#JobSearch : Looking To Work At A Startup? Explore These 5 Job Boards. Great REad & Access!

July 19, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Startup job boards cater to early-stage and growth-stage technology companies looking to expand their teams. These platforms often attract a wide range of tech-oriented and innovative companies, including software development firms, fintech startups, artificial intelligence and machine learning companies, digital agencies, e-commerce businesses and tech-focused divisions of larger corporations.

The most in-demand startup jobs on these platforms usually include software engineering roles (such as full-stack, front-end and back-end developers), design, user-interface and user-experience positions, product management roles, data science and analytics jobs, marketing and growth positions and sales roles. Many startup job boards also feature leadership positions, like chief technology officer, head of engineering or director-level roles, reflecting the need for experienced professionals to guide growing startups.

Startup job listings often emphasize the unique aspects of working for startups, such as fast-paced environments, opportunities for rapid growth and the chance to make a significant impact. They may also highlight the importance of cultural fit and the ability to wear multiple hats, which are crucial in startup environments.

Some platforms may offer additional resources like salary information, company culture insights and industry trends to help job seekers make informed decisions.

1. Y Combinator

Y Combinator is an eminent startup accelerator and venture capital firm that provides intensive mentorship, funding and support to early-stage startups. Its job board is particularly valuable for those interested in working in the startup ecosystem, as it exclusively features positions at YC-backed companies, which are often seen as some of the most promising and well-supported startups in the tech industry.

The platform provides features like private browsing for those already employed at YC startups. It gives founders the ability to directly contact potential candidates.

Several startups are actively hiring software engineers, reflecting the high demand for technical talent within the YC ecosystem.

While software engineering roles dominate the job board, there’s a diverse range of other popular positions sought after by YC startups. Design and UI/UX roles are in high demand, reflecting the importance of user experience in tech products. Product management positions are also prevalent, as startups seek professionals to guide product development and strategy.

Recruiting and HR roles feature prominently, indicating the focus on team growth and talent acquisition. Sales positions are another key category, highlighting the need for revenue generation in growing startups. Scientific roles are also listed as a distinct category, likely catering to deep tech or research-oriented ventures.

The job listings are highly concentrated in the major tech hubs, such as San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Boston, Austin and India, as well as remote opportunities.

#JobSearch : The Best Job Boards To Get You Hired In 2023. Guess Which is the Best/Largest? You’re On It. LinkedIn.

September 16, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

There are hundreds of job boards out there all claiming to hold the ticket to your dream job. While having lots of options can be enticing, sometimes the more specific you get, the higher your chances of success become.

If you’ve been looking for a guide to the best job boards out there, you have come to the right place. Here’s my list of favorites, along with their pros and specialties, to help you land the career that you deserve. Let’s dive in!

LinkedIn (For Building Connections)

LinkedIn is the most popular job board site in the world, and for good reason. This social network slash job posting site goes beyond just jobs and helps you build connections with recruiters and hiring managers in the industries you’ve got your eyes set on.

LinkedIn allows you to:

  • Connect with potential companies, previous colleagues, and alumni from your university
  • Get endorsed for your skills and network with managers from the same field
  • Upload your resume, personalize your profile, and create your own personal brand
  • Get access to trainings and best practices in your field to help you stand out

The feature that most candidates best know LinkedIn for is the “Easy Apply” button but I think it is often overused. Instead of spamming apply for different roles, I actually recommend you take it a step further and first connect with the hiring team directly.

You can send a note like this to the recruiter when sending them a connection request:

Hi NAME,

I saw your team was recruiting for <ROLE> and I’d love to be considered.

I spent the last <# YEARS WITH COMPANY> and some of my big wins include <ACHIEVEMENTS IN YOUR ROLE>. My core skills are in <RELEVANT SKILLS FOR THE ROLE> and I think I’d be a great fit for the role you have on hand.

Let me know if you are free for a call later this week to discuss further. Thank you for your time!

Best,

YOUR NAME

Glassdoor (For Company Reviews)

Glassdoor is another site with one of the largest volumes of job postings from all sorts of different industries. With Glassdoor’s company information, you can get an insider’s peek into the company culture, type of management, career mobility and work-life balance. And that’s on top of the info you get on salary, total compensation details, and benefits.

Glassdoor comes with free and paid versions, with the latter giving you access to more advanced analytics to help you decide better if the job fits you well. And if you’re looking for companies that tick all the boxes for an overall fulfilling career, be sure to check out Glassdoors’ list of Best Places to Work.

Getwork (For Verified Jobs)

With the rise of job search scams, it’s important to stay vigilant out there on different job boards. It’s crucial you are reviewing jobs that are real and verified. That’s where Getwork comes into play. Getwork sources the job postings directly from the hiring company’s careers page and provides you details about the role including information on salary range, remote opportunities, company background, and more.

Wellfound (For Startups)

Originally known as AngelList, Wellfound is the best place to find roles for hot, new startups. Also, the interface is clean, hip and fun, much like the job environment it promotes. From engineering jobs at AI companies to operations at emerging FinTech firms, Wellfound has a little bit of everything when it comes to the world’s best startups. Beyond the role, you can also find a lot of information on the company, its founders, and how much capital they have raised. It’s a good idea to target some of these companies that have just raised money because you know they will be in growth mode!

RemoteOK (For Remote Work)

If you’re done with the office forever, then I suggest you check out RemoteOK for remote work opportunities. The site offers a heap of different jobs that are freelance and remote to give you that leeway to do other things, and have control of your daily workflow. Flexibility is the name of the game when you search for jobs and gigs on RemoteOK. While they mainly focus on tech roles, there are also lots of great opportunities in account management, finance, operations, and more.

Choose What’s Best For You

There are many factors that you have to consider in choosing and applying for a new job — the salary, work hours, location and/or remote, the values the company holds, your manager, and more.

But the key to unlocking the door to the right job for you is you knowing what you are looking for in the first place. With a clear set of your values and priorities, it will be easier for you to review these job board sites and find the dream job you’ve always wanted!

#JobSearch : Getting Ghosted By Phony Phantom Jobs. Are the Jobs on the Job Boards, Real? MUst REad!

March 29, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Thousands of white-collar professionals have lost their jobs recently due to the fast-changing economy. Eager to return to work, job hunters scour job boards, LinkedIn and corporate career sites. However, there is a high likelihood that the perfect role with the company you’d love to work for is not real, according to the Wall Street Journal..

In a survey conducted by Clarify Capital, around 25% of hiring managers self-reported that they’ve kept job listings open for more than four months. Moreover, they don’t intend to hire anyone in the near future.

The reasons for posting “ghost jobs” include building a pipeline of candidates for when the tide turns and recruiting gears up again, making it seem as if the company is doing well and expanding and humoring employees that help is on the horizon with new staff arriving to help with the workload.

Why Companies Post Phantom Jobs

As a recruiter, I’ve seen this trend play out over two decades. Human resources and hiring managers place phantom jobs, anticipating that things will improve and companies will eventually hire. The position is somewhat real, as the firm is lining up applicants for the future.

When companies lay off personnel, the extra work is dumped on the remaining employees. Feeling overwhelmed and frustrated by taking on more assignments for the same pay, they’ll contemplate leaving and seeking a new job. To appease the workers, posting a job buys time. It makes it look like the company understands that people are overworked and actively searching for new talent to fill the empty seats.

Businesses want to keep up appearances. Posting jobs gives off the illusion that the company is in good financial health and growing.

Job Aggregation Sites

Many job aggregation sites exist, such as Indeed, SimplyHired, GlassDoor, LinkUp and CareerJet. These sites scrape jobs from various sources and list them on their respective platforms. Often, there is a disconnect between the original posting on a career site, like JPMorgan, and the listing on a job aggregator site. The listing may linger on for many months, as the company that posted the role doesn’t have control of taking it off from the aggregator. It’s in the best interest of aggregators to keep up the jobs longer to entice job hunters to keep returning. To someone unaware of this system, they’ll think the job is freshly posted, but, in actuality, it has been up for months.

Diversity Hiring

There is a big push for hiring diverse candidates. Jobs are posted to show that the company is trying to build an inclusive workforce. Most of the time, it’s genuine. Other times, it’s virtue signaling, and the jobs aren’t moving too quickly.

Somewhat related, hiring managers have already picked the person for the role, but need to publicly show that they are making a good-faith effort to interview a full slate of candidates.

Testing The Waters

One of the best ways to find out if a job catches the attention of job seekers is to put it out there. Once the job is posted, companies can ascertain if there is an interest. If it doesn’t receive many applicants, the company may iterate and change the copy, include the salary or enhance the total compensation package.

It’s a little cold-blooded, but businesses place job postings to get a sense of whether or not they can get someone less expensive than current workers. In a tough job market with many people in between roles, a manager may feel they could let go of some low performers and malcontents and replace them with people who desperately need a new job and won’t push too much for a higher salary.

Picking Your Brain And Getting Free Work

Sometimes, companies want to pick the brains of job seekers. They want to find out what their competitors are up to, how much they pay their staff and whether or not they’re doing well.

A common lament of aggrieved job seekers is that they are made to do tasks, submit work products and offer ideas that the company will use.

A Big Issue That Impacts The Federal Reserve Bank’s Decisions

In a time when the United States Federal Reserve Bank is raising interest rates to combat inflation, relying upon, in part, job openings could lead to erroneous decisions being made by the Fed.

The U.S. Department of Labor releases a monthly jobs report showing how many jobs were created or lost. A lesser-known report is the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. The report relies upon the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data about job openings. Since we now know that there are many dubious job listings, the government is operating on flawed data. Fake jobs may make the job market look better than it really is.

This May Make You Feel Better

It’s easy to get frustrated when you keep searching and applying for jobs, but don’t get any interviews. It may be cold comfort to know that it’s not you; it’s the system. In your job search, you must scrutinize the job listing for any hints that it may not be real. If you’re called in for an interview, be assertive. Let them know you’re aware of the proliferation of phantom jobs and ask direct questions to determine if the job is real. It may be awkward. However, you’re better off asking the tough questions to ensure that after months go by, you don’t get ghosted by a phantom job.

#JobSearch : Where to Search for Today’s Jobs -Finding Your Next Opportunity. It Might Seem Counterintuitive, but the More Experienced you Are, the Longer it May Take You to Find a Job.

November 20, 2020/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Finding the perfect job takes time, patience and the right resources. It takes people around nine weeks, on average, to find a job once they start searching, according to Indeed.com. The time it takes for you may vary depending on your industry, location and level of experience. It might seem counterintuitive, but the more experienced you are, the longer it may take you to find a job, because employers may see you as overqualified.

But there are some ways you can make the search more constructive.

1. Network.
One of the most powerful things you can do when searching for jobs is actively network. It can be awkward and, for people who aren’t naturally outgoing, requires a bit of courage and initiative.
  • Start with friends and people you know. Get a feel for creating rapport with those you are already comfortable with in order to have some ice-breakers ready to go when you expand beyond your social circles.
  • Find people who have similar jobs to the one you are seeking. Let them know you would like to learn more about their jobs and see if they know of any openings in the industry. The more you make connections, the easier it will be to gather intel on what is available.
  • Force yourself out of your comfort zone. Start reaching out beyond your immediate circle once you feel like you have a good rhythm. You don’t need to contact 10 people right out of the gate. The first couple of cold calls are always the hardest.
  • Know that people genuinely enjoy your interest in them. Don’t feel like you are imposing on people by asking about their jobs. Steve Dalton, author of the “Two Hour Job Search” told us, “It’s an old maxim that ‘interested is interesting.’ They take a reciprocal interest in you because you have good taste in who you listen to speak, and that’s where jobs come from.”

What Skill Sets Do You have to be ‘Sharpened’ ?

Article continued …

2. Start your search with online job boards.

Looking at online job boards is an efficient way to find opportunities. Most employers use one or more of them to find candidates.

Glassdoor: Glassdoor is known as a resource for researching a potential employer. You will find ratings and reviews of different employers on a range of topics, such as compensation, company culture, how generous benefits are, and what employees think about top executives.

Indeed: Indeed’s main function is as a search engine for jobs. It also happens to be one of the most popular sites for job candidates, which makes it attractive to employers trying to cast a wide net in search of potential candidates. It has other value-add offerings, such as a salary comparison tool, allowing you to look at compensation trends among different industries. It also allows other users to review companies, providing insights into what it might be like to work for or interview at certain companies.

Ladders: The selling point of TheLadders is that it only features vetted jobs with annual compensation of $100,000 or above. It offers a well-curated index of jobs by industry and skill specialism. It also allows you to filter by the highest-paying companies in each industry.

LinkedIn: LinkedIn markets itself as a “professional social network” where, aside from job listings, you can potentially reach decision makers at the companies you wish to apply to. Candidates can get an edge by looking at the profiles and posts of those who they might be interviewing with for insights into their career paths. Since users’ profiles are always available to view and the platform is used for networking, LinkedIn allows potential employers to find you whether or not you are actively seeking a new job. This sets it apart from other job sites.

SimplyHired: This site can flag job openings to you based on your location. It also offers a resume-building tool with a number of templates and formats specific to your career. Employers aren’t charged to post jobs on SimplyHired, so the quality of the jobs may not be quite as high as on other boards.

Upwork: If you are looking for freelance gigs, there are a wealth of job opportunities on Upwork, particularly if you have technical or design skills. The platform is well designed for bidding on jobs and communicating with those commissioning the work.

ZipRecruiter: ZipRecruiter’s key features include an option to message with employers through the site and a one-click application option. The platform will also let you know when employers are looking at your resume.

Key takeaways from job boards

  • Different boards have different features, so it makes sense to use more than one to take advantage of the resources they offer.
  • Researching a potential employer can help you decide where you want to work.
  • You can streamline your search using boards that cater to certain pay levels, or based on employee and interviewee feedback.
3. Get an inside track by joining a professional organization.

Professional organizations can be a useful way to network with people in your industry and give you access to jobs that might not be widely found on the job boards we mentioned above. JobStars has a list of professional organizations you can use as a starting point for finding one relevant for your search.

4. Get someone to be your job advocate. Work with placement agencies and job recruiters.

Agencies and recruiters can maximize your search potential by actively looking for work for you. Once they have familiarized themselves with your skills and experience, they can be an additional resource pounding the pavement to help you land your dream job.

Keep in mind agencies and recruiters will receive a fee from the employer for placing you, and companies only work with a preferred list of agencies and recruiters. This can work both for and against you, depending on whether the job you are hoping to get is one they have been approved to recruit for.

You can find lists of recruiters and agencies by industry on JobStars. Other websites where you can find recruiters include SearchFirm, Online Recruiters Directory and Recruiterly. For creative jobs, a great place to look is Aquent.
