It just takes a bit of additional planning and preparation.

First, remember that it’s never too late to grow your network. You don’t need to be one of those people with an enormous list of contacts. It’s more beneficial to focus on the quality of your network than the number of people in your virtual Rolodex.

To get a job without contacts, approach your search strategically. That means leaning into your skills, qualifications and personality. Whether you are a recent graduate or a seasoned professional, these practical approaches will help you get noticed and hired at a top company.

Focus Your Job Search

Your job search needs to be well thought out and intentional. So, the initial step is to have a specific idea of the role you’re looking for. If you just graduated from college or are thinking of changing careers, building your network from scratch might be necessary. To begin, start with who you know, including family and friends. A great way to meet new people is to join your local college alum group. Some additional places to connect with individuals to add to your network include:

You will set yourself apart in a crowded professional marketplace by positioning yourself as an expert.

Leverage Professional Services

When you’re struggling to get a job without contacts, it helps to seek professional help. A career coach specializes in helping you on your journey of self-discovery. Many people wait to hire a coach until they are middle managers. But having a coach early on can help accelerate your career. To find someone reputable, coaching associations like the International Coaching Federation or International Association of Coaching are great resources. You also might explore a virtual coaching platform like BetterUp or CoachUp. In the end, take your time to find the right person. Unlike a traditional bullet-pointed resume, a storytelling or narrative resume communicates your experience and qualifications more effectively. The format is creative and engaging because it uses paragraphs and descriptive language to make your value to an employer come to life. A key advantage to a narrative resume is that it helps the recruiter better understand your competencies while illustrating why you would make an ideal candidate. Not only is the format more memorable, but it also does a better job of communicating your career history and achievements cohesively.

Don’t let a lack of connections discourage you from applying for a position. While it can be intimidating, it’s not impossible to get a job without contacts. Sometimes, taking the initiative, knowing your worth and using a focused strategy is enough.

The latest monthly jobs report reveals that job seekers in the United States are encountering significant challenges. Those currently employed may be understandably anxious about job security, especially as major companies like Intel have announced substantial layoffs affecting thousands of workers.

The U.S. jobs report revealed a notable decline in hiring during July, with the economy only adding a disappointing 114,000 jobs last month. There was a sizable drop from the average of 215,000 jobs added monthly over the past year, and the report fell short of economists’ expectations of around 175,000 new positions.

The unemployment rate rose to 4.3%, reaching its highest point since October 2021. In response, the stock market plunged, creating a concern over a potential upcoming recession.

The big picture for Americans reflects uncertainty. The unknown surrounding the outcome of the upcoming presidential election can cause consumers to delay spending and businesses to postpone investments and hiring until the political landscape becomes clearer, as well as macro geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine. Additionally, inflation and the high cost of living are anchors on American families.

As the job market continues to evolve, the ability to adapt and acquire new skills has become essential for career success. By embracing networking, upskilling and reskilling, individuals can enhance their employability, navigate uncertainties with confidence and position themselves as valuable assets in an increasingly competitive job market.

Cultivating A Supportive Network

Networking remains one of the best ways to find a new job. The key is to find internal employees at your target companies and have them share your résumé along with a strong recommendation.

Focus on personal branding and maintaining a strong online presence. Personal branding helps workers stand out in a crowded job market. It builds credibility in your field and helps establish trust with your audience. A strong personal brand can also open doors to new opportunities.

Regularly update your LinkedIn profile, engage in industry-related discussions on professional platforms and create content that showcases your expertise in your field.

Stay positive and persistent throughout the process. Job hunting during difficult times can be challenging and discouraging, but maintaining a positive attitude and consistently putting in effort can ultimately lead to success in finding new employment.

In 2021 I wrote here about the frustrations job seekers were having securing a position. A FlexJobs Summer 2021 Unemployment Survey polled more than 1,800 women and men out of work to obtain information about their unemployment experiences. The survey found that 69% of those currently unemployed were out of work as a direct result of the pandemic, and 42% had been out of work for a year. With millions of job openings and millions unemployed, job seekers were struggling to find work, and companies struggled to fill positions.

Job seekers (48%) said they were frustrated in their job search because they couldn’t find the right jobs to apply for, causing many of them to rethink the parameters of their searches. Many (47%) started actively looking outside their fields to find employment. Although 69% said they were actively and consistently searching for a job, 34% reported that they hadn’t secured any job interviews. The vast majority (85%) were willing to take a pay cut in order to secure a job, and 40% said they had applied to jobs for which they were overqualified.

Despite their earnestness in searching, the 2021 job seekers said they were frustrated by obstacles that were in their way. The three top obstacles were jobs were too low paying (46%), employers are unresponsive (42%) and job seekers couldn’t find jobs in their preferred profession.

What Job Hunters Are Searching For In 2024

Now, after three years since the 2021 survey, an Aerotek study finds the average 2024 job searcher still enduring longer job hunts in an uncertain economy. The findings also reveal that job hunters are feeling vulnerable, and job stability is at the top of their priority list along with higher pay and job engagement.

According to Quinn Heimann, director of strategic sales at Aerotek, “Job seekers are without a doubt feeling the impact of an evolving labor market. In addition to reporting that they are experiencing a slower hiring process, job seekers reported the expectation is that they will need to apply to more jobs than they expected to in our Fall 2023 survey.” Heimann underscores the fact that in a time of economic uncertainty, job seekers are prioritizing job pay and security because they are feeling vulnerable.

She adds that they are de-prioritizing other motivators when deciding to accept a new job like the potential for career advancement. “Still, nearly three of four job seekers express they want to know employers support their employees and offer a place where they will be able to establish social connections and engage in teamwork activities.”

The survey collected feedback from 1,433 job seekers across various industries, providing valuable insights into their evolving priorities and workforce challenges. Three items are at the top of their priority list:

  1. Job stability. Job seekers are becoming more motivated by job security as the prolonged period of economic uncertainty continues. When asked to choose from a list of eight motivators, the number of workers reporting job security as the most important increased by five percent compared to spring 2023, and the number of workers reporting pay as most important increased by four percent.
  2. Higher pay. A staggering 81.2% of respondents feel the same or worse about their financial situation compared to this time in 2023. Of 486 respondents who received a raise in the last year, 71% still feel the same or worse about their financial situation.
  3. Job engagement. Workers are more likely to stay if they can create social connections in the workplace. Aerotek’s survey findings reflect that engagement is a priority for job seekers, as 73.2% report that engaging with coworkers improves their feelings about a job, and 69.2% said they are more likely to stay at a job that promotes social connections.

 

“It’s never been more important for employers to communicate how they support employees and foster collaboration in their work environment.” Heimann emphasizes. “These survey results also emphasize the need for employers to take steps to button up their hiring process in order to ensure they don’t lose candidates who may be feeling added pressure to hold down a job in a time of uncertainty.”

Coping With The Stress Of Job Search Uncertainty

The inevitable uncertainty of a job search instantly arouses the fight-or-flight reaction. And there is no greater stress than uncertainty brought on by worries that come with dead-end job searches, shrinking financial resources and a questionable job loss. The instability of questions like how will you find a decent-paying job, pay the mortgage, get the kids through college or retire can make you sick.

Scientists have found that job uncertainty takes a greater toll on your health than actually losing the job. And employees living with job uncertainty have worse overall health and more depression than employees who actually lose their jobs. Statistics also show you’re more likely to maintain the stamina to continue taking risks after a car crash than after a series of psychological setbacks.

Studies show that job loss can lower your immune system, making you more vulnerable to viruses. Workers living with unemployment are five times more likely to catch colds than workers without job threats. Job uncertainty makes you more vulnerable to diseases and worsens existing chronic ailments such as heart disease, diabetes or depression.

The best defense against job search uncertainty is to manage the stress so your body doesn’t bear the burden. Keep yourself fit by getting the sleep, exercise and balanced diet your body needs. Avoid junk food, excessive alcohol and nicotine. These unhealthy behaviors seem to reduce anxiety in the short term, but they actually raise stress levels over the long haul.

Try to refrain from worry that doesn’t prepare you for uncertainty. The uncertainty of a job search is a given that you can count on. Your ability to accept job search uncertainty has a more positive effect on your health than worry or rumination. It reduces stress and brings peace of mind. It allows you to manage what you can and let the rest go.

Simply taking charge of what you can control empowers you so you don’t feel like a victim of circumstance. Have a back up plan just in case. Go to job fairs, talk with employers and find out what they’re looking for. Find websites of companies that are hiring. Add this search routine to your weekly schedule and be disciplined about it. The pool is large and you want to stand out, so improve your interviewing skills. Make sure your resume is neat and grammatically correct and you have dotted all of your i’s and crossed all of your t’s.

Cultivating “uncertainty tolerance” helps you cope with any unknown outcome. I recognize accepting, instead of resisting, the uncertainty of a job hunt is a tall order, but it’s counter intuitive. When you turn unknowns into adventure—instead of problems to solve—it amps up your uncertainty tolerance, takes the edge off the waiting period and brings balance to your ability to anticipate positive and negative outcomes more evenly. Flipping your perspective, welcomes possibilities and solutions—a shift that makes you feel empowered and less victimized by uncertainty.

The U.S. Economy added 303,000 jobs in March, marking the 39th month in a row of job growth. Concurrently unemployment has held below 4% for 26 months straight – the longest stretch of continuous low unemployment in 50 years. In contrast LinkedIn’s data reveals unusually low attrition (folks changing jobs) over the last 24 months, with the assumption being that economic uncertainty tied to high-profile corporate layoffs artificially dampened the talent market.

All of which to say it is likely we’re about to see a lot more liquidity in the talent market as the pent-up demand catalyzes a chain-reaction of job changes. If you are considering reentering the job market for the first time in a few years, it can be helpful to have a strategy to help navigate the post-pandemic new-normal:

Crafting A Post-Pandemic Job Search Strategy

Internal recruiting teams have three main channels to fill open jobs, so to maximize your chances of getting hired you want to show up in each channel in the most optimal way. It can be helpful to think about LinkedIn as your job search hub, where your career content (your resume and any thought leadership) lives. Wherever possible you should try to get referrals from existing employees at the companies you are applying to, as this maximizes the chances of your application getting seen.

Additionally, even though it is the job search task with the lowest return, you are still going to have to apply for jobs. The significant strides forward in consumer-facing technology have resulted in a substantial increase in the overall number of job applications submitted, creating a signal-to-noise issue for recruiting teams to solve. Because inbound job applications are the most over-subscribed of the three channels, it is helpful to take a two-pronged approach. Setting alerts on LinkedIn and Indeed (the two highest trafficked job boards) to serve you all new jobs posted in the last 24 hours helps you be amongst the earliest applicants, but it is also helpful to look further afield. Although you will find the majority of jobs posted across LinkedIn and Indeed, you won’t find all jobs – here are some great alternatives:

1. Venture Capital / Private Equity Talent Networks

If your industry sees a lot of venture capital or private equity activity, then it is almost certainly a good investment of time to research the two or three firms with the most activity, and to register with their in-house talent networks. Some firms run invite-only job boards, some have in-house talent teams that act as intermediary search firms for their portfolio companies. Some actively publish lists of open jobs to their mailing lists.

2. State Government Websites

It can be easy to forget that local governments operate like giant corporations, and as such hire into an incredibly broad range of disciplines, from human resources to finance to legal. Because local governments are often resource constrained, they typically don’t have large budgets for external media, which often means the only place you will see those jobs is on their own websites.

3. Alumni Networks

Historically the preserve of colleges and institutions, increasingly corporations are also investing in curating their alumni networks, because former employees can be a rich source of new business, and easy “boomerang” hires. Wherever you have graduated from it can be a worthwhile investment of time to seek out the alumni network and register with it. The alumni networks of colleges often incorporate a jobs portal, and even if you feel ambivalent about returning to a former employer you might still find opportunities posted by other alums at their new places of work. Either way they tend to be rich seams of opportunity that are often overlooked.

4. Industry Publication Job Boards

Although industry or trade publications can feel a bit anachronistic, many of these legacy media titles have been able to survive in (albeit significantly reduced) digital formats. Whichever industry you’re in, there’s almost certainly a surviving title or two, and many of them have an associated jobs portal. Even if you let your subscription lapse long ago, it can be worth revisiting the jobs portal as many niche businesses still choose to advertise their open roles there before paying the (usually higher) price for national mainstream media properties.

5. Direct Boolean Searches

Whether it’s a major national job board like Indeed, or a niche industry-specific job portal, there is always a cost associated with publishing job vacancies. For smaller organizations that means they often have to make a choice on which roles get pushed externally versus those that are only published on the corporate-owned career site. Becoming familiar with Boolean search terms can help you quickly uncover these less-publicized jobs, rather than having to individually visit the career sites of companies that you are targeting.

There is no question that the post-pandemic talent market is tricky to navigate. Understanding both how recruiters work, and the resource constraints that employers face, can help you refine your strategy and optimize your job search.

Networking events are the watering holes of the professional world. They’re where connections are made, opportunities are discovered, careers are shaped, and free snacks are had. However, just like any social gathering, there are unspoken rules–faux pas that can turn a potential career elevator into a free-fall.

To avoid stepping on it, consider the following six tips.

1. Don’t Oversell Yourself

No offense, but you’re not that great. And even if you are, people don’t want to hear it at a networking event. Resist the urge to transform into a walking, talking infomercial. Yes, you’re amazing at what you do, but relentless self-promotion can be off-putting. It’s like being at a party where someone keeps shoving their homemade guacamole in your face–it might be the best guac in the world, but let people come to it naturally. There is, after all, a lot of guacamole in the world. Instead, focus on building genuine connections. Networking is a marathon, not a sprint.

2. Avoid the ‘Me, Myself, and I’ Monologue

If your conversation sounds more like a monologue, you’re doing it wrong. Domineering the conversation like a talk show host gone rogue means you’re probably not listening. Remember, it’s a dialogue, not a soliloquy. Be curious about others. Ask questions, show interest in their work, and let the conversation flow naturally. Think of it as a tennis match, not a solo chess game.

3. Don’t Be a Business Card Ninja

Handing out business cards like you’re dealing a deck of cards in Vegas is a no-no. Everyone’s online, so a physical card is…kinda humiliating. The goal is to create meaningful connections, not hit a quota. Quality trumps quantity. It’s better to leave the event with a few meaningful contacts than a pocket full of cards from people whose faces you can’t recall. Distribute your business card when a genuine connection is made, not as an opening move.

4. Steer Clear of Controversial Topics

This one should be obvious, but it’s astonishing how often it’s overlooked. Avoid controversial topics like politics, religion, or personal gossip (unless it’s, like, really good gossip, about someone you know they hate). You’re not on a debate team, and this isn’t the time to showcase your strong opinions on the latest political drama. Stick to safe, neutral topics. Think of it as a dinner with the in-laws–play it safe (and avoid it if possible).

5. Don’t Underestimate Anyone

Treating someone as unimportant because they don’t seem like a high-flyer is a huge mistake. Also, it’s rude. Everyone has something to offer, and you never know who might be instrumental in your career down the line. Networking karma is real. Treat everyone with respect and interest – the intern today could be the CEO tomorrow. Remember, it’s a small world, and you’re likely to run into the same people again.

6. Avoid Being Glued To Your Phone

In a world where our phones are like extensions of our bodies, this is tough. But being glued to your screen at a networking event is a no-no. Be present. Engage with the people around you. Your emails can wait – the opportunity to make a meaningful connection might not.

Networking events are unique platforms for professional growth and opportunity. However, they require a certain finesse. Remember, the goal of networking is to build relationships, not just to add names to your contact list. So, the next time you find yourself at one of these events, be genuine, be respectful, and most importantly, be yourself. After all, the best connections are the ones that are authentically made.

#JobSearch : How To Network. for People Who Don’t Like The Idea Of Networking. As an Introvert, Here are a Few Approaches that Work.

I’ve never been comfortable with the notion of networking, at least in the conventional sense of the word. I’m an introvert, and I haven’t been able to figure out the art of moving in and out of conversations during, say, the cocktail hour at a conference. I’d much rather have a long discussion with one person, and so my default strategy is to spot another introvert and approach them.

But it is important to build a network, of course. Your career path, after all, is going to be determined as much by the people you know as the work you do, especially if you’re ambitious. “When you talk about getting to the most senior levels, it’s less about the work and more about the network and your impact and how you market and brand what you’re working on,” said Mary Elizabeth Porray, global deputy vice chair for client technology for EY, the consulting firm. “So make sure that you’re focusing 50 percent on what you know and 50 percent on who you know.”

If you’re a fellow introvert, or the idea of networking feels transactional, then here are a few approaches that have worked well for me over the years.

60-Second Research

In my line of work, I meet a lot of new people, mostly on video calls. I always make it a habit of taking a minute before the call starts to check the person’s LinkedIn profile and social-media feeds. I’m looking for things we have in common. Maybe they spent a few years working in journalism early in their career. Or perhaps they’re from Canada originally, like me. Or perhaps they went to school in New Orleans, where I live now.

Those points of shared interest or background help create instant connections. Best of all is that they feel authentic, rather than forced. I do this with pretty much everyone I’m about to meet in a business context, and I’m always puzzled as to why more people don’t do the same. The return on investment of that 60-second search is huge.

Work On Something Together

To me, the best way to build a lasting relationship with someone is to work on something with them, rather than just sharing a coffee, drink or meal. For example, companies are always forming committees to work on some new initiative. Raise your hand. Show colleagues what you can do, make an impression, and be reliable. Treat it as if you were auditioning for a new job. Impress people and they may think of you when an opening comes up.

More companies are starting internal gig platforms so that workers can move around and build new skills. Take advantage of them and build your reputation as a reliable team player. And look outside, as well. Industry associations offer great opportunities to build connections. Or join a nonprofit. Don’t feel like you have time? Remember that work tends to expand into the time you have to do it, so those other meetings can act like forcing functions to get you to work smarter and in a more focused way on your day job.

“Play In Traffic”

I first heard that memorable phrase—“play in traffic”—from Joseph Plumeri, who was CEO of Willis Group HoldingsWSH -0.6%, an insurance brokerage, when I interviewed him. “Everything that I have done started because I went out and I played in traffic and something happened,” Plumeri told me. “It means that if you push yourself out there and you see people and do things and participate and get involved, something happens.”

And that doesn’t mean that you should say yes to everything. Figure out a useful framework for what you sign up for and what you turn down, because “no” is an important word to add to your vocabulary. For me, the simple filter has always been, is this directionally in line with where I want to go? If it would broaden my skills as a journalist (earlier in my career) or if I would learn more about leadership (the current chapter of my career), my default was and is to say yes. I figured I’d learn something new and perhaps expand my network, and I’ve now got enough years under my belt to see the benefit of playing in traffic.

#JobSearch : 4 Thoughtful Questions To Ask When Networking. Question- Do You Know How to Network for a Job?

The most thoughtful questions to ask when networking are tailored to the person you’re talking to, as well as the issue you’re discussing. If the issue at hand is that you’re looking for a job, ideally you have researched the general career path for your target line of work, so your questions uncover new insights or nuances not easily available to the general public (i.e., what an employer really wants) — this can help you advance your job application. If the person you’re talking to is someone at a target employer, ideally you have researched the company and/or job opening enough so your questions uncover specific hiring priorities — this can be a deciding factor in the job interview process.

That said, sometimes you don’t have advance preparation time to do any tailoring – for example, if you’re meeting someone for the first time at a conference or other professional event. In that case, tailor as much as you can, and keep in mind some untailored but still helpful questions that can work in many situations. Here are four thoughtful questions to ask when networking:

1 – What brings you to this event?

This is a friendly and easy way to open a conversation with a stranger, but importantly, this question zeroes in on your new contact’s priorities. The best networking is focused on the other person, so understanding what they’re looking for can help you help them. You might be able to make introductions for them to others at the event, or in your follow-up post-event you might share a helpful article or make meaningful recommendations because you know what they’re working on.

2 – How did you become [ROLE] or enter [INDUSTRY]?

Usually people introduce themselves by talking about where they work and what they do, or it might even be on their name tag (e.g., accountant at EY). Asking about their origin story is a friendly way to learn more about their background without sounding like you’re interrogating them. How did you get into accounting? Have you always been an accountant? Have you worked at EY your entire career?

People love to talk about themselves and wax nostalgic about their early days, so it’s a fun question for your new contact. For you, it’s an opportunity to learn about their background and gauge how you want to tailor the conversation and follow-up going forward. If there’s overlap between their career path and what you are targeting, you may want to schedule further conversation post-event to ask more questions later (you never want to monopolize someone’s time at an event where there are others they may want to meet). If there doesn’t seem to be an obvious collaboration opportunity, you can focus on making more of a social connection for now (this is still valuable since you never know who or what people know, and your overall network is critical to tapping the hidden job market).

3 – What do you love most about working in [ROLE or INDUSTRY]?

In addition to or instead of asking about someone’s origin story (question 2), you can ask what they love most about being an accountant, working in the accounting industry or working at EY specifically. This is a positively framed question, which encourages your new contact stays to keep a happy state of mind. It’s also an open-ended question (not a closed, Yes or No choice), which encourages your new contact to say as little or as much as they’d like.

As you hear your new contact talk about what they love about their work, listen for what parts of their job overlap with what you want to do – this might be an opportunity to collaborate, or an area where they can share helpful insights with you. If you don’t see any overlap, hearing what your new contact is interested in and passionate about will at least help you deepen the social connection.

4 – What do you know now that you wished you knew when you started?

This question encourages reflection about one’s career, and answers can go in a lot of different directions, giving you more information and time to figure out how to tailor the conversation and subsequent follow up. Some people answer it by talking about key skills and expertise that have served them well. If their career overlaps your professional objectives, this gives you insight into what you might prioritize. Even if your new contact is in a very different line of work, there may be some general pearls of wisdom that could apply to you, or at least you’ll glean some insights for your accounting friends!

Some people talk about critical choices along the way – why they decided to join EY, stay in accounting or pivot to accounting (if they initially did something else). You might learn something about the industry at large or different companies in that market. Even if your new contact is in a different line of work than you, hearing about different companies and industries is helpful to your overall understanding of the job market.

Thoughtful questions focus on learning about the other person

The best networking is tailored, and genuine networking relationships are built over time (here’s a checklist to see if your networking is paying off). Therefore, the most thoughtful questions when meeting people are the ones that enable you to learn enough about your new contacts so you can tailor your follow-up in a meaningful way (e.g., make relevant recommendations, share helpful information). Knowing more about your new contacts also allows you to prioritize which ones you’ll focus on for your job search right now v. general relationships you can nurture over time for your overall professional network.

#JobSearch : How To Survive And Thrive During The Holidays And Into The New Year. Great Game Plan for the Holidays!

The new year is right around the corner. For some Americans, 2023 was challenging, as they had to contend with high inflation and rising costs eating into their paychecks. White-collar professionals face job insecurity due to threats brought on by the ascendancy of artificial intelligence, offshoring jobs to other countries and corporate cost-cutting, which has included numerous rounds of layoffs for companies.

One of the best things about this time of year is the shift in attitude. It’s the season for taking some time off from work, seeing family, taking much-needed trips, or just relaxing and practicing self-care. The holidays can be stressful for others, as you must wrap up all year-end projects while hosting family and friends.

How To Balance Everything

To get off on the right foot, you must start by being organized. Meet with your manager to calibrate the expectations and deliverables required during the holiday season.

Write down a list of priorities. This should include the tasks you’re responsible for, bringing your staff up to date with their work and continuing to loop in your direct supervisor to ensure everyone is on the same page. Planning helps to alleviate any stress and anxiety. Since you will be pulled in different directions, ensure that you have a structure and routine in place so you don’t get off track.

Minimize distractions when working. Turn off notifications, put your phone in another room and try to find a quiet spot to avoid holiday noise or conversations when you need to be productive. Consider listening to focus music and be sure to take breaks intentionally. Schedule microbreaks during work sessions to recharge. Use them to stretch, meditate, take a short walk outside or do an activity you enjoy.

With so many holiday events and tasks, fatigue can easily set in. Counter this by keeping your sleep schedule consistent and trying to get a good night’s sleep.

You must also allow time for self-introspection. Use the slower days this time of year affords you to reflect on your 2023. What goals did you accomplish? What lessons did you learn?

Looking Forward To 2024

To thrive, you must set your intentions for the new year. Establish what your goals are for 2024 and break them into monthly and quarterly benchmarks. Focus on one to three intentions that guide your days. An intention could be a value, desired trait or action pattern.

Define the position or job title you aim to have in 2024. Map the skills and experience you’ll need through courses, projects or volunteering. Take online courses and certifications. Use extra holiday downtime to gain qualifications and high-demand skills for career advancement.

Attend holiday parties or set up video chats over coffee or lunch to build key relationships. Network and connect with colleagues, bosses, clients and industry peers.

To get a headstart, prepare for upcoming projects and priorities in Q1. Sketch out project plans and brainstorm creative direction. Research trends and innovations in your industry by reading trade journals or books and listening to podcasts.

After self-reflection, you may realize that your current job doesn’t fill you with purpose. If you feel like a job switch is in order, update your résumé and LinkedIn profile and audit your digital footprint to ensure you represent yourself respectfully on social media. To position yourself as a thought leader or leading expert in your space, create content by writing blog posts, making short-form videos or starting an industry-focused podcast to get noticed. Reach out to recruiters to learn about new opportunities.

By doing all of these things, you will set an excellent precedent for the new year. The momentum will keep building upon itself, bringing you closer to your professional goals.
