#ResumeWriting : 10 Must-Have Skills To Put On Your Resume In 2024. Must Read before You Submit your REsume. Great REAd!

May 29, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Have you ever felt tempted to skip the skills section in your resume, just to get to the most important part—your employment history? After all, it’s your employment track record that matters, right?

Recruiters and employers on LinkedIn don’t seem to think so. “Skills have become more important than ever in landing opportunities today,” said LinkedIn’s head of product for Jobseeker, Employer Brand, and Skills, Rohan Rajiv in 2022. “In fact, over 40% of companies on LinkedIn globally explicitly rely on skills to search and identify job candidates on LinkedIn (up 20% year-over-year).“

This staggering figure is certainly set to increase even more in 2024, as more companies turn to new and unconventional methods to evaluate the skill set of job applicants, and LinkedIn continues to empower applicants and recruiters alike with state-of-the-art tools to showcase and filter skills.

All this demonstrates that although your employment background is important, your skills and strengths—especially the ones unique to the role—are even more important. And off LinkedIn, there is an increased focus on skills-based-hiring, leading employers to place greater weighting on the skills a candidate includes in their resume.

While you should always look out for the core skills listed in the job posting and ensure you put them on your resume, there are some other skills you should always aim to include in your resume (whether in the skills section, your online portfolio, LinkedIn profile, or throughout the professional profile and employment sections).

And of course, it might seem fairly obvious, but don’t forget to only include those skills that you can truthfully say you possess. Lying on your resume will work against you and you’ll get caught out.

Top 10 Skills To Put On Your Resume

According to FlexJobs, some of the core skills that should be put on your resume include a combination of soft, or “power” skills and hard skills, listed below:

1. Problem-solving

Employers want to onboard candidates who take ownership for a problem instead of shifting or evading responsibility. Working out creative solutions to a business or customer issue is a skill that is, at least for the present, irreplaceable by AI.

2. Critical thinking

Listed in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2023 report, critical thinking is a skill akin to problem-solving, that involves evaluating a problem and possible solutions, and developing new and improved methods of working.

3. Flexibility

Although this has become a taboo term for employers and employees to discuss, it’s importance cannot be evaded. So far as possible, maintain a degree of flexibility in your work, reaching a compromise with your prospective employer to ensure both parties are happy with working arrangements, and learn how to be dynamic and embrace change.

4. Communication

The importance of communication skills can never be overrated. They are needed everywhere to ensure the smooth delivery of projects, streamlined processes, and a healthy work environment. Get specific on your communication skills, showcasing aspects such as presentation skills, conflict resolution, negotiation, or even writing copy, depending on your role of course.

5. Teamwork

The saying goes, “Teamwork makes the dream work.” Although it might sound cheesy and you may not enjoy working with people, it’s essential to know how to collaborate and communicate well within your team and cross-functional teams. It will be very difficult to find a role where teamwork is not involved to some degree.

6. Digital skills

You’d be hard-pressed to find a job that does not require you to possess digital skills. Almost every role requires the use of company-specific software, design software, MS office suite, or a CRM. You should highlight the technical skills that you are proficient or comfortable with, including any that you are currently learning.

And if you observe through your research that the employer uses a specific type of software, always ensure you include this in your technical skills list (including proficiency level if possible).

7. Design

You don’t need to be a designer to need to have a grasp of design. Design principles (and related software) appear everywhere, from engineering, to social media management, to creating the slide deck for a PowerPoint presentation, to event planning.

8. Data analysis

Data analytics is another in-demand skill that is necessary, even outside of the data profession itself. If you find yourself called upon to analyze reports, Excel spreadsheets, or other data, to arrive at conclusions or to inform decision-making, you’re likely doing some form of data analysis.

9. Negotiation

Sales, partnerships and agreements, and internal stakeholder arrangements all require negotiation skills to some degree. Add this skill to your resume and include some proof of where you have used it successfully, as a bonus.

10. Mathematics

No, do not list “mathematics” in your resume unless you’re straight out of high school. But mathematical skills? Absolutely. Think about budget management, financial forecasting, cost reduction, statistical analysis, probabilities, machine learning, and financial modelling.

These are all highly desirable and specific skills.

Remember most importantly, listing skills is a relatively easy job. Detailing how you demonstrated them in your roles and the positive impact they made as a result, is another job altogether. Be careful that you do not fall into the copy/paste trap, without ensuring the skills listed are relevant, truly reflect you, and are backed, as far as possible, with evidence.

#BestofFSCBlog : Over 26K Read- How Job Seekers Can Get Ahead Of The Summer Slowdown. Steps to Maximize your Chances of Finding a New Job. Great REad!

May 27, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States, and while hiring may slow down a bit, it does not mean you have to put your job search on hold.

There are action steps you can take during the summer season to maximize your chances of finding a new job.

Job Search Basics

The shifting attitudes, schedules and seasons do not diminish the value or necessity of tried-and-true job-hunting methods. Proven strategies like networking, tailoring your résumé and cover letters, researching companies and practicing for interviews remain crucial regardless of the temperature outside.

Ensure that your résumé is up-to-date, highlights your most relevant skills and achievements and is tailored to specific job descriptions. Craft compelling cover letters that showcase your enthusiasm and qualifications for each position you apply for.

Polish your LinkedIn profile, ensuring it accurately reflects your skills and experience. Consider having an optimized website or online portfolio showcasing your work, especially if you are in a creative field.

Reconnect with old colleagues, friends or classmates in person or on LinkedIn for potential job leads. Attend industry events or online webinars to expand your network and make new connections. Reach out to people in your desired field for informational interviews to learn more about their roles and companies.

Anticipate frequently asked interview questions and practice your responses. Research the companies you’re interested in and prepare insightful questions to demonstrate your genuine interest.

Set up alerts on job boards for positions that match your criteria. Consider working with a recruiter specializing in your industry who can connect you with relevant opportunities.

Job Hunting Strategies For The Summer Months

While maintaining your job search momentum, it’s okay to adjust your pace during the summer. Prioritize high-quality applications and focus on companies that resonate with you. Even if you don’t hear back immediately, do not ghost recruiters or hiring managers. Send a follow-up email after a week or two if you haven’t heard anything, as this demonstrates continued interest and professionalism. Summer can be a great time for informational interviews. People might be more relaxed and have more time to chat during the upcoming months.

Take advantage of the potentially slower pace to take online courses, attend workshops or gain new certifications relevant to your field. This can enhance your skill set, making you a more attractive candidate to employers.

Additional Career Advice

Job hunting can be a marathon—not a sprint. Stay positive, focused and don’t get discouraged if you do not land your dream job right away. Hiring managers can pick up on a candidate’s level of enthusiasm and positivity during the interview process. Project confidence in your skills and your ability to contribute to the company. Be open to new opportunities or roles that might not have been your initial target. You might discover a great career path you hadn’t considered before.

Be Better Than You Were Yesterday

Dedicate time to improving yourself. Read books about your industry, watch or listen to relevant career related and motivational podcasts.

Plan out what you want to do to make an impact once the summer is over and it’s back to business as usual, and design a strategy to achieve these goals. Write them down and follow up on a daily basis.

Focus On Your Wellness

Take a break from the constant emails and work notifications and allow your mind and body to truly relax and recharge. Catch up on sleep or establish a regular sleep schedule. Feeling well-rested can significantly improve your mood and energy levels.

Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga or spending time in nature. Since the weather is nice, venture outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Go on a hike, jog, run or walk to maintain mental clarity, as well as your physical health.

Pursue activities you enjoy, whether it’s reading, writing, listening to music, playing games or creating art. Focusing on hobbies can be a great way to de-stress and express yourself creatively.

Spend quality time with friends and family. Engage in face-to-face conversations, share meals or participate in activities you all enjoy. Strong social connections are essential for emotional well-being.

Take time to reflect on things you’re grateful for in your life. Keeping a gratitude journal can be a helpful way to cultivate a positive mindset, which will be critical to your job search success.

#JobSearch : 5 LinkedIn Profile Hacks That Help Recruiters Find You. In an Over-Saturated Market Like This One.

May 1, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

In an over-saturated market like this one, by far the easiest way to find a job is for a recruiter to see you. Now that LinkedIn membership has grown to more than 1 billion people globally, your discoverability on the platform is more crucial than ever before.

Regular users of the platform can see first, second- and third-degree connections. Recruiters using the LinkedIn Recruiter tool are able to surface every user worldwide, which is obviously an overwhelmingly large talent pool. LinkedIn in has a series of powerful algorithms that help recruiters surgically refine their outreach: understanding how these work enables you to optimize your profile for maximum discoverability:

1. Utilize The Skills Functionality

LinkedIn recently increased the number of skills you can include on your profile from 50 to 100. You can append skills to three areas on your profile: against each role you’ve held, against any volunteer positions and against your education. Utilizing the skills functionality is increasingly critical, as platform-wide 40% of recruiter searches now begin with skills (as opposed to beginning with job title and company). Wherever possible avoid generic skills like “project management” and opt for greater specificity such as “agile,” “waterfall” or “scrum.”

2. Interact With Places Where You Want To Work

Whether a recruiter search begins with job title or with skills, the first returned universe of candidates tends to be fairly broad. One of the ways LinkedIn Recruiter offers to slice the data is offering up a subset of candidates that are “engaged with your talent brand.” Users that have applied for jobs, followed the company page on LinkedIn or engaged with posts made from the company page show up in this pool. You’re more likely to hear from a recruiter at AppleApple 0.0% if you’re engaged with Apple’s talent brand, so be sure to follow all the pages of the companies you’d like to work at.

3. Utilize The Open To Work Feature

Recognizing that not everyone wants to advertise that they’re ready for their next role, LinkedIn offers up two related pieces of functionality. The green, visible to all users, “Open To Work” banner stirred up outsized controversy, even though LinkedIn’s own data shows it’s delivering exactly the outcomes it was designed for. Whatever you decide about the public banner, you should absolutely use the private notification that lets recruiters know that you’re interested in new opportunities: users that do so receive 40% more outreach from recruiters than those that don’t.

4. Upload Your Resume To LinkedIn

Uploading your resume serves two important functions: it enables you to apply for roles directly from the app, and as long as you’ve selected the toggle to “share resume data with recruiters” it significantly enhances your discoverability. You can rest assured that your resume is only visible to recruiters using the LinkedIn Recruiter product and is not visible to ordinary users.

5. Regularly Check All Your Message Inboxes

In both the app and desktop versions of LinkedIn, messages are now sorted in to “focused” and “other” subfolders, and you should get into the habit of regularly checking both. Across the whole of LinkedIn, the average response rate for recruiter outreach is just 30%. For every ten candidates recruiters send messages to, only three respond, and that includes folks responding to say they’re not interested.

Whether or not you’re in the market for a job right now, you almost certainly know someone who is. Get into the habit of responding to recruiters that reach out to you so that you can both connect folks in your network with opportunity, and crucially establish relationships with recruiters that may well serve you in the future.

The post-pandemic talent market is incredibly difficult to navigate, allowing your LinkedIn profile to do some heavy lifting for you helps to differentiate you from the competition.

#JobSearch : 10 Things You Should Do When Messaging Recruiters On LinkedIn. A MUst REAd!

January 21, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

If you’re someone who’s on the hunt for a new role this year, your ability to effectively find and approach recruiters on LinkedIn can have a direct impact on your job prospects. With LinkedIn recently crossing 1 billion users globally in 200 countries, it firmly remains the world’s most popular and powerful online professional network.

According to data from LinkedIn, 65 million job seekers visit LinkedIn Jobs every week. Members submit 140 job applications every second, and six people are hired every minute through LinkedIn. Additionally, an average of 20 InMails are sent every second with job opportunities, according to data from last year.

Although many recruiters do appreciate speaking with candidates, reaching out to recruiters through LinkedIn is a very effective way to make initial contact. LinkedIn has found InMails are 3x more likely to be accepted than a cold call and 6x more likely to be accepted than emails, according to LinkedIn data from January 2022.

Still, with recruiters getting inundated with incoming contacts, they simply can’t respond to every single candidate who reaches out. To get an actual response from a recruiter, candidates should approach them in the right way by following these 10 steps.

1. Target Relevant Recruiters

Before even crafting your LinkedIn message, consider investing time into figuring out which recruiters work with companies in your target sector. Sending a generic message to a bunch of random recruiters is unlikely to yield any responses. “Only target those who recruit within your space to increase the likelihood of you receiving responses,” says Matt Collingwood, Managing Director of IT recruitment agency VIQU. “These recruiters will be actively looking for talented people in your space to place into roles.”

You should also target only those recruiters who have roles relevant to your professional background according to Sarah Doughty, Vice President of Talent Operations at TalentLab. She says recruiters get a bad rap for not responding to applicants, but the reality is that recruiters can get hundreds of applications each day from candidates with no relevant background. “Recruiters’ main focus is to find the right person for the role, and that’s a tougher task than many realize. If they believe for a second there’s a chance a candidate could be hired for the role, they’ll respond,” states Doughty.

2. Know The Recruiter’s Profile

You must do your research on the recruiter before reaching out. Familiarize yourself with his/her professional history, interests, and educational background before contacting them. “A great way to stand out amongst the crowd is to find common ground. If you have a connection to the recruiter in any way, whether that’s a college, town, or personal connection, definitely mention it.” says Patrick Cahill, president of #twiceasnice Recruiting. “It shows you’ve done research into them, and likely the role. Plus, it gives a nice, personal touch.”

The vast majority of candidates will skip this step, focusing on the role and not the recruiter. However, connecting with a recruiter is as much about building a relationship as it is about applying for a role. Investing some upfront time in getting to know the recruiter and figuring out how you can help them can go a long way in fostering a positive, longer-term professional relationship that bears fruit in the long run.

3. Reference A Specific Job

Candidates should not leave the legwork for uncovering a potential role to the recruiter. Instead, identify a target role before sending any message to a recruiter.

Claudia Garcia, senior talent acquisition partner at Adecco, cautions against putting the burden on a recruiter to find job openings that align with your interests or background. “Recruiters may receive hundreds of messages on LinkedIn every month. A common trend we see is candidates overlooking the importance of doing their research before reaching out.” Garcia states that too often, candidates will send their resume to a recruiter and ask for a job without referencing a specific job opening or explaining how their background aligns with that role.

Maria Ada Santos, senior recruiter and founder of the Nettle Agency, agrees that job seekers too often reach out, asking whether a recruiter can find potential roles. “Those messages tend to make recruiters feel like they’re being asked to do extra work, and many recruiters ignore them entirely,” Santos says. “The most important thing to do is be clear about which specific job you’re interested in. Reference the specific job you’re interested in and share a 1-3 sentence summary of why you’d be a good fit.”

Remember that recruiters’ primary responsibility is to fill roles, not to help candidates find jobs. They work for and are paid by their clients, not candidates. Therefore, the easier you can make it for them to connect the dots between you and these open roles, the more likely they’ll engage with you.

4. Customize Your Message

All recruiters who weighed in on this article stated that mass copy-and-paste outreach is extremely obvious and should be avoided. Garcia encourages candidates to focus on quality over quantity by dedicating more time to research when contacting a recruiter on LinkedIn. “Tailor your messages to specific roles, as opposed to sending generic and random messages that may not yield positive results,” Garcia recommends.

According to Dave Curtis, European a managing director at Harnham, recruiters receive thousands of chatbot or sales messages, so quickly making your message personal and relevant to that recruiter is critical. “While it’s understandable candidates want to apply for multiple jobs, investing even a small amount of time into tailoring their approach will go a long way and could make the difference between a recruiter reading it or not,” Curtis states.

Also, if someone referred you to the recruiter, Kyle Langworthy, a partner at Riviera Partners, recommends you mention that person’s name in your initial message. “When you tie into the recruiter’s network, you have now called their social capital into the mix, increasing the weight and importance of a reply.”

5. Include Only Relevant Details

Err on the side of keeping your message concise and to the point. Recruiters operate under time constraints, so a lengthy essay on LinkedIn won’t likely capture their attention and could potentially deter them from exploring your profile,” say Craig Furniss, senior principal consultant at TechNET CxO.

Think of your message as a short conversation opener rather than a full story or job application. “Although it’s tempting to try and get everything across all at once to convince a recruiter that you’re a good candidate right away, they’re likely to be overwhelmed and switch off if your first message to them reads like an entire cover letter,” says James Lloyd-Townshend, chairman & CEO at Anderson Frank. He says a LinkedIn message is just not the right place for a candidate’s full pitch.

At the same time, you should include some details about your professional situation and ambitions. “Include your location, whether you’re looking for permanent or contract work, expected salary, and core skills and experience,” says Collingwood. He also recommends giving the recruiter some talking points to eventually share with clients. “Recruiters love providing their clients with impressive metrics and facts about candidates. Consider including a few short bullet points that detail positive things you have done in previous roles.”

6. Articulate Your Value

The onus is on you as a candidate to explain exactly why you’re the right candidate for a role, rather than leaving it up to the recruiter to connect the dots. “Instead of asking ‘Which jobs fit my background?’, highlight how your skills and experience align with the specific role you’ve applied for,” says Garcia.

Make it easier for a recruiter to engage with you by sharing a brief summary of skills, experience, and value you’ve added to past roles and organizations, according to Geoff Shepherd, CEO of iSource Group. “Don’t make the recruiter do the work for you,” he says. “Be as specific as you can about what you are looking for and what aspirations you have. This makes it much easier for the recruiter to align your requirements with their clients’ needs.”

7. Don’t Ask For Too Much Too Soon

Just like going on a first date and asking someone to get married would certainly scare someone off, immediately putting recruiters on the spot to present you with a promising job opening in your first outreach is unrealistic.

“Avoid directly asking if there’s a job for you,” says Garcia. “Instead, apply through the company’s career page first. Introduce yourself and indicate that you’ve already submitted your resume with an application, expressing your interest in learning more about the role.”

You as the candidate should be doing the legwork rather than expecting the recruiter to find a role for you, especially since recruiters primarily answer to their clients who hire them rather than candidates who approach them.

8. Attach Your Resume

Assuming you’ve identified a promising role for which you feel you’re a viable candidate, you can make a recruiter’s life easier by attaching your resume to your LinkedIn message. Even though people can access your LinkedIn profile, attaching your resume just saves a round of back and forth, enabling a recruiter to immediately review it rather than having to request it.

“For all LinkedIn communications it’s beneficial to attach a copy of your CV at every opportunity,” says George Barnes, CEO and co-founder of Hamilton Barnes. “Time is gold dust to a recruiter so anything that you can do to cut down the number of steps involved will doubtlessly win you brownie points.”

Surprisingly, many candidates seem to overlook this simple step of making it easier for a recruiter to not only conduct an initial screening but also follow up. “You’d be amazed by the number of candidates who message me with no contact details in their message or on their profile,” says Collingwood. He says messaging back and forth on LinkedIn can burn a lot of valuable time, so recommends you include your email and phone number to make it easier for them to quickly connect with you.

9. Facilitate A Further Discussion

Speaking of making life easier for a recruiter, don’t forget to reduce the friction involved with having an actual live conversation, especially if a recruiter is interested in speaking with you. This means simplifying the process of scheduling a time to speak.

Barnes points out that recruiters tend to prefer speaking with candidates rather than qualifying them over a single LinkedIn message. “If a candidate can propose several times that they can speak that week in their initial message, that will be hugely beneficial.”

He also suggests candidates consider using a scheduling tool that can save some scheduling back and forth. “Personally, if I received timeslots from a candidate via Calendly, I’d be far more inclined to schedule a call to chat, simply because they took the initiative to make it so straightforward for me.”

Simply expressing a desire to speak can also help differentiate you from other candidates overly reliant on virtual communications. “Asking the recruiter for a live conversation, whether by phone or video, to discuss the details of the position and your potential aptitude communicates to them that you’re serious about the role and that you’re looking to move things forward,” says Lloyd-Townshend.

10. Follow Up Proactively But Patiently

Following up is generally seen as acceptable and even welcome if you don’t overdo it. Given the large volume of incoming messages a recruiter receives, your message may have just been missed or overlooked.

Rob Scott, managing director of Aaron Wallis encourages candidates to follow up within about a week. “By following up, you show the recruiter that you are genuinely interested in the role and are willing to go the extra mile to get noticed,” he says.

Curtis agrees, stating that candidates should proactively follow up to demonstrate sincere interest. “If they feel that they are right for a job, candidates shouldn’t be afraid to be bold with their approach,” he says.

However, there’s a fine line between demonstrating enthusiasm and nagging a recruiter. Doughty cautions that candidates should not be pushy or follow up too much, which can be off-putting and signal you might approach your interactions with their clients in the same pushy manner. “Messages where candidates demand a meeting or come off as entitled will scare off a recruiter, who will think twice before presenting them to a hiring manager as a solid option.”

Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out To Recruiters

One final point. You should also ensure your LinkedIn profile is crafted in a way that stands out to recruiters. And if you’ve ever wondered whether putting the “Open To Work” photo frame around your profile photo makes any difference, it can. According to LinkedIn, members who turn on Open to Work on their LinkedIn profile are 40% more likely to receive InMails from recruiters.

Ultimately, increasing your chances of recruiters responding to your messages on LinkedIn requires a combination of targeting and customizing your messages, clearly articulating your unique value, and making it easy for recruiters to speak with you. By following these 10 steps consistently, you can significantly increase your chances of building a relationship with a recruiter who may just open the doors to your next dream job.

Endorsements and Recommendations are the currency of credibility on LinkedIn. They validate your skills and professional standing. 5. Grow Your Thought Leadership And Content Strategy

Turn on Creator Mode on LinkedIn to amplify your personal brand. 6. Engage With Your Community

Engage with content that aligns with your professional interests. Like, comment, and share to foster connections and demonstrate your engagement with your industry or job function.

If demonstrating thought leadership is a 2024 goal, consider launching a LinkedIn Newsletter (you need Creator Mode turned on). Establish a publication frequency that aligns with your schedule and content capacity—be it daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. And focus on one topic – something that will be of interest to your audience. Strong personal brands are clear, consistent and constant.

8. Embrace Visual Storytelling

Rich media can dramatically increase engagement and add visual appeal to your profile. Share photos, infographics, short videos, your video bio and visually engaging insights that reflect your professional narrative. Use the Featured element of your profile to host this multimedia content.

LinkedIn provides data that can help you refine your communications plan. Use LinkedIn analytics to refine your strategy. Assess the reach and engagement of your content and adapt your approach based on what engages your audience most effectively.

By implementing these nine strategies, you’re setting the stage for a transformative 2024. LinkedIn is not merely a platform, but a vibrant community where your brand can thrive. Harness its power and anticipate the interesting opportunities that come your way this year.

#JobSearch : 3 Things To Do This Holiday Season To Get Ahead In Your Job Search. Get a Jump Before the Masses. Great Read.

December 9, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

While the holiday season is traditionally a time for celebrations, it also presents a unique opportunity for job seekers to get ahead in their search. Companies often set their sights on the upcoming year’s goals, making this season an opportune time to get ready for their strategic hires.

The peak hiring season comes around January and February, so better maximize the extra days off to ensure that your job search remains merry and bright! Here’s how you can navigate the job market and be prepared for the hiring frenzy right around the corner:

1. Reflect On Your Last Year

Aside from attending holiday gatherings and events with friends and loved ones, you can make the most of the downtime to reflect on your biggest wins and the lessons learned from the past year. Taking time for introspection can also help you set your goals for the upcoming year.

From your reflections, make a list of what you want to do and no longer want to do, and go all in on your job search for the type of work that you actually enjoy. By starting your job search during the holidays, you’re strategically positioning yourself to catch the attention of recruiters gearing up for new projects and expansion. And you’ll have a more tailored approach to go after a role that best suits your skills and interests.

2. Update Your LinkedIn and Resume

These next few weeks are also a good time to start to updating your online profile and resume to make them more relevant for certain roles and companies. These two will serve as your first impression once you’re actively applying for new opportunities so need to get them ready for recruiters.

For your resume, start with the job description of your target role and then tailor your resume accordingly. Remember to include and highlight your best wins and skills that match the job title and responsibilities that you’re going for. You can make your resume applicant tracking system (ATS) friendly by using a simple resume template and also including relevant keywords and experiences. This increases the likelihood of your resume catching the attention of the hiring team and landing you an interview!

And the next step is your LinkedIn profile. Update your About section to include recent wins and your email address for direct communication. And use this holiday break to update your titles in your Experience section.

While you’re at it, update your LinkedIn headline as well, following this formula: Current (or future) title | Key skills and industry keywords | Big career win

For example: SEO Lead at ABC Company | Driving Digital Growth & Conversions | Boosted Website Visits by 300% through Organic SEO Strategies

3. Wish People Happy Holidays

Sending thank you cards and holiday greetings can be a thoughtful and positive way to reconnect with people who made an impact on your career. This group might also include professionals that you have not yet met and want to network with next year. Handwritten cards are special, but you can also send notes through LinkedIn, and send them warm regards for the holiday season.

When reaching out, personalize your message and mention something specific about their work that you appreciate or find interesting. But make sure to keep the focus on your gratitude for their support and keep the holiday greeting genuine and separate from any job-related requests. Let the season’s goodwill set a positive tone for future interactions.

As we say goodbye to the past year and welcome new beginnings, embrace the valuable connections you’ve made, the skills you’ve acquired, and the accomplishments you’ve achieved. Use these experiences as fuel to drive your career forward. Happy job hunting and happy holidays!

#YourCareer : Why it Pays to Provide Recommendations to Others on LinkedIn. How Many Recommendations do You Have or Better, Given?

November 1, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

One of LinkedIn’s most vital, yet neglected, goals is to obtain as many recommendations from past supervisors, bosses, peers, and co-workers as possible to enrich your profile. You can never have enough! If you are undergoing interviews for job consideration, future employers can link to the recommenders and find out more about you on the social media platform. They can also contact your referrals to get the ‘skinny’ on your past performance.

But what if you are not actively looking for a job and are more of a passive careerist? What is the point of getting involved in the recommendation process? Exposure and branding. Did you catch in the previous paragraph that I noted future employers can link to the recommender and engage? What do they see when they click on the link to your name in another person’s recommendation? Your profile. This subtle branding gives you more exposure and eyeballs on your LinkedIn profile and reputation, enabling you to build your brand.

Your LinkedIn profile is a rich marketing vehicle for your skills and capabilities. Once you have reached 100% profile completeness, recruiters and headhunters may see your referrals to others and link through to your profile. If you provide your contact information in the summary section, recruiters can easily pick up a phone or send an email. Once folks link into your profile – you may be a ‘better candidate’ for the position they are trying to fill. What a great way to passively shop for a new job, right?

Who do you want to provide recommendations for? Look for the shakers and movers in the industry with which you worked in the past or your current position. Look for your LinkedIn connections with many folks connecting to them. Search out profile owners who have a considerable following. Look at the company profiles for businesses you used to work for employees on the profile for which you can provide recommendations.

On some company pages, you may see profile owners in a listing for ‘most recommended.’ Clicking on that profile might take you to the profile where you can send a connection invitation to a high-powered industry expert. Once they accept your invitation to connect, more people will look at your profile because they want to connect to that mover and shaker, too!

Remember that exposure – in a good way – is vital to branding yourself and increasing your public relations to a new and potential strategic alliance with future employers. Get your name in front of past co-workers – they may remember what a great job you did and realize you are still a great job candidate. Many companies are realizing that alumni job candidates are even more valuable as rehires than brand-new employees who come to the job as strangers. Recognizing your name as a referral may prompt fond memories of your past performance…and result in an interview phone call!

#JobSearch : The Right (And Wrong) Way To Network On LinkedIn. How Do You Network on LinkedIn?

October 11, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

The internet has shaken up how we do business. But in many ways, old-school rules and skills still apply. Networking is one of those skills that will never go away.

Networking is crucial to learn because it opens you up to new relationships that can drive big opportunities down the road. While physical networking events like conferences, seminars, and industry mixers still hold their value, the digital age has introduced a powerful new player in the game: online platforms like LinkedIn. Here’s how to network like a professional, what to avoid, and the right strategy to build life-changing connections.

Do: Personalize Every Message

One of the best features of LinkedIn is that it allows you to add a note along with your connection invitation. This lets you introduce yourself to a potential connection and make a strong first impression, which will greatly increase your chance of being connected.

LinkedIn does limit your note to 300 characters, which means that you will need to be concise yet compelling. If you’re a premium user, you can message people using InMail but upgrading to premium is not necessary for most people.

With these features available, it can be tempting to adopt a shotgun approach where you compose a generic message and send that to as many people as you can. The more people you message, the more chances of people connecting with you, right?

Well, not so much. Most people can sniff spam from miles away, and sending a generic message is a surefire way to get ignored. What you want to do instead is be authentic and personal in your intro message.

And you do that by researching people thoroughly before attempting to connect with them. Find out what you have in common, such as interests, hobbies, affiliations, or even experiences, and point them out. These are excellent conversation starters and likely to pique their attention. Here’s an example you can follow here:

Hi Dennis, always great to see other ex-consultants from UCLA here on LinkedIn! I saw you graduated in 2015 and I was just a year before you in 2014, part of the Anderson school too. Let’s stay connected here on LinkedIn. Have a great day!

If you’ve been following their work, you can also express appreciation for their work or contributions. Name specific pieces of media, such as books and articles, and let them know your perspective on them and how you can help them in the future. Put yourself in their shoes and think: If I got a message from a stranger, what would I want it to say? And then write that.

Do: Be Respectful Of Their Time

Once a person accepts your invitation request, then you’re off to the races. Gone is the 300-character limit, and you can drop them a message anytime. But just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

LinkedIn is best used to build long and fruitful professional relationships, and you do that over the long run. So while it may be tempting to immediately go in for a favor, showcase that you want to support them in other ways first. When you do reach out to connect over a phone call or coffee meeting, send them a note and acknowledge their busy schedule. This simple gesture demonstrates you respect their time and shows the kind of person you are.

Another thing to be wary of is the number of messages you send. Instead of bombarding your connections with numerous messages, focus on sending thoughtful and relevant messages. Moreover, not everyone can respond to messages immediately. So be patient and respectful of response times, and don’t pressure your connections for a quick reply.

Do: Give Without Expectations

The best LinkedIn connections are all about providing value without the expectation of immediate reward. This value can take various forms, such as sharing relevant industry news, making valuable introductions, or providing resources that can help others achieve their goals.

When you freely share your knowledge and resources, you foster goodwill and bolster your network. Most times, this good karma comes back around but even if it doesn’t, that’s okay!

It’s about nurturing these connections with genuine intent, and understanding that meaningful partnerships and opportunities often take time to develop. So be patient and be in it for the long haul.

Don’t: Be Desperate

Just like most things in life, it’s never good to be desperate, especially when networking on LinkedIn. What you want is to keep everything professional and genuine.

Desperation can result in you trying questionable networking tactics, such as unsolicited spam messages or persistent requests, which can damage your reputation and spoil potential valuable connections.

To build strong and lasting relationships on LinkedIn, you will need to exercise patience, be authentic, and a focus on mutual value. Additionally, you want to be strategic with choosing the people you want to connect with and how you write your messages.

Don’t: Reach Out to Inactive Profiles

Networking on LinkedIn is not a numbers game. It doesn’t do you any good to have hundreds of connections if none of them are going to engage with you or connect outside of LinkedIn.

This is why it makes sense for you to limit your connection requests to people who are actually active on LinkedIn. It’s generally pretty easy to figure out when someone is not actually on LinkedIn, even if they have an existing profile. Just go to their profile, scroll down to their Activity section, and see if they’ve posted, shared, or liked anything recently.

There are no hard and fast rules here, but I would focus on people who register any activity at least once a month. These people are most likely to be active on LinkedIn and receptive to your networking efforts.

If the person is inactive but you think there’s still some value to keeping track of their work, you can “follow” them instead.

Don’t: Sound Like a Sales Pitch

While a lot of sales professionals do flock to LinkedIn to expand their client base, the experienced ones understand that this is not the place to directly pitch a product or service, at least not right away.

LinkedIn is primarily a platform for building relationships, establishing credibility, and nurturing trust. Attempting to sell aggressively from the get-go is often an easy route to getting blocked or removed as a connection. As mentioned earlier, the name of the game is to engage in genuine conversations and that often doesn’t happen when you are just trying to sell something.

Key Takeaways

Networking on LinkedIn has the potential to open you up to several golden opportunities, depending on how you use the platform. The key thing to remember is always to be genuine, helpful, and professional. Focus on building long-term relationships, and not on making a quick sale or asking for a one-time favor.

In this case, slow and steady, more often than not, wins the race. Be the tortoise, not the hare. Good luck out there!

How Do You Network on LinkedIn?

#JobSearch : Here’s What To Expect From LinkedIn’s New AI Recruiter Feature And Career Coaching Chatbot. Great Read!

October 3, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Artificial intelligence can help you find a job and advance in your career. AI can write your résumé, automate networking emails, fast-track your job search, cut through the noise, secure interviews, and impress hiring managers. It also empowers recruiters to execute their jobs more efficiently and effectively. Chatbots can serve as AI career coaches, offering advice from doing well in an interview to salary negotiations.

Recruiting AI

In a wide-ranging conversation, LinkedIn vice-president of product management Hari Srinivasan shared dynamic innovations for recruiting and career coaching powered by AI. The new product—Recruiter 2024—aims to enable recruiters and talent acquisition professionals to find on-target candidates for their jobs faster.

The role of recruiters is to find the best, most suitable applicants for the job efficiently. It’s not an easy feat. Search professionals currently need to allocate many hours to sourcing qualified people for the position. This involves elaborate Boolean searches, sending dozens of emails, texting and calling prospective candidates.

“We know from talking to our recruiter customers day in and day out that finding qualified candidates fast is their top priority,” Srinivasan said. “But we also know that getting to that perfect candidate is time-consuming and hard.”

LinkedIn, the go-to site for job seekers and networking, plans to leverage generative AI technology with its insights of more than 950 million professionals, 63 million companies and 40,000 skills on the platform.

The feature will offer a clean interface with a rectangular box in which the recruiter and talent leaders can use natural language and put their hiring goals in their own words. For example, you can write, “I’m searching for a software engineer with 10 years of experience,” and then add some specific skills, background and experiences pertinent to the role. AI combined with LinkedIn’s massive data can produce the candidates the employer desperately seeks

LinkedIn will offer personalized follow-up prompts to expand or modify the search to narrow the results to the best, most appropriate applicants. The nudges can add new locations, specific skills, whether it’s hybrid, in-office or remote and other factors that the recruiters are looking for in the perfect candidates.

Recruiter 2024 will help free search professionals from many daily rote and repetitive tasks. They can spend more time preparing their candidates for interviews instead of painfully sifting through hundreds of unbefitting résumés. For contingency recruiters, finding the right candidate before your competitors is a race. If they fail in the placement of a candidate, they don’t get paid.

AI Career Coaching Advice

As things change quickly, you’ll be able to stay current and up to date. LinkedIn will roll out career development features and expand its in-demand skill library. Job seekers and professionals looking to advance within their organization or pivot their careers will have access to content built by more than 3,000 career experts.

AI-powered coaching in LinkedIn Learning features a chatbot experience offering both real-time bespoke advice tailored to the content and personalized recommendations for your needs, career goals and questions.

You can ask questions, such as:

  • “How do I put together an elevator pitch?”
  • “Can you provide some tips for writing a résumé?”
  • “I have two great job offers. Can you help me choose the right one?”
  • “What is the best way to negotiate my desired salary without being too aggressive?”
  • “Do you have a suggestion for answering tricky interview questions like, ‘Why do you want this job?’”

#JobSearch : The Best Job Boards To Get You Hired In 2023. Guess Which is the Best/Largest? You’re On It. LinkedIn.

September 16, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

There are hundreds of job boards out there all claiming to hold the ticket to your dream job. While having lots of options can be enticing, sometimes the more specific you get, the higher your chances of success become.

If you’ve been looking for a guide to the best job boards out there, you have come to the right place. Here’s my list of favorites, along with their pros and specialties, to help you land the career that you deserve. Let’s dive in!

LinkedIn (For Building Connections)

LinkedIn is the most popular job board site in the world, and for good reason. This social network slash job posting site goes beyond just jobs and helps you build connections with recruiters and hiring managers in the industries you’ve got your eyes set on.

LinkedIn allows you to:

  • Connect with potential companies, previous colleagues, and alumni from your university
  • Get endorsed for your skills and network with managers from the same field
  • Upload your resume, personalize your profile, and create your own personal brand
  • Get access to trainings and best practices in your field to help you stand out

The feature that most candidates best know LinkedIn for is the “Easy Apply” button but I think it is often overused. Instead of spamming apply for different roles, I actually recommend you take it a step further and first connect with the hiring team directly.

You can send a note like this to the recruiter when sending them a connection request:

Hi NAME,

I saw your team was recruiting for <ROLE> and I’d love to be considered.

I spent the last <# YEARS WITH COMPANY> and some of my big wins include <ACHIEVEMENTS IN YOUR ROLE>. My core skills are in <RELEVANT SKILLS FOR THE ROLE> and I think I’d be a great fit for the role you have on hand.

Let me know if you are free for a call later this week to discuss further. Thank you for your time!

Best,

YOUR NAME

Glassdoor (For Company Reviews)

Glassdoor is another site with one of the largest volumes of job postings from all sorts of different industries. With Glassdoor’s company information, you can get an insider’s peek into the company culture, type of management, career mobility and work-life balance. And that’s on top of the info you get on salary, total compensation details, and benefits.

Glassdoor comes with free and paid versions, with the latter giving you access to more advanced analytics to help you decide better if the job fits you well. And if you’re looking for companies that tick all the boxes for an overall fulfilling career, be sure to check out Glassdoors’ list of Best Places to Work.

Getwork (For Verified Jobs)

With the rise of job search scams, it’s important to stay vigilant out there on different job boards. It’s crucial you are reviewing jobs that are real and verified. That’s where Getwork comes into play. Getwork sources the job postings directly from the hiring company’s careers page and provides you details about the role including information on salary range, remote opportunities, company background, and more.

Wellfound (For Startups)

Originally known as AngelList, Wellfound is the best place to find roles for hot, new startups. Also, the interface is clean, hip and fun, much like the job environment it promotes. From engineering jobs at AI companies to operations at emerging FinTech firms, Wellfound has a little bit of everything when it comes to the world’s best startups. Beyond the role, you can also find a lot of information on the company, its founders, and how much capital they have raised. It’s a good idea to target some of these companies that have just raised money because you know they will be in growth mode!

RemoteOK (For Remote Work)

If you’re done with the office forever, then I suggest you check out RemoteOK for remote work opportunities. The site offers a heap of different jobs that are freelance and remote to give you that leeway to do other things, and have control of your daily workflow. Flexibility is the name of the game when you search for jobs and gigs on RemoteOK. While they mainly focus on tech roles, there are also lots of great opportunities in account management, finance, operations, and more.

Choose What’s Best For You

There are many factors that you have to consider in choosing and applying for a new job — the salary, work hours, location and/or remote, the values the company holds, your manager, and more.

But the key to unlocking the door to the right job for you is you knowing what you are looking for in the first place. With a clear set of your values and priorities, it will be easier for you to review these job board sites and find the dream job you’ve always wanted!
