 5-step script for your next networking conversation:

1. If you asked for the conversation, take control up front.

Uncertainty at the beginning of a call can be awkward. After an initial exchange of pleasantries simply say: “Thank you so much for jumping on the phone to talk with me today. Perhaps first it would be helpful to give you a brief background on myself and the context for this call. Then, I’d love to hear a little bit more about your background and how you ended up at [X company] and then, time permitting, it would be great to ask you some questions at the end. How does that sound?”

2. Have your spiel down pat, and no more than 45 seconds.

Write down and prepare your 30-45 second narrative (or as I like to call it, your “spiel.”) Do not leave this part of the conversation up to chance, because you may talk for longer than is appropriate. Your spiel should briefly explain your professional past, (where you’ve been) current state (where you are), and future goals (where you want to go).

3. Ask specific and thoughtful questions you can’t get from the website.

Don’t ask basic questions that you simply could have googled. Make your questions personal. Going Places, a female-founded company that helps individuals navigate the job search says to use the following question structure, time permitting:

  • Two questions about the person. (How was your experience in sales different from [Company X] to [Company Y]? I saw you published a book 5 years ago. That’s awesome. How is that doing? What was the process like getting it published?)
  • One question about the company. (What’s the company culture like on your team?)
  • One question about the industry. (I saw that you’re blocking political ads on the platform. Was that something everyone feels positively about internally?)

4. Make an ask… tactfully.

At the end of the call, a person may ask what they can do for you. Even if the person doesn’t ask that question, though, don’t let that deter you. According to Going Places, “Ask your ask! And make sure it does not require extra work for [the person you’re asking]. Whether it’s a referral or advice, you need to understand the follow-up steps required and plan ahead of time. (Example: if you want an e-introduction to another person within the company, draft the email for them! Then, the most the person should have to do is forward that email.)” I tell my clients: Make your ask SEA: Simple and Easily Accomplished.

5. You should walk away with 3 nouns: people, places, or things.

Your goal should be to leave the conversation with three takeaways. Keep in mind, these can be resources like books or articles to read, other individuals to speak to, other companies to look into, or a new phrase, idea or technology you hadn’t heard of. I’m a believer in the “tree-branch effect” of networking: if each conversation leads you to three nouns, and then each of those nouns leads you to three more nouns, you’ll amplify your effect.

Follow these 5 steps and you’ll be a networking call pro in no time. And, don’t forget your thank you note!

Networking is so helpful to a job search that one might assume it’s the right next step in all situations. However, this is not the case, and trying to get a networking meeting rather than taking another, more appropriate action can even hurt your job search. Every impression counts. The questions you ask, the help you ask for and the information that you don’t know all make an impression during your networking.

Here are five job search situations where networking is not the best next step – and what to do instead:

1 – You have no idea what you want

Sure, it’s helpful to talk to things out with other people, and that’s true for getting ideas for your career. However, when you approach people as someone who doesn’t know what they want, you appear undecided (commitment issue?), unsure (confidence problem?) or unprepared (laziness?). The other person might be willing to brainstorm with you, but they also might feel like it’s too big a question to solve. How would they know what you should do with your life?

Don’t network about anything too general. Have at least some idea of potential career moves, and use the meeting to test these specific ideas. Do research in advance about what your target careers would entail, and tailor your questions to how the other person can specifically help you. For example, if you are looking to switch industries and have narrowed down your possibilities to media and tech, reserve the media questions for your media connections and the tech questions for your tech connections. This way, you appear focused, prepared and respectful of their time.

2 – The questions you have can be answered by basic research

I once heard from a graduate of my alma mater, who wanted to talk about her career change into management consulting. At the time, I had just pivoted my own career from management consulting to executive search but with a management consulting focus, so it made sense that this person would want to speak with me. Since we had so much in common – same school, both career changers – I readily agreed. (Pointing out common affinities is an effective way to land networking meetings!) However, her opening question for me was to name the top companies in the field.

Don’t ask questions that can be answered by basic research. Do that research in advance, and use the networking meetings to verify the information or get nuanced information. For example, had this alum let me know what she was seeing as the top competitors mentioned in the field and then asked if I agreed or asked if I would name different companies based on her interest in a specific sub-area, then I would have seen her as someone who had put in some work and was going the extra step. Instead, I felt used that she wanted to shortcut her research and just ask for the answers.

3 – The contact who offers to refer you to HR doesn’t know you well

It is always helpful to get someone inside the company to pass on your resume for a job opening. However, it is less helpful when the person referring you doesn’t know you at all. Therefore, if you have a networking meeting with someone at a company where there is an open job that you want, but you do not know that person well, I would not ask that person to submit your resume. If they offer to submit it, I would thank them profusely and I would possibly let them submit it later, but first I would ask for information (here are eight better things to ask for than a generic introduction to HR).

When a networking contact doesn’t know you well, any referral they make on your behalf isn’t going to be that strong. At best, it will be something like, “I have never worked with this person but we have a mutual friend who knows great people so this person must be great.” Maybe, but now the recruiter or hiring manager has to believe that you’re such a good judge of people that you have vetted that your friend can vet their friends – that’s a long chain of trust. It may make the company give you a second glance, but if the hiring team has any doubts, your tenuous networking contact won’t be able to advocate for you and probably won’t want to put themselves on the line. They may even have offered to submit your resume just to cut the meeting short and will be a lukewarm advocate at best.

4 – You reach a recruiter who doesn’t hire for what you want

Yes, recruiters are great networking connections to have and not just for your immediate job search. Experienced recruiters have knowledge of their market, a broad perspective on career issues and a wide network. Recruiters are definitely on the top 10 list of people you should have in your network.

However, many recruiters specialize in a specific industry or function, and if you are outside that area, then a recruiter’s knowledge, feedback and network will be less relevant to you. If a recruiter is internal to a company, they will be most relevant about jobs specific to that company, and your networking efforts should be focused on multiple companies. Too many job seekers make reaching recruiters, any recruiters, a top priority. It’s best to focus on hiring managers, who are the ultimate decision-makers, or recruiters in your target area. To reach these people, you need to have a background that clearly shows your value to them. If your resume, LinkedIn profile and responses to commonly asked questions don’t yet make that value crystal-clear, focus on these supporting tools first before you squander a networking meeting.

5 – You reach a recruiter who hires for what you want – but you’re a career changer

If you are a career changer, recruiters are not helpful, even if they specialize in the area you want. I say that as a recruiter and a multiple-time career changer – I would never hire myself! A recruiter’s job is to filter people out, not make an exception, and a career changer is always the exception. If you are a career changer and you have existing recruiter relationships from your former career, these recruiters may be even less helpful if they try to convince you to stay where you are (after all, that’s where they can place you).

It’s always more effective to network with a hiring manager than with a recruiter, and for career changers this is even more important because it’s the hiring manager that can make an exception. However, networking whether it’s with the recruiter or the hiring manager is not the best move for a career changer, until you have something to talk about in your new career. If you don’t have knowledge of your new area and some demonstrated results (it can be from volunteer work or consulting, not just another job), then talking to people, especially influential people like hiring managers and recruiters, is premature.


Networking is helpful only when you are prepared

I certainly don’t want to discourage networking as part of your job search. People hire people, so it is critical that you connect with people and not just submit your resume to faceless job postings. That said, you want to make the right impression when you network. You want to appear focused, knowledgeable and prepared. The person you’re networking with can refer you to be hired, if not hire you outright. You don’t want to squander that opportunity for your job search.

With the arrival of Covid-19, mid-day coffees, after-work drinks, working lunches and dinners have all been suspended. Our networking options have moved almost entirely online, which makes establishing and maintaining a personal connection all the more challenging.

So how should you go about networking in this increasingly uncertain and stressful time? Below are a tips on how to network virtually:

Determine Your Goals

Are you trying to strengthen your relationships with your colleagues? Make more connections in your field? Find certain opportunities, perhaps getting a board position or more speaking engagements? Consider what you want from your professional relationships and connections, and think about who you know who could advise you on it or put you in touch with someone who can. But give your networking intention, otherwise you’re aimlessly contacting people with no goal in mind, which is a waste of your time and your desired contact’s time.

Start With People You Know

Think about your colleagues, friends, family, and who can help you achieve your goal or put you in touch with someone who can. Networking doesn’t have to mean going to contrived events with name tags and strangers, it can simply mean making friends in your field and maintaining those friendships, and keeping a good relationship with family members in your field. It’s always smart to consult your alma mater’s career center and see if there are any active alumni in your field who would be happy to speak with you. These are all resources that are waiting to be tapped, use them.

Regularly Schedule Zoom Meetings

Talking to people face to face always helps enhance the connection. Check-in with friends, family and colleagues the way you would in person, but over Zoom. It is not the same, but everyone is navigating Covid-19 the best they can, and keeping up a social routine is important, so make sure and maintain a robust, virtual social calendar in spite of occasional awkwardness and tension of getting accustomed to a new routine.

Engage People On Social Media

Keep up a modest to active presence on social media: post interesting articles, a funny video now and then, keep in casual online contact with friends and family on the social media platform of your choice. It is an easy and enjoyable vehicle to get to know people, to get in touch with people, send private messages to ask how people are doing, send them articles you believe they would find interesting. It is an easy, organic way to keep in touch and strike up spontaneous conversations.

Update Your LinkedIn

Updating your LinkedIn notifies everyone in your network you’ve updated your profile, inviting current connections and potential employers to read your updates, including what you’re searching for professionally. So make sure to clearly articulate what you are looking for and don’t wait for others to reach out, scroll through your online contacts there to see if there is someone you should get in touch with that you didn’t think of immediately.

Many of us find that we have extra time on our hands with the pandemic sweeping across our globe. Now is a great time to be networking with your current connections, and making new contacts.

You want to have your network in place when your job situation returns to “normal.” It doesn’t matter if you are an executive who is considered an expert in their field or just getting started; you always need to be working on your c-level personal branding.

There are many misconceptions about networking, including the common belief that it’s not necessary to find a job. Here’s what you need to know about networking to clear up those misconceptions. 

Networking Isn’t Asking For Favors

It’s natural for people to not like asking for favors, so they choose to skip networking events. However, your mindset going into a networking event should not be to ask for favors. Rather, it should be to generate engaging conversations with like-minded professionals and see where the relationship goes from there. Asking someone for a favor is not recommended since it could negatively impact your c-level personal branding. 

Networking Isn’t Always Formal

If you’re intimidated by the thought of going to a formal event with hundreds of other people, then start out smaller. Make connections through your LinkedIn profile and if you make good conversations with someone, ask if they would like to grab coffee or lunch (once you can be closer than 6’ away!). Networking doesn’t have to be defined as attending a formal event. Making conversations with people informally is still considered networking and can even be more valuable since you have a one-on-one connection with the person.

Odds are, you already know how important networking is. But despite the endless benefits of networking, many people still dread the experience.

Often, this is because they simply don’t know what to say. After all, approaching a stranger you know nothing about can be pretty intimidating — what in the world do you talk about?

Well, the next time you find yourself wondering this at an industry mixer, don’t fret. We talked to a handful of career experts to get their recommendations on great questions to ask while networking. Use any of these questions for a quick and painless conversation starter.

1. “What brings you here?”

This light-touch question is a great way to begin a conversation, explains Michelle Tillis Lederman, author of The Connector’s Advantage: 7 Mindsets to Grow Your Influence and Impact.

“This question shows you are interested in the other person and are not just trying to figure out how they can help you. Their response will give you a sense of what they are working on and what is on the front of their mind. That will lead you to extend the conversation and figure out how you can add value to them,” Tillis Lederman explains. “They will also likely ask you the question in return and give you an opening to share what your current objectives are.”

2. “How did you get involved in the industry/company?”

Once you know a little bit more about somebody’s professional background, ask them how they got their start. It can provide valuable takeaways for you, as well as make you seem more likable.

“Finding out more about their journey leading up to their current role can offer an excellent insight into what you might need to do in order to work in that industry, role or company,” says Lars Herrem, Group Executive Director at recruiting agency Nigel Wright Group. “Demonstrating your interest and enthusiasm is key to creating a lasting impression and making yourself memorable, something which will prove extremely beneficial if you end up reaching out to this person in the future.”

3. “Since you work in the industry, how do you feel about X?”

Asking about a specific, timely event in the industry — whether it’s proposed legislation, a merger, a recent news story, etc. — is a great way to show the person you’re speaking with that you are knowledgeable and thoughtful, both of which are key to being memorable, says career coach Eli Howayeck of Crafted Career Concepts.

“First impressions matter. The best thing you can do, besides being a nice person, is to demonstrate how you think and what you know about the marketplace,” Howayeck explains. “This helps direct the conversation and informs your conversation partner that you likely know what you’re talking about or, at a minimum, pay attention to what is going on in the world and [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][are] not only focused on yourself and your advancement.”

4. “How would someone get their foot in the door in your company/industry?”

The ultimate objective of networking is often to get a new job, but coming out and asking somebody you just met to help you get one can be pretty off-putting. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t approach the topic at all — you just have to do so delicately.

This question “is a subtle way to ask about opportunities without coming right out and saying, ‘Do you know if they are hiring?’” says career coach Madelyn Mackie. “If you are lucky, they will ask you if you are interested and then provide you with a business card to follow-up with them after the event.”

Even if they aren’t able to help you out directly, though, you will likely gain some valuable insight that will help you in your job search process.

5. “Based on your journey, what do you wish someone would have told you earlier in your career?”

This is a great question to ask if you’re speaking with somebody who is more senior than you are. It allows them to impart the knowledge they’ve acquired over the years with you, as well as appeals to their ego.

“People are way more comfortable sharing their wisdom than they are sharing their contacts, and both can be very valuable,” Howayeck says. “Seeking to learn from others honors them and shows that you’re invested in growth. It also shows deference and can endear the person to you and deepen the connection.”

6. “How do you spend your time outside of work?”

At its heart, networking is all about forming connections with others, so don’t be afraid to veer towards lighthearted chitchat. Questions like this one help people open up, and make it clear that you don’t expect the interaction to be purely transactional.

“This kind of question lowers the stakes and also gives the other person a chance to discuss what they’re passionate about,” Howayeck explains. “It also shows that you are actually interested in them as a person, and not just what they do and how it could help you.”

Who knows? You may even bond over a shared interest or activity!

7. “What’s the best way for me to get in touch/follow up with you?”

Ask this question, and you’re guaranteed to avoid one of the biggest mistakes that novice networkers make, according to career coach Nikki Bruno: “Beginning networkers often make the mistake of giving away a stack of business cards but gathering none. The only way to ensure that you’ll be able to follow up with new contacts is to get their information; it keeps you in the driver’s seat.”

“Note that this question is intentionally different from ‘May I have your card?’” Bruno adds. “Asking to stay in touch or to follow someone shows that you view him/her as a human being, not as a mere contact.”
