Lengthy job searches can test even the heartiest of souls, but when you mix a tight internal timeline with slow external results, it’s an even greater challenge. You have all the typical highs and lows of applying (waiting to hear back, facing rejection, dusting yourself off and trying again), and the added pressure to land that new role yesterday.

Here are two powerful perspective shifts to help you make it through.

1. TIE DEADLINES TO YOUR EFFORTS (RATHER THAN RESULTS)

Have you ever said something like: “I’ll have a new job before the end of the month?” It’s sounds helpful, but it’s actually not.

By connecting the deadline to your personal efforts, you give yourself the opportunity to feel successful just by meeting it

That’s because you’re linking your goal to someone else’s behavior (which is outside of your control). When you tie a deadline to something that’s not within your power, you set yourself up to feel defeated if it falls through.

Instead, choose a goal based around something you do control. For example, “I will send out 10 applications by month’s end.” By connecting the deadline to your personal efforts, you give yourself the opportunity to feel successful just by meeting it—and that confidence boost can mean a lot during a tough search.

So, ask yourself, “What measurable action can I take that’ll move me closer to landing a position at my dream company?” Whatever your answer is—stepping up your networking, reaching out to a career coach—tie it to a reasonable deadline. This way, your goals will bring you results and peace of mind.

2. CHOOSE TO ERR ON THE SIDE OF POSITIVITY

Our brains have something called a “built-in negativity bias”, which means our first impression of events is likely to skew negatively. For example, if you face one of the following (common) disappointments, your initial reaction might be to get down on yourself:

Situation: You send out several resumes and don’t get any bites.
Thought: “I’m clearly a terrible candidate because no one’s responding.”

Situation: You come in as the second choice candidate for two jobs in a row.
Thought: This is too hard. I’m never going to get picked. I’m going to be stuck here forever.

Situation: Despite leaving early for an interview, you hit mega traffic and wind up arriving five minutes late.
Thought: “I blew this already.”

When you buy into these knee-jerk interpretations, it’s easy to feel down about the way things are going. So take a beat, and recognize that with a little focused attention you can come up with a more helpful perspective.

Here’s how those same situations could look after an effort to find the silver lining.

Situation: You send out several resumes over the course of a few weeks and don’t get any bites.
Thought: “The more ‘at-bats’ I take, the more likely I am to hit something.”

Situation: You come in as the second-choice candidate for two job prospects in a row.
Thought: “I must be doing something right to make it so far in the interview process.”

Situation: Despite leaving early for an interview, you hit mega traffic and wind up arriving five minutes late.
Thought: “Not the best start, but I can still make a great impression.”

Yes, this is very Pollyanna, and you’ll also want to make time to analyze what you could be doing differently to make sure you aren’t getting in your own way; e.g., Are you blowing your final interview by bringing up salary too soon?.

But don’t skip this pep talk and space to focus on the positive: That’s what’ll keep you motivated to keep trying. Can’t find a sunnier angle? You can always ask a supportive friend, family member, or professional for help. Or, at the very least, be aware when you’re jumping to negative conclusions. Just calling yourself out for that habit is a good reminder that often times, you’re choosing to be pessimistic.

I hated my first job. And I remember vividly how I worried I be stuck there for eternity. In reality, I changed things up to a much better work situation in just a few years.

Things will change, both because of your own efforts and because change is a constant in this world. Maybe the change you want isn’t coming as fast as you like, but it’ll come. Keep your focus on the things you can most influence—your actions and your thoughts. You’ll get a new job eventually. For now you just have to stay strong.

As the economy is constantly shifting and evolving, and churning undercurrents of consumer behavior call for different types of workers creating and supplying different products and services, it can be really difficult to know what employers want. 2. Industry-related programs

If you know what specific job or industry you’re gunning for, then you’re going to want to have a tool chest full of skills tailored for it. And in a world in which knowledge and software skills are as important as ever, figuring out which programs and skills you’ll need is paramount to getting hired. We put together a recent list of which programs are on employers’ wish lists for this year, so take a look and see which are relevant to your career track. Knowing these programs intimately will give you a big leg-up during the hiring process.

3. Development

These days, the word “developer” means so much more than someone who builds condos. And developers of all stripes are in high demand. In our case, we’re referring specifically to software and web developers, both of which possess skill sets that are highly sought-after by many big, flourishing companies. If this is a career track you’re interested in pursuing, go back to the previous item on our list, and figure out which software programs you need to be well-versed in to start getting successful interviews behind you.

4. Design

In the same way that developers are a hot commodity, so are designers. Designers possibly come in more stripes than developers, as there are graphic designers, software designers, game designers – hell, even fashion companies and automotive manufacturers need designers. Needless to say, the world needs designers. If you want to get specific, the world needs web designers, and algorithm designers. These are skills that will not only land you a job, but likely a pretty high salary.

5. Information security

We don’t often go a week or so without hearing about some giant data breach, which typically puts the personal information for millions of people at risk. It’s happened to big corporations like Target, and it’s even happened to government agencies. Because data is so valuable – and because so many people are out there trying to steal it – information security is something that every organization is quickly trying to beef up. That means there’s a need for information security professionals, leaving an opportunity to learn the skills and get hired.

There are a lot of problems to solve, so don’t hesitate to learn and start applying right away.

The adage “What you don’t know won’t hurt you” is very misleading, especially for people in transition or otherwise contemplating a career change. Not only is the contention untrue, but also it in fact hinders the ability to get what you want. Furthermore, it conveys a false sense of positive feeling. For example, those in transition are advised to customize their resumes to the job openings they’re applying to.

Sounds logical, but it’s a laborious process that can take hours of close work, even though, at the end of the process, clicking on Submit or Apply gives a sense of satisfaction. But it’s a false satisfaction because nowadays, most if not all such submissions are going through electronic software called an applicant-tracking system, or ATS, which has its own rules.

If the applicant does not obey the rules, the resume or application goes into the proverbial black hole and never reaches its intended destination. That’s where the hurt comes in, because the applicant will never learn why it happened or how to correct the process for next time.

So, what to do?

 

Here are several suggestions. They apply only to electronic job applications, which means you should have two versions of the resume: one for ATS software so that it will reach a recruiter and another one for a human.

  1. Submit your resume in Microsoft Word format.
  2. Do not include tables in formatting the text.
  3. Be aware that there are many ATS providers, including archaic and new versions. As a candidate, you have no way of knowing which one your resume will have to deal with, and pdf files or files formatted in other ways might not be able to get read into every type of ATS software.
  4. Don’t format your resume by way of the use of a resume template.
  5. Use the standard, customary section headers for sections and put them on separate lines.
  6. Type those section headers in all capital letters, such as “Professional Experience,” but do not type anything else in all caps. Of course use a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, for the words in course titles and for all proper nouns.
  7. Be consistent when listing your previous companies and titles — whichever you want to list first for emphasis.
  8. List a company name with its appropriate suffix such as Inc. or LLC. Otherwise, the company name could be mistaken for a different company.
  9. Separate each resume section by a blank line, but never add a blank line within a paragraph.

Do not number the pages because computers see all information as continuous. Your page number would wind up appearing at random somewhere in the middle of the document.

As you can see, the foregoing steps may appear as details, but as another adage goes, “The devil is in the details;” and that notion could be both crucial and decisive for your future career.

A flashy resume could cause your application to get passed over. While a little creativity is welcome, going overboard is a problem, said Saad Rizvi, founder of career site Mentat. “In many cases, the first round interview screen is conducted by an ATS or Application Tracking System (in simple terms, a robot!). These programs are optimized for gathering information from a very basic design, and fancy graphs or pictures are not picked up or taken into consideration while filtering out resumes, so you might be passed over despite being a good fit for the role,” Rizvi told The Cheat Sheet.

2. Apply for as many jobs as you can at one company

No matter how tempting, resist the urge to blast your application to everyone at the same company. Also resist the urge to apply for multiple jobs at the same company. 3. Stay at a new job for at least one year

Job hopping looks bad on your resume, but if you’re miserable at a new job, don’t feel obligated to finish out the year. This is especially true if your job is making you sick. Debbie Chew, head of operations at Codementor, told The Cheat Sheet it’s best to leave and search for another opportunity. “If you’re downright unhappy with your job and you’re unable to cope, then it’s not worth it to pretend to be happy or stay. Instead of wasting your time at a job not suitable for you, you can be doing other things like learning a new skill or finding a different job,” said Chew.

4. Go on interviews for jobs you aren’t interested in just for the practice

Practice on your own time. Lori Bumgarner, career specialist and owner of passion and career coaching servicepaNASH, said hiring managers have a sixth sense and will know immediately what you’re doing. Your best bet is to only interview for jobs you would actually consider taking. “Avoid interviewing for a job you don’t intend to take if offered just for interview practice. Recruiters can often sense when a candidate is doing this, and recruiters run in the same circles (especially within the same industry) and they talk to each other. Word will get around if a candidate is known for doing this, which could hurt their chances of getting an interview or an offer for a job they actually want … If you want to improve your interview skills, do some mock interviews with friends or family who are in hiring positions at their jobs, or with a career coach,” Bumgarner said.

Some call it the fourth industrial revolution, or industry 4.0, but whatever you call it, it represents the combination of cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, and the Internet of Systems.In short, it is the idea of smart factories in which machines are augmented with web connectivity and connected to a system that can visualize the entire production chain and make decisions on its own.

And it’s well on its way and will change most of our jobs.

Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, has published a book entitled The Fourth Industrial Revolution in which he describes how this fourth revolution is fundamentally different from the previous three, which were characterized mainly by advances in technology.

In this fourth revolution, we are facing a range of new technologies that combine the physical, digital and biological worlds. These new technologies will impact all disciplines, economies and industries, and even challenge our ideas about what it means to be human.

These technologies have great potential to continue to connect billions more people to the web, drastically improve the efficiency of business and organizations and help regenerate the natural environment through better asset management, potentially even undoing all the damage previous industrial revolutions have caused.

But there are also grave potential risks.  Schwab outlines his concerns that organizations could be unable or unwilling to adapt to these new technologies and that governments could fail to employ or regulate these technologies properly. In the book he postulates that shifting power will create important new security concerns, and that inequalities could grow rather than shrink if things are not managed properly.

For example, as automation increases, computers and machines will replace workers across a vast spectrum of industries, from drivers to accountants and estate agents to insurance agents. By one estimate, as many as 47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk from automation.

Many experts suggest that the fourth industrial revolution will benefit the rich much more than the poor, especially as low-skill, low-wage jobs disappear in favor of automation.

But this isn’t new.  Historically, industrial revolutions have always begun with greater inequality followed by periods of political and institutional change.  The industrial revolution that began at the beginning of the 19th century originally led to a huge polarization of wealth and power, before being followed by nearly 100 years of change including the spread of democracy, trade unions, progressive taxation and the development of social safety nets.

It seems a safe bet to say, then, that our current political, business, and social structures may not be ready or capable of absorbing all the changes a fourth industrial revolution would bring, and that major changes to the very structure of our society may be inevitable.

Schwab said, “The changes are so profound that, from the perspective of human history, there has never been a time of greater promise or potential peril. My concern, however, is that decision makers are too often caught in traditional, linear (and non-disruptive) thinking or too absorbed by immediate concerns to think strategically about the forces of disruption and innovation shaping our future.”

In order to thrive, business leaders will have to actively work to expand their thinking away from what has been traditionally done, and include ideas and systems that may never have been considered. Business leaders must begin questioning everything, from rethinking their strategies and business models, to discovering the right investments in training and potentially disruptive R&D investments.

The future is happening around us.  And we must rise to the challenge to meet it and thrive in the new industrial revolution.

The hunt for the perfect position can take months. One rule of thumb says that you should expect to spend at least one month of job searching for every $10,000 you earn. So, if your currently salary is $70,000 per year, you can expect to spend at least seven months hunting for work.

If your current position is unbearable (you hate your boss, your company is massively dysfunctional, your commute is killing you), feeling that you’re at the mercy of the job market can be incredibly frustrating. If you’re out of work, waiting months to find a job may not even be an option. In either case, you need a new job, and you needed it yesterday.

Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to accelerate your job search. Here are five things you can do that will help you get hired faster, so that you can get your career – and your life – back on the right track.

1. Time your search right

Some seasons are more favorable for job searchers than others. Obviously, if you need work right away, you don’t have the luxury of waiting to look for a job. But if you’re itching for a change, you might want to start your search at a time of year when companies are more likely to be looking for new employees.

“The big months for hiring are January and February, and late September and October,” Scott Testa, chief operating officer of Mindbridge Software, told Monster. “Job seekers who make contact right at the start of these cycles have the best chance of being hired.”

Hiring often slows down in the summer, since many people are out of the office. If you’re thinking about looking for a new job now, consider spending the next month or two fine-tuning your resume, updating your LinkedIn profile, and building your network. Then, you can hit the ground running when hiring kicks into high gear around Labor Day.

2. Let people know you’re looking

If you’re only looking for jobs online, you’re missing out. Forty-one percent of people surveyed by staffing company Manpower reported that networking was the key to landing their latest job, as reported in Forbes. Many open positions are never posted online.

Don’t hesitate to make your job search public. Personally reach out to former co-workers and others in your network (both online and in real life) and ask for a favor that might help move your job search along.

3. Show employers what you’ve done

You know that “goals and objectives” statement at the top of your resume? Skip it, say experts. Your goal is obvious, after all – you want a job. Instead, use a summary statement that focuses on your past accomplishments. Show hiring managers and interviewers what you’ve done in the past and how that will make you a better employee for them.

“Even if you’re a recent college grad just joining a new industry, you’ve got a sentence or two you could put in that paragraph that might generate questions, interest and maybe even a job interview,” wrote Jon Acuff, author of Start, on Brazen Careerist.

In short, you need to brag a little (or maybe a lot). And whenever possible, it’s helpful to quantify your accomplishments. Don’t just say you recruited volunteers for a cause, say you recruited 50 volunteers and helped raise $50,000. Don’t just say that you managed a big project, say that you managed a big project and completed it two weeks early and $20,000 under budget.


4. Volunteer

Dedicating some of your time to helping others could make it much easier to find a job, according to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Career Assessment. The study looked at 265 unemployed twentysomethings and found that those who volunteered were more likely to have a job after six months than those who didn’t. Even volunteering for just an hour a week was associated with a greater chance of finding a job.

One reason that volunteering may so useful for young people looking for a job is that it demonstrates to employers that they have specific job-related skills – skills they may not be developing in college.

“Employers are no longer interested in training potential applicants who may do an outstanding job based on academic promise,” noted the study’s authors. “Volunteering activities provide opportunities for emerging adults to master specific skillsets and to demonstrate proof of competency and value.”

5. Clean up your social media

You should really know this by now, but here’s a reminder just in case you forgot: There’s a very good chance your potential employer is checking out your social media profiles. Forty-three percent of employers are researching candidates on social media, according to a CareerBuilder survey. If they don’t like what they see, it could cost you the job.

What social media behaviors turn off employers? Nearly half said they’d pass on an applicant who posted “provocative or inappropriate photographs or information.” Other social media no-no’s included:

  • Sharing information about drinking or using drugs
  • Bad-mouthing an employer or co-worker
  • Making racist, sexist, or other discriminatory comments
  • Sharing confidential information
  • Having an unprofessional screen name

Just as social media blunders can harm your job search, so can not having any online presence at all. A LinkedIn profile is a must at this point – 94% of recruiters used the site to find candidates, a 2014 survey by Jobvite found. Overall, 73% of recruiters said they had hired a candidate through social media.

In a way, writing the perfect email to a potential employer is a balancing act.On the one hand, you want to make your message and application stand out from the others they’re receiving. But you definitely don’t want to be too gimmicky or unprofessional.

We consulted Amanda Augustine, career advice expert for TopResume, about how to send a clear and compelling message to a company you’re dying to work for. Read on for seven tips that will get you one step closer to your dream job.

1. Write a clear subject line.

Augustine advised against getting catchy with subject lines. Instead, make it obvious that you’re submitting a job application.

If there are no specific directions in the job posting, something as simple as, “Application for Strategy Reporter (ID #12345): Shana Lebowitz” should work.

However, if you’re cold emailing a potential employer, you should get a bit more creative in your subject line.

Talk about the value you can provide — for example, “would love to share my ideas on increasing sales team productivity.” Consider what the person you’re emailing cares about and why she would want to read your message.

2. Address your message to the appropriate person.

“The worst thing you could do is put, ‘Dear Madam’ or ‘Dear Sir’ as your opening,” Augustine said,” because it shows you didn’t put any effort into researching the right person.”

You can do some sleuth work on LinkedIn and find out the name of the company recruiter or hiring manager who originally posted the job. If that doesn’t work, you can leverage your network — do you know anyone who works there? — and find out who the appropriate addressee is.

In the rare case that the job is anonymously posted, you can say, “Dear HR Professional” or “Dear Hiring Manager.”

3. Talk about what you can provide the employer.

Keep in mind, Augustine said, that the employer is the target audience. So think about what type of value you’re offering them, as opposed to the other way around.

In the body of your email, mention exactly what you can do for the employer and what you’ve learned about that company.

4. Customize the email to the individual employer.

Augustine said it’s important to tailor your message to each individual job and company.

“The more you talk about their specific needs and how your skill set does make you a really good solution to those needs, the more likely your message is to be read.”

And it might sound obvious, but make sure you include the name of the correct company in your email, especially if you’re emailing multiple employers at once.

“Oftentimes that can put you out of the running,” Augustine said. “Employers are looking for reasons to get rid of those applications.”

5. Don’t copy and paste your resume.

Augustine recommended not cutting and pasting your resume into the body of the email because the formatting ends up “atrocious.”

Instead, you should either attach a document or provide a link to a Google Doc. (You can hyperlink a few words so that you don’t end up with a long string of letters and numbers.) If you choose to submit a Google Doc, make sure you select the “view only” option for the employer.

6. Send your email ASAP after the job posting goes up.

“The sooner you get your job application in, the better,” Augustine said.

In general, you’ll want to submit it within 72 hours of the posting going up, because employers start to get inundated with applications after that and might not even open yours.

7. Follow up promptly.

Augustine recommends including a sentence in your email that says, “I will follow up with you on [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][whatever date] once you’ve had time to review my application.”

She advises planning to follow up one week after you send the application or, if there’s a close date on the job posting, planning to follow up a week after that. Make sure you mark the date on your calendar, so you don’t say you’re going to follow up and then forget.

We’re on much better footing, economically speaking, than at any time in the past seven or eight years. The Great Recession officially ended in June of 2009, and yet, six-and-a-half years later, we’re still feeling the effects. Though unemployment is down, and the economy is humming again, there’s still one big hang-up — a lot of people remain out of work.

The long-term unemployed, and the discouraged workers among them, are the ones who have really suffered as a result of economic turbulence over the past decade. Many people saw their jobs disappear, never to return again. Some of those jobs were shipped overseas, some were automated, and some were simply made redundant by changing tastes. There are a lot of reasons for these shifts, but the bottom line is that people who have wanted to get back to work are still having trouble finding a way to do so.

Just look at the ranks of the long-term unemployed. As of September 2015, 2.1 million people were among the long-term unemployed, and the labor force participation rate was 62.4%. That’s fairly low, but there are numerous reasons for it. These are the numbers politicians are constantly citing as evidence that the economy is still on shaky ground.

For a lot of people, these numbers are irrelevant — they just want to get back to work.

Whether it’s age, a lack of skills, or larger economic shifts, there are a lot of reasons many would-be workers are finding themselves out of the labor pool. And when you’re down on your luck, and face months or years of rejection from employers, it can take a real toll.

So, for these individuals, finding a path back into the workforce is the chief objective. The problem: that path is hidden — or finding it, at least, is much more difficult than it used to be. That’s why we’ve made a short, four-step action plan to help out.

These are four ways you can get back on your feet, start getting back into a routine, and get your mind and body retrained for work. It may not be ideal, in many cases, but for some people, following these steps may do wonders. It’ll feel like a step backward, but just think of that as a way to get a running start back into the labor pool.

1. Volunteer

When you’re unemployed, you’re not getting paid. So, you may as well put your time and skills to work by helping out in your community — even if you’re still not getting paid. Volunteering will get you out of the house, help you establish a routine, and help you make additional contacts. People like to see others who are willing to help out, and if you have the time, volunteering can help secure you a ticket back to the work force.

Take a look at community bulletin boards, both virtual and physical, or think of some organizations you’d like to help out. There are hundreds out there, each with needs that you can help fill. You may even end up learning a new skill for free. Volunteering will get you back into the habit of going to work, give you a resume booster, and help you expand your contacts list.

2. Freelance

Why not put the skills you do have to work for you — in mercenary fashion? There are tons of opportunities forfreelance work thanks to the Internet, and now, almost anyone can find a side-gig of some kind. If you can write, edit, draw, or even consult on any number of topics, there’s probably a space for you in the freelance economy.

In fact, the entire economy might be shifting more in this direction, toward mini-businesses or services offered by freelance entrepreneurs. We recently talked all about it with the CEO of Time Etc., one such company helping to facilitate that shift. Take a look around the web, and see where you might be able to find some work, and start to earn again.

3. Get active — and add it to your resume

Getting active can mean just about anything, and volunteering or freelancing counts. What employers don’t like to see is someone who has been sitting idle for a long period of time. That’s why it’s key to get active, in one way or another, and make sure that you’re putting that on your resume. If you’ve been out of work for months, or even years, it’s going to be a red flag for a hiring manager. They’ll have questions as to what, exactly, you’ve been doing with your time (even if you’ve been trying desperately to find work).

Volunteer, freelance, or explore other opportunities to put your time to good use. Then, make sure you’re making it clear on your resume that you’ve been busy — even if it’s not in a full-time or professional capacity.

4. Make job hunting your current profession

This is the most important thing: if you don’t have a job, your job is to find a job. That means when you are not taking care of family duties, volunteering, freelancing, or taking care of other responsibilities, your time is spent looking for work. Think of your job search as your full-time gig. This is what you do, until you find what you’re looking for. And be tenacious.

To get back into the workforce, you need a job. Any job. It may not be fun or ideal in any sense, but getting back to work is much better than remaining idle. And it’s the first big step toward getting back onto the careertrajectory you want.
