#JobSearch : Why Recruiters Won’t Give You Feedback After Interviewing. How to Get Feedback. MUst REad!

Much has been written about the parlous state of the post-pandemic job market, with (righteous) anger being directed at recruiters who are ghosting candidates in the middle of interview loops. The unfortunate truth is that recruiting teams were disproportionally impacted by the pandemic, and post-pandemic, layoff cycles. Meta alone went from having more than 9,000 recruiters to fewer than 1,000, and while that’s an extreme example, it’s a barometer of the profession as a whole. There are far fewer recruiters currently in-seat, and those that are gainfully employed are drowning.

The current discourse around candidate experience (or lack thereof) points to an uncomfortable underlying truth. Even at the best of times with fully staffed, and highly trained, recruiting teams, in the majority of cases (in the U.S. at least) you can expect an outcome from your interview loops, but not much more than that. That’s because in risk-averse corporate America, we’re not allowed to give you substantive feedback.

The net result of this risk-aversion are generic boilerplate feedback statements: “there were other candidates that more closely matched our requirements” that recruiters are required to deliver ad nauseam. I recognize that these are almost as infuriating to receive as they are for the recruiter to have to deliver.

Although it is disappointing not to receive actionable feedback after an interview loop, it’s better for your sanity to assume you’re not going to get any, and then be pleasantly surprised if you do. It is even better to accept that whether you receive any feedback or not, it doesn’t really make any difference.

Broadly speaking, most Fortune 500 recruiting teams have strict guidelines around what they can and cannot share with external candidates. Depending on the level of risk-aversion at the company, that embargo can also apply to internal candidates (yes, even employees). Put bluntly these policies originate with compliance and/or legal teams that decide there is too much risk involved, and that the trade-off for a better candidate experience is not worth the risk it poses. So although recruiters often want to give you feedback, there are usually strict guardrails in place preventing them from doing so.

Context Is Everything

Even if recruiters (or hiring managers) were able to give feedback, the only thing they’d be giving feedback on is their assessment of your fit for a specific position, at a specific company, at a specific point in time, amongst a particular competitive set. Put another way, if a hiring manager at Alpha Company decides you’re not right for a Product Manager vacancy, it doesn’t mean that a hiring manager at Beta company will come to the same conclusion.

It is also perfectly possible to go through the same interview process, at the same company, multiple times and get different outcomes. That’s because even when companies control for subjectivity and have well-structured processes, the competitive set you’re up against is the variable factor. There are countless case studies on LinkedIn and Reddit of folks getting hired into their “dream” company on their fourth or fifth attempt.

At worst interviews are unstructured and highly subjective, and at their best they’re anchored to performance norms (competencies) that are specific to an organization. Passing an interview at AppleAAPL -0.3% does not mean you’ll automatically pass an interview at GoogleGOOG +0.5%.

High-quality feedback is critically important to career development, but that is not the same thing as getting feedback from an interview loop. The person interviewing you will be spending an average of 45 minutes with you, and even if the company uses robust interviewing tools, the interviewer may not have been trained on how to use them. All of this to say they are not in a position to provide you with anything substantive or actionable, no matter how much you might want them to.

How Can I Get Good Feedback?

Considering the source is crucial: Has the person giving you feedback spent sufficient time observing your work to be able to offer an objective assessment? Equally important, does the person giving you feedback consistently demonstrate the types of leadership traits you want to emulate? If they’re not the type of leader you’d like to be, there’s no need to internalize anything they offer up.

Lastly, don’t overlook the fact that actionable feedback can come from anyone that works closely with you, including peers and subordinates. Feedback from someone senior to you in the organization doesn’t make it any more valuable in the long term.

The surest way to get feedback is of course simply to ask for it, just remember to manage your expectations around who is in a position to comply with your request.

The day you’ve been waiting for is here. Today is your first round interview for that role you’ve been eyeing for a long time now. Your resume and cover letter have already done their job to get you noticed for the interview. And now, it’s time to shine in the recruiter screen!

But of course, it’s not just a straight shot to the hiring manager round. You still have to answer the questions that the recruiter has prepared.

 

Most of the time, recruiter screens are just a way to see if you are a good fit and can do the job, and will typically go through a set of common interview questions including: “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want this role,” etc.

 

With that said, there are always going to be a few questions that can cause you to stumble. I’ve coached thousands of candidates in the past, so let me help you run through the 3 most annoying questions and how best to answer them.

1. What Is Your Biggest Weakness?

This might seem like a trick question at first. But answering it truthfully and with self-awareness can actually gain you some bonus points and eventually that nod in approval for the next round. Because let’s face it — nobody’s perfect. Even your potential boss has their own set of weaknesses.

The biggest takeaway here is to not try to force your “weakness” to look like a strength. The old lines of “I am a perfectionist” or “I am too obsessed with the details,” can actually bite you on the other end and come off as a red flag. They might also sound scripted or insincere, which is the last thing you want to do to impress a future employer.

You are better off giving an honest answer that shows you are self-aware and working on making improvements. Some examples include things like getting the jitters before a big presentation or having limited knowledge of working with a specific tool. Some may also say they take too long to adapt to a change in environment, or a difficulty managing their expectations of their manager.

The golden rule to all of this is to turn the tables to how you are working on improving it. You can say things such as you are working on your stage fright by attending weekly meetings at a local Toastmaster, taking a mental break when you’re overwhelmed, or blocking off time to learn a new tool to help you at work. It’s normal to have weaknesses, but what sets the winners apart is how they embrace their weaknesses and look forward to getting better.

2. Why Did You Leave Your Last Role?

There are a variety of reasons why people leave their jobs. There are some good ones and some not-so-good ones. When you encounter a question about why you’re switching from one job to another (see, that’s why you’re applying!), you must avoid badmouthing your former or current employer at all costs.

You see, this is not about them. The interview concerns you and your potential new job. Whatever you might have experienced with your past employer will most likely be of no concern to your future boss. Furthermore, talking more about your strengths and evolving interests will be more relevant in answering this question.

All companies would prefer hiring a dreamer who innovates and expands their horizons. So you could say that you’re leaving your former job to find some more room for growth and development. Here’s a sample answer that may help:

“I have had some great experiences in my career and, at this point, am really looking to take my skills in Data Analytics to the next level.

I learned a ton from my last manager but felt that I hit a plateau with my development after spending the last 3 years there. This role popped up on my LinkedIn feed, and it just seems like an incredible opportunity to learn from experts in this field. Really excited to learn more today.”

In the end, it is important to recognize that your former employer contributed considerably to your professional growth, but all things, even the good ones, reach their end. And by that time, it’s time to start a new journey.

3. What Is Your Current Salary (And Expectations)?

It’s not always about the money, but of course, it matters. Usually, towards the end of the interview, your interviewer will ask you what your current salary is and your expectations. Before you say anything, take a pause and aim to make this a conversation, not a confrontation.

The best case scenario is that you follow up and ask them first what their budget is for this specific role, and they give you a range. And from there, you can give them feedback if it’s aligned with what you are looking for.

It doesn’t always work this way, though, and they may expect you to be the one that gives the first number out. If that’s the case, do your part to stay calm and work with them, not against them. Let them know you are happy to discuss salary and expectations after you know more about the role and after both sides agree that it may be a good fit.

This is also where your research comes in handy, so you know what other companies are paying for similar roles in this industry. Knowing your market value can give you a good feel for how to negotiate your salary moving forward. Some of the best resources out there to check salary information are Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and Salary.com.

And remember that our goal here is never to lie! Being truthful and sincere about what you know, and don’t know will always work out for you in the long run. Knowing who you are, and all the value you bring to the table will ultimately guide you towards your ideal career path. You Want To Be A Problem Solver

The goal is to help improve the work-life of your new boss. Before launching into your elevator pitch, ask the hiring manager, interviewers, human resources personnel and others involved with the interview process questions, such as, “With all the applicants for this role, why did you select me for an interview?”

The rationale behind this question is to elicit a response from the hiring manager to discuss in detail why they selected you and what they need help with. The interviewer will look for reasons why you were chosen. They’ll articulate all the positive things you have that are critical to the job.

The follow-up question should be, “What are the top pressure points I can help you with?” The interviewer will lay out all the problems that must be addressed by asking this seemingly innocuous question. With a little probing, you’ll learn about an array of issues weighing them down and needing to be immediately fixed.

Armed with these insights, you can then specifically tailor your pitch. Since you now have a good grasp of what is mission-critical to succeeding in the role, you can clearly and concisely share how your skills, responsibilities and talents are perfectly aligned with tackling the pain points.

Likability Counts

Throughout the interview process, you want to come across as friendly, helpful, a team player and someone who will add value to the team and company. Let them know that you appreciate the opportunity and will do everything within your power to help make a positive impact, while also being easy to work with.

Most interviewees believe having an Ivy-League pedigree or coming from a marquee brand company is sufficient to get the job offer. Certainly, having a top academic background and working at premiere companies help. However, the manager is only human and wants someone easy to get along with.

The new employee could become a liability if they hire a rockstar jerk. The person could be pompous, arrogant and rub co-workers the wrong way. This will impact the boss. Senior-level managers and staff will question the manager’s hiring decisions and blame the person for making a mistake in bringing this person aboard.

Now Is Not The Time To Play Games

There’s no reason to play “hard to get.” The job market for college-educated office workers is too intense for playing games. Since many candidates will be competing against you, stand out by letting the supervisor, hiring manager and human resources professional know that you want the job. Explicitly tell them, “I love the opportunity and enjoyed meeting with everyone. I’m all-in with your corporate mission and would love to accept the job, if it is offered to me.”

Don’t Forget The Niceties

One of the best ways to stand out is to be friendly, polite and accommodating. Set up convenient interview times for the hiring personnel, and thank them for the invitation to interview. Thoroughly research the company, the job description, its people, management, finances, products and services and reputation relative to competitors. The goal is to arrive at the interview with a lot of knowledge about the organization, which everyone will notice and respect you for it.

What To Do At The End Of The Interview

As the interview winds down, ask the hiring manager, “Is there anything else that you’d like to know about me? Am I the right fit for the role?”

The first inquiry can flesh out any lingering questions the interviewer has or forgot to ask. You can also tell by the tone of the person’s response how well you did. If the answer is short and curt, it’s not a good sign. The latter inquiry will draw out the real thoughts of the manager, as they’re put on the spot.

It’s a bold call to make this ask.The interviewer could say, “You are great for the job. We’ll have you back for a follow-up interview.” If the person is hesitant or offers reasons why you may not be selected to move forward, it gives you one last chance to address the concerns and launch into one last pitch, extolling all the reasons why you’re right for the role and will add value, if hired.

It will be harder to get a new job. Record-high inflation, interest rates and costs, a likely recession and other economic and geopolitical matters led many companies to lay off workers, enact hiring freezes and rescind job offers. In this environment, pace yourself, as you might be in for a drawn-out interview process. Hiring, for many businesses, will seem like a luxury.

This mindset will make human resources and hiring managers closely scrutinize each candidate and hold them up to the highest standards. You will need to prepare for tough questions designed to weed out people. Here are a few questions HR loves to ask and how to effectively answer them to help get you through the hiring process with flying colors.

Show Your Genuine And Authentic Self

A hiring manager wants someone who they like. This runs contrary to what everyone has told you in the past. It’s essential to have all the right skills and background required in the job description; however, it’s all for naught if the interviewer doesn’t warm up to you and can’t envision working with you every day. Establishing a great first impression is the key to winning over an interviewer. You want to exude confidence, enthusiasm, motivation and humility.

This sounds trite, but be yourself. Most job applicants put on a serious demeanor and answer questions robotically, trying to sound professional. They are stiff, conservative and lack any display of humanity. It’s a big mistake. Don’t change your personality because that’s what you think the manager wants.

Let the hiring manager see the real you. The secret to interviewing is that the supervisor wants a person who can do the job, be easy to work with, can form a mutually beneficial relationship and enjoy each other’s company.

The ‘Could You Please Tell Me About Yourself?’ Question

Immediately, the interviewee starts talking about delivering newspapers as a kid, referencing some after-school jobs and meanders around talking about personal matters. That is the worst thing to do. The interviewer simply wants to find out about your relevant work experience. The cliché question is not well-structured.

The interviewer wants to be sold on how you can help them. They want an answer that makes them feel you have the right skills, talent, background, credentials and interpersonal and social skills to succeed in the position.

Consider the question: “Please tell me about your post-college work experiences, how it relates to the role and why you will succeed.” With this in mind, start with sharing your current job, responsibilities, daily tasks and share some examples of how you made an impact and added value. This is what they really want to know.

‘What Made You Want To Apply For This Specific Role?’ Question

Let’s be honest. Most job seekers have a “spray and pray” approach to their job search. They fire off résumés to hundreds of job listings, hoping that a few will stick. Human resources and experienced hiring managers are aware of this. Their antenna is raised to detect those who truly want to work for their company and have an affinity for the job at hand. They are not too happy about applicants who just want a job or are solely desirous of having a marquee brand-name company on their résumé.

The question is designed to flesh out the interviewee’s real reasons for applying to the job. We all know that sometimes people desperately need a job and are at the point that they’d accept anything to either get back into the job market, if they’re unemployed, or find a new role, if they hate where they are now and are feeling burned out.

When the job market tightens, getting approval to hire someone is not easy. Usually, there will be a need to get sign-offs from a number of higher-level executives who carefully scrutinize each headcount addition. In light of this scenario, you need to sell yourself as someone who loves the job and holds all the right criteria to do well at the new organization.

Revert to your elevator pitch. If you are unfamiliar with this concept, it’s derived from having the ability to pitch an idea or project to a person in the short time frame of riding together in an elevator for only a couple of minutes. If you haven’t practiced an elevator pitch, here’s what you need to do to address the question.

Provide a 30-second to roughly one-minute pitch of why you are perfect for the position. Presumably, you’ve already read the job listing and are aware of all the requirements. Offer your on-target skills, work history, responsibilities and other factors that address the job description’s demands. Hopefully, you’ve done due diligence on the firm, so you can add targeted reasons, in addition to your on-point background, why you are also attracted to the company and how your skills and interests are perfectly aligned with its corporate mission.

‘Do You Have Any Questions?’

This easy-sounding question gives job hunters a hard time. The question is typically standard in the hiring process. The interviewer is asking it to be polite and wants to ensure that you fully understand the role, its requirements and what to expect if the company decides to move forward with you.

Since most job seekers know this question will inevitably come up at the end of the conversation, they obsess about it throughout the entire interview. The candidate becomes more preoccupied with what to ask at the end of the meeting than being present in the moment and actively listening to the interviewer.

Here is an easy solution. Think of how you hold a conversation with family and friends. You don’t wait until the end to say something. You interject when you feel it’s appropriate. Don’t worry about waiting until the end of the discussion to ask your questions. Throughout the meeting, pose questions when you genuinely want to probe and learn more about what the just interviewer said.

The interviewer will appreciate that you are making inquiries. They’ll feel you are interested and desirous of learning more. By interjecting with questions, the hiring manager will gain a better sense of you as a person. What’s likely to happen is that the interview process will change from a robotic, question-and-answer format to a lively back-and-forth discussion, in which both parties will learn more about each other and start bonding.

At the end of the meeting, you no longer need to stress out. Feeling comfortable having engaged in a pleasant discussion, you could say, “Thank you! I appreciate all of your insights. You’ve done a great job addressing all my questions and concerns.” If unresolved issues are left, you can add, “I appreciated our conversation. I’m very excited about the opportunity. You’ve been so great in detailing what to expect if selected for the position. I just have one other question. Could you please elaborate on X? I’d really like to gain a better understanding of it.”

Uncomfortable Questions You Should Ask

In an environment characterized by layoffs and hiring freezes, it’s reasonable to feel concerned about switching jobs. You don’t want to be the person who is the last one hired and first one fired when things go awry. To protect yourself, while it will be awkward, you must ask tough questions of the interviewer and everyone else who is involved with the hiring process.

It’s only fair for you to dig into the organization’s financial situation. Does the company have plans for layoffs that were not yet publicly announced? Could the firm offer a contract that guarantees that you won’t be terminated, except if there is a transgression or violation of company rules?

You want to gain the temperature of the company. Is everyone feeling overworked and overwhelmed? It’s only fair to inquire about the safety of your base salary, bonus and stock options. The same holds true for the work style. You don’t want to accept a role only later to find out that the company is canceling the remote work option you signed up for, or enacting salary cuts and slashing bonuses and other benefits.

With tons of job interview advice out there on how to best prepare for an interview, it’s easy to think that simply practicing your responses in front of a mirror ahead of the interview will help you land the job.

Yet, as a career coach who helps corporate high-achievers go from overlooked to hired and who has also interviewed and hired for multiple job openings, I’ve seen firsthand how small, seemingly harmless interview mistakes can lead to unexpected rejection.

Here are a few of those subtle interview mistakes that might be costing you the job:

You’re showing interest in the company, but not the role.

Usually, candidates fall into this interview mistake when they just want to get their foot in the door or when they apply for open positions simply because they’ll do anything to work at the company that is hiring. While it’s flattering and may help you move through several rounds of interviews, it isn’t always enough to land the role.

Companies don’t want to hire fans. They want to hire problem solvers. So, if you’re not able to speak to the role and how you can clearly execute the responsibilities for that specific position, then you’ll likely get passed over for someone else who successfully conveyed this.

You’re oversharing irrelevant details.

It might be tempting to talk about the first job you had 10 years ago that you loved, the side-hustle you’re proud of, or the major accomplishment you consider to be the highlight of your career. But, if relaying that information does not add to why you’re a role fit or culture fit, then it’s more than likely a distraction.

Oversharing irrelevant details forces the interviewer to have to figure out for themselves why what you’re saying matters. However, whenever you put the interviewer in charge of piecing together your story, they’ll typically guess wrong or give up and pick someone else who didn’t make them guess.

You lack enthusiasm when responding to questions.

No doubt everyone has different personalities, and this isn’t to say that you have to be someone you’re not to land a new role. With that said, if you’re extremely short when answering questions or respond in a monotone voice, it might cause the interviewer to question if you’re truly interested in the opportunity.

Think of it like dating. If you’re on a date and the person doesn’t know how to hold a conversation or doesn’t seem curious or engaged, then you’ll likely assume that they’re not that interested and move on. The same goes for job interviews. Even if you’re qualified with more than enough experience to excel in the role, a lack of enthusiasm can still influence a company to choose another candidate. Sometimes they might even choose one with less experience than you because they might assume the other candidate will be a better long-term fit.

You’re not asking questions during the interview.

Occasionally, you can get so caught up with making sure your answers are perfect that you can forget to prepare your own set of questions to ask in an interview. While it’s an honest mistake, you miss out on an opportunity to drive home that you’re invested in the opportunity.

This mistake can also occur when candidates get too comfortable as they move higher in the interview process. After several interviews, it can be easy to think that there’s no need to keep asking new questions. But, consistently showing up confident, curious and engaged can leave a lasting impression that tips the scale in your favor.

If you’re guilty of making any of these mistakes, first commit to only applying for roles you’re genuinely interested in pursuing. It’ll make it easier for you to show up enthusiastically in interviews without having to fake it or force it. Next, don’t just spend all your time practicing the perfect responses ahead of your interviews. Take time to understand the role. Get clear on your story and why your background and experience aligns well with the role and company, and prepare insightful questions. Taking these additional steps to gain more clarity and confidence in your skills and the role will boost your chances of standing out from other candidates and landing the job offer.

#JobSearch : To Avoid Regretting A New Job, Ask These Two Questions During The Interview. Got Interview? MUst REad!

It’s rare to find a recruiter or hiring manager that will disclose the unvarnished truth about what it’s really like to work at their company. Especially in tight labor markets, they’ll paint the rosiest picture possible to persuade you to join their team. But you need to be choosy and push for a peek behind the curtain to see what it’s actually like to work there.

That’s why you need to ask these two revealing questions:

  1. Could you tell me about a time when one of your employees had a great idea that improved the business?
  2. Could you tell me about a specific frustration experienced by one or more of your employees?

 

Let’s look at the logic and science behind each question.

The first question matters because the study The State Of Leadership Development revealed that only 27% of employees say their leader always encourages and recognizes suggestions for improvement.

If your future manager can’t give you a specific example of an employee having a great idea that improved the business, that tells you that either the manager doesn’t encourage new ideas or they don’t implement them. Either case is equally bad and should be a giant warning sign that you’re likely to be frustrated in your job (assuming you’re someone who generates good ideas).

Also, be wary of answers like, “Gosh, I really can’t give any specifics because the people here are always coming up with great ideas.” Generic and unspecific answers are just as bad as non-answers. If a manager is truly soliciting and implementing their employees’ ideas, they won’t have any difficulty finding specific examples. In fact, not only will they have examples at their fingertips, they should be eager to tell you all about the smart and creative people on the team.

There are also cases, although less common, where the manager does, in fact, implement their employees’ great ideas but selfishly takes the credit for themselves. But it doesn’t really matter why the manager won’t tell you specific examples; all of the possible reasons are bad.

The second question matters because the Frustration At Work study discovered that around 60% of employees say their frustrations at work are so severe that they want to look for other jobs.

There is no workplace on earth where employees don’t experience frustrations. But there are plenty of companies where managers don’t listen to, or fix, those frustrations. This question provides a simple test of your future manager’s candor, transparency and willingness to hear hard truths.

If the manager can’t or won’t disclose any of the frustrations their employees undoubtedly experience, it’s likely that they won’t take meaningful steps to alleviate your frustrations once you’ve taken the job.

These two recommended questions are mild enough that a good manager should have little trouble giving you detailed answers, and that’s the point. Your goal in the interview is to quickly and efficiently discover whether your future boss is a decent leader and someone for whom you could work. There are dozens of other issues that will affect whether you accept the job, like compensation, location, hours, titles, benefits and more.

But unlike the quality of management, those issues tend to be more transparently communicated upfront. Clarify them all, of course, but the manager issues will require a bit more explicit probing with the two questions.

This is the first question in any interview, where the applicant has the opportunity to brand themselves, deliver skill sets and achievements and create an agenda of points they can refer back to throughout the interview. Most job applicants fail to take advantage of this perfect opportunity to make a great first impression. Out of nervousness, they may talk excessively and reveal personal information, which can be damaging.

Interviews are performances and performances must be practiced. You are being judged the minute you open your mouth. Like it or not, you are performing – so know your audience. Be sure to address their needs, find their pain and show them how you can solve their problems. Everything that you share should be relevant to the job and the company.

When one of our clients delivers their TMAY, the interviewer’s jaw usually drops. That’s a good thing. The interviewer is delighted to hear a structured statement that is personalized to the company and the position. The applicant has immediately established a rapport and created an agenda of what they will discuss throughout the interview. They have taken control in the first minute of conversation. They can now expand on the skills and talents that they advertised in their opening statement and can easily refer back to the accomplishments that they strategically inserted in their TMAY.

We put our clients through a process that starts with a formal script. The content is structured and organized and includes a power close. It is important to have a definitive close – wrap up the TMAY with what you can offer the organization:

 “With my PMP certification, expertise in lean manufacturing, and application of Six Sigma principles, I will increase productivity and profits for a progressive organization.”

 

We then have the client read the script word for word. They sound scripted, awkward and over-rehearsed – but they are familiarizing themselves with the structured beginning (branding statement), middle (their accomplishments), and end (a power close), which were all customized for the job opportunity.

 

We now discuss their performance. Did she remember her Three Es? Energy – Enthusiasm and … Energy?  Was she confident and believable? How was her pacing and enunciation? Was her energy consistent from beginning to end?

 

The client then reduces the script to four bullet points:

  • Opening (branding statement)
  • What they do

  • How they do it

  • Power Close

We then turn the script over, and the client presents their opening statement from the bullet points. This allows them to speak naturally, use their personality, and powerfully close their statement in under one minute. It’s amazing to watch this transformation. The client speaks with confidence, maintains eye contact, and delivers the message with clarity and conviction.

Few job applicants open with clear and concise statements. When you are preparing for the interview and organizing your thoughts for your TMAY, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. How am I branding myself for this position?
  2. What are the key components they are seeking for the perfect applicant?
  3. How can I close by showing them that I am qualified to fill this position?

If you know yourself as a professional and know how you can successfully accomplish the company’s goals and objectives, you can deliver your TMAY credibly, anytime, anywhere.

You’ve finally landed an interview for your dream job. It’s Thursday at 9PM, and in 12 hours, you’ll be talking to the hiring manager.  But right now, you’re stuck nervously refreshing the “Mission” page on the company website.  How can you prepare yourself?

Well, to start with, give yourself a major “congratulations.“  You’ve already done better than 80% of candidates by landing an interview.  Remind yourself that you were chosen because you stood out from the rest and you are qualified.

Think hard on all the things that make you qualified for the position, and the skill you would bring to the role. And most importantly, keep your mindset positive by remembering to really believe in what you’re capable of. You don’t always need experience in an exact arena to be skillful in the work you do. In fact, there is a scientific basis to the strength of positive affirmations, a tool you can use to get yourself inspired.  What’s more is that confidence is integral to nailing an interview, given that 40% of hiring professionals say that overall confidence influences a candidate’s chances of getting hired.

So now that you’ve talked yourself up to yourself, how do you get ready to do the same in front of an interviewer? You never know when you’ll be thrown an interrogative curveball, but there are some likely questions you can definitely expect and be prepared for.

1) “Tell me a little about yourself”

What might seem like an innocuous question is actually a very important one. Interviewers often see this as a “warm up” question, and what’s more, it’s often an opening for more in-depth conversation.

In my experience as a career coach, I’ve developed a 4-part formula for acing this question.  Here goes:

  1. Your story:  How you tell your story will show the interviewer that you’re not just applying to jobs at random and counting your blessings that you got an interview.  This is your chance to show them that they are dealing with someone with drive and direction.  In telling your story, you should focus on the why that put you in that interview room, and give a compelling narrative trajectory to your career history.  Focus on a story from childhood or a meaningful moment of clarity that helped stir in you the drive to follow your particular career path.
  2. The “cuff:”  I call this one the cuff, because you want it to come across as “off the cuff.”  That is, you want it to be short and sweet.  This is your chance to address anything you might feel less than confident about on your resumé or application.  Maybe you have a gap in your work history, or you left a job shortly after starting it. Recruiters usually pick up on these things, however, they may not give you another chance to address it in the interview. In speaking directly to a potential flaw or shortcoming that may otherwise be unaddressed, you come across as self-aware and proactive.  Make sure to weave this in in a way that fits in with the overall narrative of your career.
  3. Your “golden skill:”  Employers aren’t swayed by a candidate who over-emphasizes skills across the board.  Instead, focus on a skill that relates closely to the job to which you are applying, and present it in a testimonial fashion. Remember, a “humble brag” plays better here than cockiness. In a study of HR professionals, 72% rated “over-confidence” as “the biggest personality turnoff.” An anecdote about how feedback from someone else helped you realize your strength in a certain area and how this impacted your career goals should do the trick.
  4. Your goal:  This is how you tie a bow around a great story of your personal career trajectory. Think about what you are passionate about within your field and where you would like to see this passion take your career.  Bring this goal around to the mission of the company to which you are applying. Hiring managers want candidates who they are confident will commit long term. By framing your career goals as aligned with the company’s mission, you’ll instill confidence in the interviewer that you’ll be a good hire who sticks around.

This may seem like a lot, but think of it as your “elevator pitch,” a concise and confident sales pitch of yourself as a strong candidate. Write a script out, and practice it until it feels natural.

2) What is your biggest weakness?

This is an opportunity to be truthful and candid, and show that you are self-reflective about your personality and your work performance. Self-awareness is one of the most crucial soft skills in the workplace, and also one that’s in short supply: while 95% of people think that they’re self aware, research indicates only 10–15% actually are. Use this question as an opportunity to show that you’re one of the rare one in ten.

Before we get into what you should say, here’s what not to say:

  • “I’m a perfectionist”—they’ve heard that one before.
  • “I’m a workaholic”—they know this is a way for you to dodge the question.
  • “I take work home with me” — this shows that you struggle with time management.
  • “I’m a people pleaser”—this is your way of telling them you’ll always say “yes,” and it’s not enough of a weakness to make them feel like you’re being vulnerable.

Answering this question well is a balancing act: you want to emphasize something that isn’t a major character flaw or weakness. You also don’t want your answer to read as if you are avoiding the question or that you are unwilling to admit that you have room for growth and improvement.

Prepare for this question by considering the most important qualities of the job to which you are applying and what “flaws” might actually be assets in the role. Are they seeking a collaborator or a self-starter? A leader? Or someone who is good at following direction?

Seems like a tightrope walk? Not all of these ideas will land for every role, but try some on for size and see if you can fit any into your narrative.

  • I lead with emotion, and prefer to trust instincts.
  • I work best on my own, and I’m stronger at hitting goals without excessive guidance.
  • I work better in a team/group environment, and need the collaboration of others to execute a vision.
  • I tend to be better at thinking big picture, and prefer to delegate details to others.
  • I’m best at focusing on small details, and rely on the help of collaborators to see the big picture.

If you’re clear on what your weakness is and you need help explaining it, here’s a five step formula I tell my clients to use for this question, all the time:

  1. Pick a weakness you’ve been working on.  You want to be able to show progress in this narrative of your weaknesses.
  2. Acknowledge how it has been a challenge in the past.  Showing the interviewer that you are aware of how this limitation has affected you in the past will show self-reflection and self-awareness.
  3. Show steps you are taking toward working on.  Give concrete examples of how you are taking on your limitations or weakness head on.
  4. Show how you are making progress. Explain how you have noticed progress in yourself in overcoming your weakness.
  5. Emphasize that you’ve been acknowledged for your progress.  Round out your explanation of this weakness with an anecdote about how colleagues or bosses have noticed the progress you have made.

3) Why Are You The Best Person For This Job?

The truth is, you don’t know if you are. But you have to believe you are. Remember all that stuff about positive affirmations and confidence?

One way I love to start answering this question is by saying, “here’s what you won’t find about me on my resume…” and from there, share about a soft skill that is important to the job. Here are a few statements/skills to consider:

  • “I execute and don’t require much follow up.”
  • “I am good at anticipating issues and getting ahead of them.”
  • “My superpower is handling an upset customer with ease.”

Once you make a statement like this, back it up with a quick 30 second story that shows them, and doesn’t just tell them, you have an ability. An anecdote like this will give them insight into who you are and how you show up at work. A story like this goes well beyond a warm conversation and a short gander at your resume to paint a picture of who you are. That is everything.

Additionally, this question is really an opportunity to show that you’ve done your homework when it comes to the company. Think back to the cover letter you sent when you applied. Answering this question is a lot like writing a great cover letter: you have to tie your skills and experience directly to the role that you’re interviewing for. Before you walk into the interview, take a look at your resume and write down, for each job, what your biggest accomplishment was and how the skills you used for it in the past relate to the job you want. Knowing this before you walk through the door can help you add a lot of value in this conversation.

Learn as much as you can about the position, as well as the company as a whole and the work culture there. If you can use your network to connect with someone at the company who can give you an insider look at the things, all the better.

Beyond showing that you have the necessary experience and skills to fulfill the responsibilities of the role, your answer to this question gives you a chance to show that you are a good “culture fit.” Finding candidates who fit into the “work culture” is more important than ever.

According to a study by Millennial Branding, 43% of HR pros say that being a good culture fit is the most important quality a candidate can demonstrate.  Company culture isn’t just about the good water cooler banter: 90% of North American CEO and CFOs believe the the quality of a company culture is closely tied to its financial success and its reputation and perception by the public.

Most people will be trying to show that they can perform the specific responsibilities of the job. Indicating that you are factoring in work culture will give you a leg up.

4) How do you deal with conflict in the workplace?

This question is a great way to emphasize that you have strong emotional intelligence , which hiring managers view emotional intelligence as a crucial soft skill. In fact, 71% of hiring managers say they’d prefer a candidate with strong emotional intelligence over a high IQ, and 59% said that they would even pass on a candidate with a high IQ but low emotional intelligence.

By demonstrating your capacity for empathy, and your understanding of dealing with different personality types, you will show that you’re highly emotionally intelligent.

Remember, the last thing you want to do in an interview is express any negativity.  So it’s important when answering the question to tread lightly in how you portray conflict you may have had with co-workers in the past.  You don’t want to make a point about how difficult or obstructive a certain colleague may have been.  Instead, say you noticed that there were certain dynamics that were holding back the team from progress, and you took steps to address them with proactive communication and dialogue.

The interviewer may ask the questions in a way that solicits a more situational answer, such as “tell me about a time you dealt with a conflict at work.” Here’s a formula that I have found successful for answering this questions in a way that paints you in the best possible light.

“I was working with a certain individual, and I noticed that they would often (insert a problem behavior, such as ‘resist taking on more work’) when x situation would arise.  I felt that this was holding back the team from meeting our goals.  I took the opportunity to address this in a careful, one-on-one conversation with my colleague directly, and found that having a frank conversation in private was effective in conveying my concerns.  I learned from this conversation (insert insight about conflict strategies,) so I’m grateful to have had it. After we talked, I found that we were all more on track to meet the team’s goals.”

Emphasizing the companies mission and team’s goal rather than focusing on the shortcoming of past co-workers will show that you results-oriented, and you can see beyond interpersonal dynamics and focus on the greater good of the work.

If you’re someone who is conflict averse, or you’re not confident you have good conflict-resolution skills, here’s a crash course on some communication strategies. These practices will make you confident that you’ll be able to follow through on your promise to be an A+ communicator:

  • Lead with compassion and empathy. Show that you try to understand where someone else is coming from, or why something may make them feel a certain way.
  • “I statements” rather than “you statements.” This helps you focus on your own subjective experience, rather than pointing out flaws in others.
  • Replace “but” with “and.” This seems basic, but it’s an easy fix that can quickly deescalate a conversation from an argument to a discussion.
  • Ask yourself, “Am I listening, or just waiting to talk?” We learned how to take turns in kindergarten, but that doesn’t mean we always remember to apply the principle in conversation

5) Where do you see yourself in five years?

Please, please, don’t say “in your job.”

Like the “a little about yourself” question, this is an opening to show that you have confidence and drive in your career trajectory.  You want to show that you are consistent in your goals and that you’re committed to the hard work and follow-through required for the job. This is also a chance to show that you are confident that you will perform at a level that will allow you to continue to ascend.

Here are three things companies want to hear in your answer to this question:

  • A desire to grow with the company.
  • A desire to be challenged within the company
  • An alignment with your wants and the companies needs

A great answer would emphasize that the opportunity to grow within the company would be aligned with your long term goals for your career, and that you would also be grateful for the opportunity to help others grow and contribute to the common goals of the company.

6) What can we expect from you in your first 90 days?

This is one more chance to show that you’ve done your research. The best way to answer this is to start with some specifics.  Make it clear that you not only understand the responsibilities of the position, but also that you’re thinking ahead to what the short-term and long-term goals for that role might look like.

Here are some specific ideas of how you might spend your first three months that will show that you’ve considered how you would integrate into the company:

  • Meet with managers to discuss the specifics of short-term and long-term goals, and what goals would be extraordinary if you met them.
  • Map out and prioritizing goals that will “move the needle,” and contribute most meaningfully to the company.
  • Make time to be an observer, and learning as much as you can about the company culture and different facets of the business.
  • Connect one-on-one with new co-workers.

Another strong answer for this question could start with researching what’s working for the company’s competitors, and offering some creative solutions that you’d love to take initiative on if they hired you. By sharing with them your vision for what’s possible with you on their team, you’re making the job offer a no brainer!

7) Do you have any questions for me?

The answer to this one is simple: “yes.”

That is to say, you want to make sure that you are prepared with just a few questions of your own— not too many, but a few. This will likely be the last question, and therefore the last opportunity you have to show them that you are prepared and enthusiastic, and that you’ve considered your place in the company culture, not just your tasks in the specific position. It also might be the last chance you have to gather info that may be crucial if you are given an offer.

Here are a few directions you might take it:

  • What would success ideally look like from me, if I was in this role?
  • If I did an extraordinary job in this role, what goals would I reach in 6–12 months?
  • What’s a typical day possibly look like in this role?
  • When are you looking for someone to start?
  • I was very excited to read about X Initiative, could you tell me more about that?
  • I noticed a lot of emphasis placed on company work culture, could you tell me about your experience of the culture here?
  • What’s your favorite part about working at X Corp?
  • Do you have a certain story or memory that speaks to your experience of working here?

Every interview will be different, and you may hear all or none of these questions.  But it’s likely that an interviewer will touch on some of these subjects, and preparing to address the ideas that arise from these common questions will help you put your best foot forward in an interview.

Try to remember that, at its most basic, an interview is just a conversation. Stay confident and don’t forget that it’s a two-way street. They want you as badly as you want them!

It was the middle of July 2008, and I had just bought an expensive power suit for a job interview. After being laid off during the height of the recession and unemployed for about six weeks, I was feeling desperate and willing to spend money on anything that might put my career on track.

Surprisingly, the train was running on time that day, which gave me the opportunity to take my new jacket off, sit back, and prepare for this meeting one last time. At my stop, I realized I was so intently focused that I didn’t notice a robbery happening right under my nose. The jacket was gone.

With nothing but an inappropriate tank top on, I was mortified but decided to go for it anyway. I proceeded to meet all of the organization’s department heads, during which time my thoughts repeatedly returned to my improper attire. But believe it or not, I ended up getting the job.

Even though my story had a happy ending, there’s no doubt the pressures of the interview process had me unnerved. Anything can happen before or during an interview, which is why it’s crucial to walk in feeling prepared — even if your jacket has just been stolen.

Interviewers will be focused on finding out if you’re a right fit for the position, but it’s also important to decide if the company is a right fit for you. Have a list of questions ready to help you through your next interview:

Your role

Be careful not to ask questions already answered in the job description. It’s important go beyond those general duties to understand everything the job entails.

1. Can you offer specific details about the position’s day-to-day responsibilities?

2. What would my first week at work look like?

3. How does this position contribute to the organization’s success?

4. What do you hope I will accomplish in this position?

5. How does the company culture affect this role?

6. What job shadowing opportunities are available for an applicant before they accept an offer?

Proceed with caution: If rather than going into detail about the primary responsibilities listed in the job description, the employer rambles off many more duties — they may be asking you to take on more than you initially thought.

Proceed with caution: Employers who can’t list how they encourage employees and set them up for success may not deliver the support you’re looking for in a company.

From benefits and perks to the ways employees interact with each other, not meshing with a company’s culture can put a roadblock on your path to success.

20. What benefits are focused on work-life balance?

21. What benefits and perks does the company offer?

22. What is the outline of your telecommuting policy?

23. How frequently do employees make themselves available outside of normal working hours?

Proceed with caution: Listen closely to how the interviewer describes the company’s benefits and environment to be sure it’s the right culture for your personality and working style.

What Aspects of Company Culture Matter Most for Your Next Job

Company reputation

After doing some research, you should already know a few things about the company’s reputation. Now it’s time to dig a little deeper to make sure this is a place where you’ll thrive.

24. What’s your mission statement?

25. How often is a new hire the result of a previous employee quitting?

26. Why do most employees leave the company?

27. How would employees describe the company and its leaders?

28. What are the company’s biggest problems? How are they overcoming them?

29. What do you want the company to be known for among employees — past, present, and future?

Proceed with caution: Quality leaders will be the first to admit that their company isn’t perfect. Interviewers who claim they would change nothing might be failing to grow and make positive changes.

Performance measurements

Knowing a company’s expectations and how they measure goals before accepting a job offer helps you decide if their style matches with what motivates you.

30. How are employees recognized for their hard work?

31. How involved are employees in the structuring of their own goals and tasks?

32. What are your views on goals, timelines, and measuring success?

33. How often are employees expected to provide status updates on a project?

Proceed with caution: Wanting constant updates and control over employee tasks are warning signs of a micromanager.

The employees at this organization could be your next team. Make sure you’re positive this is a group you want to be a part of.

35. Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with?

Proceed with caution: A competitive environment can be fun and motivating, but a lack of teamwork in the office could point to a cutthroat company.

Opportunities for growth

What is your ultimate career goal? Set yourself up for success by finding out how far this new position could take you on your career path.

38. What type of mentor system do you have in place?

39. What type of educational/training opportunities does the company offer?  

40. What advancement opportunities are available?

41. How do leaders promote employee growth and success?

42. What does it take to be a top performer at this company?

Proceed with caution: If an interviewer is unable to share how you can advance within the company, chances are you might not be able to grow at the rate you want.

Moving forward

Don’t leave the interview with any questions unanswered — for you or the interviewer. This is your final opportunity to make sure you’re both on the same page before you walk out the door.

Proceed with caution: Interviewers who don’t have a lot to offer on next steps may already have another candidate in mind or might not be in a big rush to hire. Remember to stay positive and continue to job search until you’re officially hired.

#JobInterview : 3 Sabotaging Mistakes You’re Probably Making In Your Job Interviews

Let’s be real... With all the resume updates, networking events and hours you could spend submitting job applications, the job hunt can be brutal.  

By the time you finally get asked to come in for an interview, you’re not only tired, but also your nerves have taken hold of you, and you’re sweating through your blazer in the lobby.

As a career coach, many clients have come to me for help after doing all the leg work to land interviews, only to walk into the room and unknowingly drop the ball.

Here’s the thing... Acing an interview largely comes down to having emotional intelligence, as well as recognizing how you may be deterring the interviewer from hiring you.

Through the years I’ve spent coaching clients from all walks of the workforce, I have found these three common interview mistakes to be the reason for not getting hired.

1. Telling them everything.

Many interviews start off with the really open-ended question, “tell me about yourself”.  For most people, this leads down a rabbit hole of accidentally spewing your entire life history to a complete stranger or, even worse, simply regurgitating everything they could read at a glance of your resume. Or, they ask you about a questionable career shift or a gap in your resume, which prompts you to reveal your personal struggles or a story about the boss who fired you.

No matter how much of a connection you have with your interviewer, remember that oversharing that early will come across as unprofessional— and untrustworthy… even if the conversation is enjoyable in the moment.

It’s not about lying, but it is about learning where you can walk the line of perhaps addressing a concern about your application versus shining a giant spotlight directly onto your weakness. The best way to do this is to intentionally prepare your interview answers in advance to questions that you foresee in an interview. Practice breeds certainty and certainty breeds confidence, so be sure to practice and rehearse your answers. This means looking in the mirror, and practicing, or asking someone to sit down and host a mock interview with you as practice.

You’ve heard the saying, “practice makes perfect.”Well, there’s a reason for that. Your brain has a substance called myelin that coats axons, the nerve fibers that cause motion in your body. When you repeat a motion, you are building up this myelin in your brain. As a result, your brain functions faster with improved recall, communication, and responses. All to aid you in the interview process and keep you away from oversharing.

We live in a world where musicians have dress rehearsals, and actors shoot the same scene multiple times. Who are you to think that you shouldn’t also be practicing for your interview performances?

2. Being cold or negative.

An interview is a high-stakes experience that leads to being nervous and anxious. What most people don’t realize, is that anxiety can often be expressed as anger or negativity.

A Negative Nelly is the last person a company wants to hire.

Sometimes, the attempt to be professional appears cold, and it makes sense that mastering this state of being is challenging. After all, you may be serious about the position for which you’re interviewing!  Don’t let your focus come across as cold. Remember to tune into your inner human that knows how to bond and connect with another. After all, the interview got you in the room, your personality, and being someone the interviewer sees themself happily connecting with each day is what the interview conversation really become about.

Always remember, what you say about others says a lot about you. It might be tempting to talk smack about an old boss or employer when answering an interview question, but it will only make you look bad. Studies have revealed that negative perceptions of others are linked to higher levels of narcissism and antisocial behavior, all of which the interviewer may consciously or subconsciously pick up on.

People can intuitively tune into each other’s emotions, so if you are speaking poorly about someone else (or yourself!), the person interviewing you is going to walk away feeling negative themselves. If something negative really can’t be avoided, angel it from a learning perspective, sharing what you learned from the seemingly negative experience, and transition the conversation away from the topic.

In order to make sure your interviewer walks away with warm fuzzies, try sharing something personal about why the job aligns with your purpose or mission in the world, such as “The reason this opportunity strikes a personal chord with me is…” and then share whatever it is that brings passion into your work.

Always remember to look them in the eye, and yes, amongst all the stress, don’t forget to smile and have a good time.

3. Being unaware of the company culture.

If you are on a serious job hunt it can begin to feel like you are spamming out applications, turning into a zombie in search of the right fit.  If you aren’t careful, you might walk into an interview unprepared to speak to the specific role and company.

Take the time to really do your research before you walk into the lobby for an interview. This includes not only the job description and company products or services but also getting a strong grasp on their culture.

We know the first impression matters, and part of that is what you wear.  Are you interviewing at a large formal corporation are is it a trendy startup?  It is never a good idea to show up casual to an interview, but it is in your best interest to know beforehand what the workplace environment is like.

Hop online and search through the companies’ social media for any workplace images.  If you do a little research I am sure you can find pictures of employees at work events or walk through campus. This not only tells you what to wear, but also whether the culture aligns with what you are looking for.

During this search begin to compile a list of questions specific to the role and company.  There is nothing more off-putting for an interviewer than a candidate who has no questions.  When the hiring managers ask, “Do you have any questions for me?” it might be difficult at the moment to come up with something.  Don’t become a deer in headlights with this question, instead have a list prepared. Having a few thoughtful questions will speak volumes about your interest in the role.

Always remember that as the person being interviewed, you are not calling the shots, they are.  They brought you in to talk, so let them lead. Save your inquiries for the end, when they open the floor for you to ask them questions.

The first step to anything is awareness.  Begin to pay more attention to what and how you handle interviews or practice interviews and take this learning into your next interview.  Because being on the job hunt is not something you want to be doing forever.
