Within the United States, the professional, scientific, and computer-related occupations have the highest shares of job postings for hybrid roles, and most importantly, fully remote work, according to recent findings from a National Bureau of Economic Research study.

Across these sectors can be found companies who have taken innovative approaches to hiring and proactive employee retention, ensuring employee wellbeing is consistently upheld, including fully remote, hybrid options, unlimited PTO, and even offering access to meditation, yoga, and wellness classes.

When searching for employers who are hiring for fully remote jobs, remember to consider the bigger picture. Is remote an afterthought, something that they’ve shoved into their policy as a way to attract talent, but hasn’t been fully thought through? Or is remote working part of a more extensive employee support and development package, in which your wellbeing and professional growth is holistically championed?

Some of these employers have been highlighted by FlexJobs as being most active in posting the highest number of remote jobs, hiring fully remote and flexible roles since the start of the year.

The industries represented by these employers span the most popular industries for remote work, mirroring the sectors listed in the NBER study, such as healthcare, consulting, technology, finance, and social media.

Veeva is an international cloud-computing company specifically focused on the life sciences industry. They also have a work-from-anywhere policy, while investing in their global offices for occasional meetings.

3. AECOM

AECOM is an infrastructure consulting firm, covering several projects on a multinational level, including large-scale construction management, urban planning, and engineering. The employer was also listed as one of the Most Admired Companies.

4. CVS Health

A household name for many, CVS Health is the second-largest healthcare company, being beaten only by UnitedHealth Group. It provides health solutions including CVS Pharmacy, Aetna Health, and CVS Speciality, with associated apps. CVS Health expresses commitment to diversity including employees with disabilities, and is transparent about its hiring process on its website.

5. HubSpot

For some people, remote means the opportunity to work from home or in the nearby café as they please, while for others, it entails what is known as the “work-from-anywhere” policy.

Almost 50% of workers admitted they’d take a pay cut for the freedom to work from any location, according to a recent FlexJobs survey, while 75% of respondents said they would use a work-from-anywhere policy if this was granted by their employer.

Non-freelancing professionals who are digital nomads, are able to work from any location in the world (sometimes with the sole restriction of needing to work within reasonable time-zones for collaboration) and are employed by companies that take a fully remote, work-from-anywhere approach.

Such companies can be hard to find. Thankfully, FlexJobs recently analyzed and compiled a list of companies from their database of employers that adhere to providing the following benefits for the majority of their recent remote job listings:

Top 10 In-Demand Work-From-Anywhere Jobs

But what about roles? According to the same report, the main careers that came out as being most likely to be adapted to working from anywhere as a digital nomad, due to the number of work-from-anywhere job postings that involved them, include IT, marketing, project management, and sales and accounting.

If you’re looking to get hired sooner this year, it might be worth checking these in-demand remote job titles which have witnessed a surge in flexible job postings for work-from-anywhere candidates:

1. Account Executive

An account executive manages client accounts and builds relationships with them; their goal is primarily to meet sales targets and achieve customer satisfaction.

2. Content Writer

Content writers create written content for various platforms such as websites, blogs, and email marketing, which engages and informs audiences, with the goal of making sales and increasing brand awareness.

3. Data Analyst

I think it’s fair to say that most people would prefer to do a myriad of other things rather than go to work everyday. Unfortunately, you need to earn a living to provide for food, shelter, clothing and other basic necessities required for you to survive.

There, however, are some fortunate people who love what they do for a living. Billionaire Warren Buffett continues to work into his 90s, while other notable politicians, celebrities and businesspeople remain active in the latter half of their lives. These people thrive on the action, intellectual challenges and seem to generally enjoy their jobs.

However, if you’re unhappy at work, it can be detrimental to your mental health and emotional well-being. Reporting to a dictatorial boss, remaining stuck without a promotion for years or not being paid what you’re worth will wear you down over time. If you find yourself in this position, you must figure out why and what to do about it, or risk being chronically dissatisfied and miserable.

What To Do Next

If you are unhappy in your work life, the first step you must take is to speak with your direct manager. It may be awkward and uncomfortable, but request a one-on-one meeting with your boss. To avoid a potential blow-up, talk in terms of possible solutions instead of offering a litany of complaints. Focus on the reasons why you deserve the additional compensation, promotion and bonus.

During this conversation, ensure that you are not in attack mode or pointing fingers for blame, or else it will not go well. Even if you are understandably upset, you must play the game and not add more flames to the fire.

To ensure a more meaningful interaction, take time to think deeply about the triggers that are making you unhappy. Could it be your micromanaging and toxic boss, an unpleasant corporate culture, being passed over for raises and promotions or your rude co-workers?

Once you’ve isolated the things that you dislike, try to figure out how to make changes to improve the situation.

If you harbor ideas of fixing the situation, now is the time to share what will make your work life better. For example, ask why you didn’t get a promotion. Inquire about what you need to do to get your career to the next level. If you feel underutilized, let your boss know. It will be helpful to bring to the table documents, data and information that reflects you’re doing a great job, but are being overlooked.

If you desire an internal lateral transfer to another division or feel the necessity of gaining additional knowledge, upskilling and training, ask your manager to help achieve these goals.

Don’t Be Afraid To Move Internally Or Leave

Be prepared, as you might not get the answers you had hoped for. If that’s the case, in the short term, try to make your daily experience at least tolerable. Focus on the aspects you can control. This includes setting boundaries with your boss and colleagues.

If nothing changes, after a while, look into opportunities to transfer to a different department or team. The switch could provide a fresh, new perspective and a better fit for your skills and interests.

If you’ve exhausted all options and your work situation is still causing unhappiness or is negatively impacting your mental health, you may need to start looking for opportunities elsewhere. Update your résumé and LinkedIn profile, seek out recruiters that specialize in your space and start looking for a new job.

Work-Life Balance And A Healthy Mindset

It’s important to cultivate a healthy work-life balance, especially when you’re unhappy at work. Prioritize activities and hobbies you enjoy outside of work to reduce burnout. Speak with friends, family or meet with a therapist to help you through this situation.

Look at the abundant lifeyou have outside of the office, and express gratitude for all the great things you have going for yourself. Try not to dwell on the negativity. Focus on your successes, no matter how small, so you can find a measure of happiness.

You will need some time away to disconnect. Change up your routine by utilizing your paid time off to relax and reenergize. A change of scenery will do you well and help give you mental clarity to decide your next steps.

Find sports, clubs and hobbies that you can succeed in. This will help gain your confidence back. Slowly building up small, incremental successes will provide you with positive reinforcement and move you forward.

Prepare a game plan to figure out the next step in your career journey. Write an action plan on how you will achieve those goals, and then actually do it. The process of writing it down makes it real and will help hold you accountable by physically seeing it.

Do What Makes You Feel Better

By helping others in need, you can feel better about yourself and it will also put your own problems into perspective. Volunteer your time at a food kitchen for the homeless or a children’s hospital.

When you get despondent, you may resort to excessive drinking, eating, risk-taking and drugs to numb the pain. These things will only worsen your situation. Do the opposite by focusing on your physical, mental and emotional health. Engage in activities such as reading, watching intelligent and uplifting videos, listening to inspiring podcasts, going to the gym, doing yoga or just taking long walks in nature.

Think of the people that make you miserable and extricate yourself from those social settings. Stop watching vacuous shows on television or doom-scrolling and substitute those activities with a productive, new hobby.

Live in the moment, by stopping your critical monkey brain from telling you how bad you are, and appreciate the beauty that life has to offer.

One of LinkedIn’s most vital, yet neglected, goals is to obtain as many recommendations from past supervisors, bosses, peers, and co-workers as possible to enrich your profile. You can never have enough! If you are undergoing interviews for job consideration, future employers can link to the recommenders and find out more about you on the social media platform. They can also contact your referrals to get the ‘skinny’ on your past performance.

But what if you are not actively looking for a job and are more of a passive careerist? What is the point of getting involved in the recommendation process? Exposure and branding. Did you catch in the previous paragraph that I noted future employers can link to the recommender and engage? What do they see when they click on the link to your name in another person’s recommendation? Your profile. This subtle branding gives you more exposure and eyeballs on your LinkedIn profile and reputation, enabling you to build your brand.

Your LinkedIn profile is a rich marketing vehicle for your skills and capabilities. Once you have reached 100% profile completeness, recruiters and headhunters may see your referrals to others and link through to your profile. If you provide your contact information in the summary section, recruiters can easily pick up a phone or send an email. Once folks link into your profile – you may be a ‘better candidate’ for the position they are trying to fill. What a great way to passively shop for a new job, right?

Who do you want to provide recommendations for? Look for the shakers and movers in the industry with which you worked in the past or your current position. Look for your LinkedIn connections with many folks connecting to them. Search out profile owners who have a considerable following. Look at the company profiles for businesses you used to work for employees on the profile for which you can provide recommendations.

On some company pages, you may see profile owners in a listing for ‘most recommended.’ Clicking on that profile might take you to the profile where you can send a connection invitation to a high-powered industry expert. Once they accept your invitation to connect, more people will look at your profile because they want to connect to that mover and shaker, too!

Remember that exposure – in a good way – is vital to branding yourself and increasing your public relations to a new and potential strategic alliance with future employers. If you’re struggling with a big career decision, your underlying challenge likely involves either: a) properly evaluating the risk associated with a specific action, b) identifying and narrowing down a long list of options, or c) choosing between two or three good options.

While each of these challenges requires a different approach to get to the best decision, they all share the same first step: offloading the decision-making criteria in your brain onto a spreadsheet or sheet of paper, to ensure you’ve captured and accurately weighed them all.

The following techniques will help you to choose the best option when facing any of the scenarios described above.

How to properly evaluate risk

Perhaps you’re thinking of making a risky career move, such as quitting a job before finding another one, going for a new job or promotion that could lead to dissatisfaction, going back to school, retiring early or addressing a difficult situation with a colleague. To properly assess the risk, ask yourself these questions:

  • How likely is it that the thing I fear will happen?
  • If the fear materialized, how damaging would it be?
  • Can I do anything to mitigate the risk?
  • What’s the risk in NOT taking action and how likely is it to materialize?
  • If I do take action, how likely am I to receive the benefit?
  • If I do take action, how big will the benefit be?

In his Ted Talk, Tim Ferris describes an exercise he calls Fear Setting which enables you to score the answers to each of these questions. You can also download a template that facilitates this Fear Setting analysis.

One client was contemplating leaving her job without having another one lined up. She was very unhappy in her current role, had no time to find something else, and severance wasn’t an option. Yet she was reluctant to leave because of concern about both income loss and finding another job quickly. Doing this exercise led to her decision to quit, and she’s happily employed now. She realized:

  • The negative impact that staying in this role would have on her family was too great.
  • She could mitigate the possibility of her not finding another job by growing and leveraging her network and joining a professional association.
  • Her worst-case loss-of-income scenario wasn’t that bad; she might have to postpone retirement for two years, which she could live with.
  • The likely benefit of landing the right role was huge and potentially life transforming.

How to narrow down a long list of career options

In this situation, you’re unclear about the solutions to your career dissatisfaction because you don’t know all the options or which ones to pursue. Here’s what to do:

  1. Develop your decision-making criteria. You can use this post as a guide. Include the things you enjoy doing that you do well, your work-related values on which you don’t want to compromise, and your vision for your life.
  2. Brainstorm many career options. Keep in mind that the key to effective brainstorming is being open – you can always cross out items later. List these options in rows on a spreadsheet, or down the margin of a sheet of paper. If you need help coming up with ideas, ask people in your network, scan job postings, and check out these online resources.
  3. Add some very simple weighting to each of the decision-making criteria. Don’t make this overly complicated as the point is to quickly narrow down options. For example, start off by giving all your criteria an equal weight, say “1.” If a criterion is truly a deal-breaker if not met, then give it a large weight, say 10. For example, if you can’t take a job you would love because it pays below a certain level, then earning at least this amount would get a 10.
  4. Narrow down the list of options by scoring each of the job targets in the rows against your decision-making criteria in the columns; add up all the 1’s and the 10’s in that row.
  5. Focus on the highest-scoring items. To confirm their priority, do additional research or apply additional weighting as described below.

How to decide between two or three good career options

Once you’ve narrowed down a list of many options to just two or three, you can now more precisely weight your decision-making criteria to make your final decision. Add two types of weights:

  • How important the criterion is to you (scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is the most important)
  • How much of the criterion is present (scale of 0 to 3, where 0 is not present and 3 is fully present).

Score each option you’re evaluating by multiplying the importance of each criterion by the presence of that criterion. Then add up the scores across all the criteria to get a total. The table below shows how a client evaluated two job offers.decisionmaking table

As multiple companies (Intel, Warner Bros. Discovery, Robinhood) announce layoffs, aspiring career changers like Kera might decide to pause their efforts. If you’re already anxious about the economy, you may not want to add on the anxiety of a job search. Even if you’re lucky enough to land a new job, job security is more tenuous for the new hire — you might be first-in, first-out in a market downturn. If your emotional and mental health is tenuous, the stress of a new job might be too much.

How do you move forward with a career change given the emotional and mental health issues during this pandemic and economic downturn? This is probably the most significant issue holding me back from actively pursuing my career pivot rather than continuing to “plan” for it. I still have a job that still provides a paycheck for now at least, and even though I am deeply unhappy in this job I am very hesitant to make that leap for fear of not being able to provide for my family (I am the sole income earner at the moment) just for a chance that I might be happier in a different job / company / industry. – Kera

However, you don’t have to quit your job right away. You can still move towards your dream career without jeopardizing your income. Even in a down market, you can minimize career risk while maximizing your chances at landing a job you love.

1 – Learn to be happy in an unhappy job

Jay worked in a niche area of tax where the typical career path stayed at one level for years. He was feeling stagnant, but generally liked his work and colleagues. Rather than quit a mostly good situation, he tackled the specific area of concern – his lack of growth and challenge – by pursuing professional development outside his job. He took on an adjunct role and became active in his trade association. While he eventually left his job, it was years later, and his outside-of-work efforts were significant in helping him land his next bigger role.

As Jay did, pinpoint the specific reason for your dissatisfaction with your current job, and work on that specifically. You might be able to find enough fulfillment outside of work that your unhappy job counts for less of your overall well-being. Or you might be able to work with your manager on restructuring the scope of your job, changing up your schedule or improving your work environment. Figuring out how to be happy in an unhappy situation helps minimize career risk for several reasons: 1) you’re not in a rush to leave and won’t settle for a suboptimal move; 2) you increase your resilience which is a helpful trait for managing the invariable ups and downs of a job search and overall career; and 3) you maintain an upbeat demeanor which makes you more attractive to employers, including your current one.

2 – Start your career change quietly

Maybe you have already tried talking to your manager, or changing other areas of your life instead of your job. But you know for sure that it’s your job at the root of your unhappiness, and it has got to go. You can look for a new job or work on a career change confidentially, without jeopardizing your current job security.

Never use your work computer, email address or other work-provided resources for your search. Schedule your research, networking and other activities for lunchtime, breaks and after work. If you’re working from home, make sure you’re available when you’re expected, and don’t get sloppy about taking off so much time that you can’t get your work accomplished.

3 – Target a career change that doesn’t require a pay cut

It’s a myth that changing careers means making less money. One policy analyst moved from non-profit to technology, so he actually made more money after switching industries. You can help your chances by targeting high-paying industries. Then, save your raise as a buffer in case of a market downturn!

Even if you’re already in a high-paying industry, a career change may still be feasible. An investment banker moving to education did give up the big banking bonuses, but she actually made the same base salary when making the switch. She was able to land a senior enough role in her new industry by focusing on transferrable skills and expertise to the new industry – something all aspiring career changers should do.

4 – Negotiate your next job offer with job security in mind

There’s a real risk of moving to a new job, and being the first-in, first-out in a downturn. Before accepting a new job, negotiate a severance package if your job is eliminated or restructured into something materially different. It doesn’t cost the company anything to guarantee your severance because they only pay for something they do (like job elimination or restructuring). Guaranteed severance clauses are typically structured so they don’t get paid out if you quit or get fired for cause.

In addition to aiming for guaranteed severance, you can improve your job security by thoroughly researching a company before you join. Is their industry growing? Is their market share within the industry growing? How strong is their financial position? How strong is the specific department you are joining?


Career risk exists whether you stay where you are or make a move

Sure, career change entails risk and discomfort. However, staying where you are still carries risk, and if you’re unhappy where you are, you’re already uncomfortable. The risk in staying put is that you still might be laid off, even if you are long tenured. Furthermore, your inertia might cause your skills to atrophy, your expertise to get outdated and your motivation to disappear – making you less competitive, once the market does improve. The best way to minimize career risk is to continually grow and challenge yourself – including stretching past your fear towards your dream career.

Acting your wage is the next viral trend emanating from TikTok after quiet quitting. According to the TikTokers, if your boss is only paying you minimum wage, that means you should just do the bare minimum amount of work.

It’s about setting boundaries. The ethos is that if the company and managers fail to offer empathy, encouragement, the compensation you deserve and psychological safety to do your job without the fear of being yelled at or abused, there is no reason to overextend yourself working and let it affect your quality of life.

Your efforts should directly match the rate of pay. According to proponents of this work style, there’s no reason to work after 5 p.m. or on weekends. While white-collar quiet quitters are just biding time, blue-collar “act your wagers” are only doing precisely what they are paid to do and nothing more.

Variations Of Quiet Quitting And Acting Your Wage Have Been Around Forever

Quiet quitting and acting your wage are nothing new. There have always been people who just coasted along. In the ‘90s, Gen-Xers were labeled as “slackers” by Baby Boomer bosses, believing that they were lazy and just coasting through the workday. During the pandemic, remote workers were accused of cyberloafing. In the 1960s counterculture movement, the Boomers were considered lazy hippies by their Greatest Generation parents. In the ‘50s, the Beat Generation was derided as “dangerous, marijuana-smoking miscreants.”

Young People Were Dealt A Bad Hand

It’s understandable, especially for young people, to be disenchanted and disengaged with work. Gen-Zers grew up in the shadow of Sept. 11. They lived through the great financial crisis, the pandemic, wars, losing their senior year of high school and a chunk of their college experience when schools sent them home, political and social upheaval, runaway inflation and high-interest rates making it nearly impossible to save money, purchase a home or lead a life anywhere near their parents’ lifestyle.

Job postings for entry-level positions require three or more years of relevant experience. Companies will extend an offer, but it’s an unpaid internship or merely a contract with a vague promise that it can turn into a permanent, full-time role.

The Acting Your Wage Mindset Is Hazardous To Your Career Health

Despite the bad hand dealt to this cohort, slow-walking your job isn’t the answer. You may temporarily feel good when you say “no” to the boss and assert your autonomy of not being forced into working long hours without any appreciation or extra compensation.

After a while, this attitude can become entrenched. It’s an “us against them” mentality. Workers will spend more time extricating themselves from working than the actual work.

You Can Do Better Than Just Scraping By

Instead of getting caught up with this tit-for-tat mentality, break the mold. You’re wasting precious time working a dead-end job that you hate. Determine what you want to do with your work life. Think of what type of job or career would make you happy and can offer a more-than-fair compensation. Then, embark upon pursuing your dreams.

You might as well start where you are now. Let the boss know that you feel overlooked and underutilized. The employer and employee can job-craft a solution to improve the situation.

The slacking can’t go on indefinitely. Either the manager will get ticked off, or the cyberloafer will get bored and either move on to another job or step up their game. Rather than coasting, show management how awesome you are by being productive. While everyone else is on cruise control, you must rev up the engine and blow past all your co-workers. It won’t be too difficult, as they don’t care.

People will start noticing you. Managers will want you on their team and projects. Promotions will come your way. Recruiters will hear about you and headhunt you for better-paying roles at other firms. Your confidence will grow, along with the skills that you’re honing. The best revenge on your boss and company is to succeed and make more money than they earn.

If you’ve tried to grow and advance within your organization to no avail, don’t default to acting your wage. Take the loss and move on. Start contacting recruiters, ask people within your network for job leads, check out job boards, go on informational interviews and acquire any new skills or credentials needed to procure the job you want.

How To Find An Act-Your-Wage Or Quiet Quitter

This cohort is not currently inclined to leave their jobs right now and don’t hate what they do for a living, but are not motivated or energized. When you are in the office, it’s easy to pick them out. They’re the ones who are looking over their shoulder to see if anyone notices them scrolling through social media instead of doing their job. They arrive at the office at the crack of 9:45 a.m., disappear for more than an hour for lunch, can’t be found when needed and sneak out the door at around 4:35 p.m.

When working remotely, it’s easier to coast. You go through the motions. The person will put in the bare minimum amount of effort to ensure they don’t get called out by the boss. They’ll work a little, then scroll through social media, maybe watch a Netflix series, call some friends, take a nap and slow roll the day away.

These folks don’t want to be fired; however, they aren’t engaged and don’t see long-term potential for growth, so there isn’t a burning need to put in a lot of effort. It’s a delicate balancing act of just working enough not to get busted. Some also choose to balance family activities, hobbies, food shopping and other nonwork-related matters during the day.

Disengaged At Work

According to a Gallup poll, only 33% of American workers are engaged in their jobs. More than 50% self-reported that they’re “just showing up” and 17% describe themselves as “actively disengaged.” These workers lack a real close connection to their job. They go through the motions. They’ll likely talk badly about a manager behind their back, gossip, spread rumors and treat customers and clients rudely. This toxic attitude could infect others and become detrimental to the company.

Cruise control could also be a result of a person feeling unappreciated, not given a voice at the table and overlooked for promotions. In this instance, it would be productive for the coaster to discuss the matter with the supervisor.

Being engaged at work is essential for the success of the individual, business and customers. If a person loves what she does for a living and derives meaning and purpose in her daily responsibilities, she’ll do a great job. Her boss, peers, subordinates and customers will appreciate her efforts and show gratitude.

Antiwork Reddit And Lying Flat In China

The r/antiwork subreddit “Unemployment For All” on Reddit has 2.2 million “idlers” who subscribe to the mission statement, boasting, “A subreddit for those who want to end work, are curious about ending work, want to get the most out of a work-free life, want more information on anti-work ideas and want personal help with their own jobs [and] work-related struggles.”

Idlers complain that they are frustrated by their jobs and bad, overbearing bosses. Other members say they aren’t inclined to search for a new job and just want to quit and stay home. The postings on the site reflect their anger and resentment. They contend that companies take advantage of them, push for longer hours than they were initially told, pay them inadequately and demean them.

Quiet quitting and acting your wage is happening in China too. As China was ramping up to take on America’s economy, tech titans in the country were celebrated. Billionaire Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, called for a tireless work ethic, on behalf of his employees, to eclipse the Americans. His work culture is known as “996.” Ma wanted everyone to work 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week.

Like the idlers on Reddit, the younger generation of Chinese workers have started to push back against Ma’s rise-and-grind culture. Gen-Z workers are accused of slacking off by refusing to work overtime, delivering medium-quality work, going to the toilet frequently and staying there for a long time, playing with their mobile phones or reading novels at work.

Not Everyone Is Slacking

In addition to the r/antiwork subreddit, there is also a large r/fatFIRE group. This crowd eschews the traditional wealth management advice of drastically cutting costs and living a frugal lifestyle to save money. The more than 325,00 members talk about ways to get rich. These motivated, success-oriented people discuss stocks, business deals, how to find high-paying jobs and other ways to make money and leave the workforce in their 30s or early 40s.

Their mantra is to “retire with a fat stash” and live off the dividends and payouts from their investments and side businesses. Many seek a cash flow of around $100,000 a year as the benchmark for calling it quits and leaving the work world. Their definition of having enough money to spend $100,000 yearly in retirement requires a portfolio of around $2.5 million.

You’d like to believe that you’ll rise to the top if you’re talented and a hard worker. However, it’s a naive way to look at your career. For most people, no one is going to come to your rescue and sweep you off into the C-suite. Instead, bosses will hold you back for their own selfish reasons.

The Boss Holds You Back Because You Do All The Work

Your supervisor knows you are a rockstar, but keeps it a secret from others within the organization, especially the top executives. Your boss purposely wants to hold you back. Secretly, the supervisor feels threatened by you.

They know that you are amazing, but can’t afford to lose you if you get a promotion and advance within the ranks. Without you, they’d be lost. The supervisor desperately needs you to make them look good. Rather than extolling your virtues and telling everyone about your accomplishments, the boss hides it.

The reality is that you’re too good at your job. If you were promoted, no one could step into your shoes. This leaves you stuck in place. The boss won’t tell you the truth because it’s cruel and unethical to keep you trapped for their benefit and to your detriment.

You Are Not Playing The Right Game

In school, you’re told that if you pay attention and work hard, you’ll get good grades. However, they don’t teach you about the real world. Working hard helps, but that’s only a tiny part of being successful. It’s not enough. You need to play the game. You need to shmooze the right people, get on the fast-track projects and make yourself known.

This means you have to get good at navigating and excelling at office politics. You need to work smart and let people know of the great work you’re doing.

It’s important to cultivate and build strategic relationships with people who can help grow your career. Seek out mentors who can show you the way, introduce you to key players within the firm and teach you how to avoid pitfalls.

Layoffs And Hiring Freezes

The current economy and job market for white-collar professionals aren’t great. On a nearly daily basis, there are announcements of layoffs, hiring freezes and job offers being rescinded. In this type of environment, you need to fend for yourself.

Everyone is trying to avoid being the person who will be let go. It’s a game of survival. Budgets are slashed. Cost cuts are commonplace. Management doesn’t have an appetite to promote and advance people. They are more focused on just keeping their heads above water. Your advancement or promotion is far down on the list of their concerns.

What You Need To Do To Turn Things Around

There are only four months left until the New Year. You have ample time to start laying the groundwork for a promotion and raise right now. Don’t wait until the last moment, as it will be too late.

You want to signal and have evidence that you are a much-needed employee. Keep meticulous track of all of your wins. Make sure that your boss is aware of what you are doing. Do this in person, as well as in writing. You want a paper trail of emails, memos, and texts citing all of the great work you’ve done. Point out the times when you exceeded expectations. Go above and beyond your responsibilities and keep your manager informed of the impact you’re making at the organization. In addition to the boss, subtly let others know of your accomplishments.

Play The Game

Go into the office regularly. With fewer workers around, you’ll stand out. Make sure that your presence is known. Chat with people in the hallways and cafeteria. Get in front of other managers, let them know what you’re up to and ask if they need any assistance.

Purposely send emails and texts and leave voicemails early in the morning, late at night and on the weekends. It may be rude, but these actions make the recipients notice that you’re working long hours and have a strong work ethic, unlike some of your co-workers who are quietly quitting.

Pop into the boss’ office to inquire what you can do to help them. Avoid fraternizing with people who tend to complain, gossip and are going nowhere fast. No matter how bad things get, always remain positive. While work-at-home attire has crossed over to the office, stand out by dressing as if you are a few levels above your station.

The Pitch For A Promotion

Before you know it, December will roll around. It’s time to capitalize on all the work you’ve done to break out and get to the next level. Put together an elevator pitch that concisely and succinctly sets forth all the great things you’ve done over the last year. Use this data to ask for a promotion, higher corporate title, a raise and larger bonus.

Be Prepared For Pushback And Go For The Jugular

Since your boss has been holding you back, there may be some resistance. If this happens, you need to be direct. Let them know that you know that they know you’re the one who’s been doing all the work. It may be uncomfortable, but call your supervisor’s bluff. Tell the boss, after all you’ve done, if a promotion, raise or bonus are not in the cards, you’ll let their manager know what’s been going on.

Say that you will start searching for a new job. Recognizing that the company is allowing attrition without replacement and hiring freezes are in effect, the manager will likely give in. They’ll realize that without you and no replacement on the horizon, management will discover that your supervisor is a fraud and has been riding your coattails for years. It’s a bold move, but sometimes you need to play hardball to get what you want to advance and succeed.

Melissa Fortunato is an FBI Special Agent and Crisis Negotiator. Over the course of her career, she’s been involved in a number of high-stakes scenarios that required her to lean heavily on the skills of negotiation. She joined Negotiate Anything to share her most exciting stories, as well as her best advice for winning in everyday negotiations.

The Importance of a Full Assessment

Prior to entering a negotiation, it’s important to complete a full assessment of your counterpart. This may require more time than expected, but the outcomes will be worth it. Fortunato shared how she once went so far as to “marry” her undercover colleague just to get closer to a group of targets. She invested the time (months legitimizing her cover) which then presented a perfect opportunity for building connections: a wedding.

For Fortunato, conducting a full assessment meant finding strategic ways to connect with the targets in order to learn more about them. For the everyday negotiator, this can mean adding a little more time to the preparation phase of your strategy, as well as making calls to find out more about your counterpart. These calls could be to former employers, former partner organizations or other associates. While it may feel uncomfortable at first, entering a negotiation with a complete picture of your opponent will make it all worth it.

Diversity As a Strategic Asset

While diversity should certainly be prioritized from a human rights perspective, we can’t overlook its role in a strong negotiation strategy. Diversity means a wider variety of backgrounds, strengths and opinions. This increases the odds of making a connection.

Every person is different, which means every counterpart will bring a different set of experiences, beliefs and emotional triggers to the table. The more diverse your team is, the more likely you are to make a connection. Connection is the foundation of strong negotiations.

“In any kind of negotiation, take advantage of all chances you get to make a connection,” Fortunato explains.

 

Prioritizing Empathy

While it may seem counterintuitive to some, empathy is the key to building strong connections and resolving complex negotiations. In one scenario, Fortunato was negotiating with a target who had shot a police officer and fled the scene. After a 15-hour barricade standoff, it was clear their current tactics were failing, so she decided to soften her approach. This slight shift in tone encouraged the target to engage with her while SWAT positioned themselves for the arrest.

While gender dynamics can be leveraged in certain situations, empathy should not be limited to women. Everybody has the potential to learn and build empathy in negotiations; all it requires is a simple shift in approach. Always be willing to forgo some of your original points if it’s clear the conversation is not moving in a positive direction and don’t hesitate to bring a new person into the conversation.

“There’s a strength in being able to see another person’s perspective and adjust your stance,” Fortunato shared.

 

Ask Questions Without Fear

Fortunato shared a personal story about a time in her life when her daughter was hospitalized but she found herself too afraid to ask the doctors important questions. She’s not alone in this experience. Many people hesitate to ask questions out of fear of looking “stupid.”

The truth is, not only will asking questions give you access to more information, but it also makes you look more engaged, intentional and thoughtful. Your counterpart will regard you as somebody who pays attention and is interested in what they have to say. This will level-up connections and strengthen your approach.

Just Listen

Fortunato wrapped up with an important reminder for listeners: as intimidating as negotiations can be (especially in her line of work) it all comes down to human interaction. Successful negotiations rely on listening and understanding, as most humans just want to be heard. If somebody feels they are being listened to, they are more likely to switch their position.

Consider this: with all of the power and artillery the FBI has to help manage crises, why would they continue to prioritize connection through expert negotiators?

“Because it works,” Fortunato shared.

The pandemic has changed workers’ professional expectations for the foreseeable future. According to Randstad’s latest Workmonitor Survey, employees feel empowered in new ways as they reassess their careers and the role of work in their lives. A stunning 81% of those surveyed say they have gained more clarity around their personal and professional goals over the last 12 to 18 months. As a result, they desire more training, work-life balance and, in many cases, a different career.

The thought of changing your career path may seem scary, especially if you are over 40. But it is not uncommon or impossible. In fact, the average American worker has 12 jobs in their lifetime with an average tenure of around four years with a single employer. Given the current hectic environment, flexibility, fulfillment, and work-life balance are taking center stage. That means more people are thinking about pivoting professionally.

The good news—the majority of older career changers are successful, based on a study from the American Institute for Economic Research. Changing your career path doesn’t have to be as overwhelming or difficult as you might think. These ten steps will give you the framework you need to come out on top.

1.      Upgrade your mindset

Ultimately, what you think, you become. Altering your career path means being open to the possibilities. Change your self-talk so that you can move forward despite your fears. Even simple mantras like “I can do this” or “I am fearless” really work.

2.      Take money off the table

One of the most common excuses for not changing career paths is money. Some common phrases are, “I can’t afford to change careers,” “I’m the main breadwinner, so I can’t take the risk,” or “What if I fail?” Of course, there are no guarantees in life. But who’s to say that you can’t earn a higher salary in your new career? It may not happen overnight, but it’s possible. Think of changing jobs as a calculated risk. If you plan for it, it will come.

3.      Focus on transferrable skills

Another common misconception is that changing career paths means starting from the bottom. Wrong! You already have an enormous number of transferrable skills. For example, if you are a lawyer, you have writing, speaking and research skills. As a marketer, you understand customer lifecycles and personas. Or maybe you are an accountant who is great with numbers and reporting. All of these are assets that can be valuable in almost any profession.

4.      Consider your why

Think about why you want to change your career path. Don’t change careers because you were passed over for a promotion or hate your boss. Make sure you are running towards something instead of running away from something. Let faith, not fear, drive your decision-making process.

5.      Identify the sweet spot

Find the intersection of the things that you enjoy and are good at. That’s the sweet spot. This exercise will help guide you towards career possibilities that align with your values and interests.

6.      Brainstorm new career paths

Make an exhaustive list of potential career paths. Keep an open mind! Defer judgment and try to have fun with this exercise. You can even throw an “idea party” where you invite friends to brainstorm different options.

7.      Research your new career path

Find people in the career you are interested in and ask them for their advice. That way, you can learn first-hand what it’s like to work in that field. You can also do research online and join professional organizations that will allow you to expand your network.

8.      Acquire new skills

Find out whether your new career path requires additional education or certifications. You could consider taking online courses or even find webinars, books and podcasts to hone your skillset. Think about how you learn best, and then set specific training and development goals.

9.      Test the waters

Try shadowing someone in your chosen profession. Create a side hustle that you can focus on in your spare time. You may even consider volunteering or working part-time to understand whether this new path may be the right fit.

10.  Develop an action plan

Once you’ve decided on a chosen career path, create an action plan. Your plan should include short and long-term goals along with specific milestones to hold you accountable. Think about how long it will take you to transition from where you are now to the new life you want to lead.

It’s never too late to change your career path. Whether you are in your 40’s or your 60’s, you can do it. The key is to have a plan and stick to it. Be fearless. Making a career change can be scary. But you know what’s even scarier? Regret.
