#YourCareer : How To Advance Your Career Within Your Current Company. Question: Do You Know How?

January 22, 2025/in First Sun Blog, FSC Career Modules/by First Sun Team

Career stagnation can leave you feeling trapped and unfulfilled in your current role. This sense of professional inertia can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only your job performance but also overall well-being. However, the solution may lie closer than you realize—within your current company.

The phenomenon of feeling “stuck” in your career is characterized by a nagging sense of dissatisfaction, a lack of growth opportunities and a creeping fear that your professional trajectory has plateaued prematurely. This state of career limbo can lead to decreased productivity, diminished job satisfaction and even contribute to broader mental health concerns if left unaddressed.

While the instinct might be to seek greener pastures elsewhere, internal mobility and growth opportunities within one’s current company are often overlooked. By exploring avenues for progression and skill development in-house, you may find renewed purpose and momentum in your career without the upheaval of changing employers.

Steps To Take For Your Career Path Forward

When looking to strategically reposition yourself within your current organization, you will want to uncover your unique value proposition and identify areas where you can make more impactful contributions.

You can achieve this through a thorough self-assessment of your skills, interests and values. This introspection, coupled with a strategic approach toward internal career opportunities that align with your strengths, can lead to renewed job satisfaction and career progression.

It is imperative that you share your professional development plans with your manager and human resources. When discussing alternative internal paths, frame the conversation as a collaborative opportunity that’s a win-win for both you and the organization.

Communicate your commitment to the company by expressing genuine enthusiasm for its mission, products and the workplace culture, while simultaneously demonstrating your ambition to contribute more meaningfully.

Articulate how your potential role transition would fill existing skill gaps, bring fresh perspectives to different departments and showcase the company’s internal mobility and talent development capabilities, which could lead to increased retention.

Additionally, cultivating a relationship with a mentor or sponsor within your organization can be transformative. These experienced professionals can offer career guidance, insider perspectives on company dynamics and potential advocacy for your professional advancement.

Build other connections within your organization by networking with colleagues from various departments to gain insights into their roles, responsibilities and the challenges they face. Consider requesting to shadow a co-worker to explore how your expertise might be beneficial to their team.

To maximize your career potential within the organization, it’s important to stay proactive and regularly check internal job listings for new positions and keep informed about career advancement programs through company bulletins and newsletters.

Making the most of career coaching and other developmental resources, such as workshops and training programs, offered by your company will equip you with the skills needed to advance your career effectively, as well as help you stay competitive in your industry.

Lastly, take on extra responsibilities and projects to demonstrate your value and enhance your visibility within the organization. Keep a record of your achievements and quantify the impact you’ve made on the company. Most importantly, make sure to proactively communicate your successes to your manager and the leadership team.

#JobChange : Before You Quit That Unsatisfying Job, Make These 3 Changes First. Trends for 2025 Point to a Cooling Job Market. Great REad!

December 31, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Job market trends for 2025 point to a cooling job market. When hiring slows down, you need to play good defense against an unnecessarily difficult job search. For this design professional, leaving an otherwise “fine” job to “try something new” is unnecessarily risky.

There are other ways to improve your work situation that are less disruptive than quitting your job. Here are three changes you can try first:

1. Change Your Life Outside Of Work

Maybe this design professional wants to try something new to advance their career, learn something, or just satisfy a curiosity. You can advance your career outside your job with activities that raise your visibility and stretch your comfort zone. You can pick up new skills by taking a course or volunteering in a different capacity from your day job. Satisfy your curiosity for free by attending meetups or reading books around a new topic.

Even if you decide to quit your job later, your new activities will give you things to talk about in networking meetings and interviews. If you’re trying to make a career pivot, having hands-on experience in your new target field will make you a stronger candidate. You may find that doing something new outside of work is enough, and you don’t want to quit your job after all.

2. Change Your Job Without Quitting

A lateral move within the same company is when you move from your current department to another one, or switch offices if your company has multiple locations or change from line of business to another if your company offers multiple products or services. You get the benefit of doing something new, but without losing the tenure at your current company. Some companies encourage or even expect employees to work across different areas, so moving laterally may be an easier switch than finding a new job at another company.

If you can’t or don’t want to make a lateral move, you can still change your job without quitting by talking to your manager about switching up your responsibilities. Check if there are cross-functional projects that need your expertise so you can flex existing skills in a new way and with different colleagues. If your company has employee resource groups, getting involved in these is an opportunity to meet new people and work on new initiatives.

3. Change Your Mindset From Leaving To Arriving

When you find your current job unsatisfying, it’s tempting to fantasize about something better elsewhere. However, that mindset is focused on leaving – you’re leaving the boredom, the negative work environment, the poor pay or whatever grievance you have with where you are. Instead, focus on arriving somewhere specific – i.e., an industry more aligned with your interests, a company culture aligned to your values, compensation at [insert specific number here].

By changing your mindset to focus on where you’re going, you make empowered choices. You’re not just running away from something negative; you’re aiming for better. If you actually do leave your job, changing your mindset to focus on the future will make you a more attractive candidate. Prospective employers want candidates who want to join them, not just escape wherever they are.

#JobInterview : Why Gen Z Should Leave Their Helicopter Parents Out Of The Job Interview Process. Overreliance on Parental Support is a Red Flag. Thoughts?

December 13, 2024/in First Sun Blog, FSC Career Modules/by First Sun Team

Gen Z, who are often maligned as being “lazy” or “difficult in the workplace,” entered adulthood during unprecedented times, facing a global pandemic, economic uncertainty and rapid technological change.  As a result of the difficult circumstances they have inherited—rather than a lack of ambition—a recent report from the American Staffing Association found that nearly 37% of Gen Z workers worry about job security.

This generation, along with their Millennial cohort, pursued four-year degrees, only to face significant hurdles upon graduation. The average Gen Z college graduate carries approximately $16,000 in debt. This financial burden limits these young adults’ career choices and hinders their ability to achieve traditional milestones like homeownership.  The rise of artificial intelligence has further complicated the job market for this Gen Z. While they are tech-savvy, the increasing automation of routine tasks makes it challenging for companies to justify hiring full-time employees for entry-level positions.

Considering the significant challenges they face, it’s understandable that Gen Z may require additional support, particularly when compared to older generations that had greater opportunities. However, the phenomenon of “helicopter parents” in Gen Z’s upbringing has intensified parental involvement to an unprecedented degree.

How Involved Are The Parents Of Gen Z?

A 2024 survey by Resume Templates unveiled a surprising trend: 70% of Gen Z job seekers rely on their parents for assistance during the job search process—from writing résumés and cover letters to applying for jobs. Even more striking, Gen Zers reported involving their parents in job interviews, with some parents joining in-person or virtual meetings and even speaking directly to hiring managers.

Finding A Job

Among the Gen Z respondents surveyed, 60% indicated that they seek their parents’ help in sourcing job opportunities, utilizing online resources, personal connections, networking and career fairs.

Writing Résumés And Cover Letters

Additionally, most of these young adults are receiving assistance with their résumés. Over the past year, 55% of Gen Z respondents have sought their parents’ help for proofreading and editing their résumés, while nearly a quarter had their parents write the entire document for them. Almost half (49%) of this group also requested parental aid with their cover letters as well.

Submitting Job Applications

Once their résumés were prepared for submission, 24% of Gen Zers said that their parents submitted their job applications on their behalf. If they made it to the initial screening by the human resources department, 13% admitted that they had their parents complete the call, citing not knowing how to communicate with hiring managers, a lack of motivation and their mental health.

Attending Interviews And Speaking To Hiring Managers

Beyond the introductory screening, Gen Zers are allowing their parents to have a physical dominance and presence in their job interviews, with 26% indicating that they have gone to the interview with at least one parent. Within this group, 31% had a parent attend an in-person interview with them, while 29% had a parent participate in a virtual interview.

Among those who had a parent present at an in-person interview, 37% reported that their parent accompanied them to the office, while 26% said their parent physically sat in the interview room, introducing themselves and even answering questions during the meeting.

Among those who participated in virtual interviews, 29% indicated that their parents were visible. The majority of the parents who appeared on camera communicated directly with the hiring manager and provided information to their children during the interview.

Throughout the interview process, 36% of Gen Z respondents said they asked their parents to help draft correspondence with hiring managers, from editing messages, to writing them entirely and directly communicating with the hiring professionals.

How Parents May Be Hindering The Job Search Process

While an overwhelming 83% of Gen Z job seekers credit their parents for their success in finding employment, this intense level of parental involvement raises significant concerns among employers about the autonomy and professional readiness of these young candidates.

Hiring managers may see it as a red flag that conveys a lack of independence and professional maturity in the Gen Z candidates. The perception that a job seeker needs their parents to “fight their battles” suggests an inability to navigate the corporate world independently, which could potentially hinder their chances of getting a new job or advancing in their career.

This overreliance on parental support may inadvertently signal to employers that the candidate lacks the essential soft skills and self-reliance needed in today’s competitive job market.

Moreover, this approach to job hunting deprives young workers of valuable learning experiences that are critical for their professional growth. By not engaging directly in the application and interview processes, Gen Z candidates miss out on opportunities to develop practical knowledge and skills essential for their careers.

This lack of hands-on experience may result in reduced motivation and preparedness for the job requirements and tasks at hand.

Job Search Advice For Gen Z

Gen Zers must strike a balance between seeking assistance and maintaining independence. While parental advice can be valuable, especially in résumé preparation and interview practice, it’s important for candidates to take ownership of their own job search.

Instead of relying solely on parents, Gen Z can build a robust professional support network comprising college alumni, mentors, recruiters and career coaches. This creates a more professional and strategic support system that can provide valuable insights and guidance, while helping young professionals develop their own career management skills.

To acquire some real-world experience, they can pursue internships, volunteer opportunities or freelance work. These avenues not only provide practical skills, but also strengthen their résumés, making them more competitive in the job market.

Gen Z job seekers should prioritize utilizing job networking platforms, such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Handshake, which 78% of their peers consider their primary resource for job searching. These sites not only streamline the application process, but can also connect them with potential employers.

Lastly, Gen Zers should make the most of on-campus career fairs, as face-to-face interactions are still highly valued in the recruitment process.

#JobSearch : Writing the Dreaded Cover Letter. Covers Letters with Your Resume, will Separate You from the Pack!

December 10, 2024/in First Sun Blog, FSC Career Modules/by First Sun Team

While the requirements of supplying cover letters are waning in the digital world of employment tasking for most hiring companies, about 5-8% of potential employers may still ask for this communication. The Automatic Tracking System (ATS) may not enable the upload of a cover sheet in the application process. The recruiter may want an example of the job seeker’s ability to write a brief and persuasive letter that grabs the recruiter’s attention before they read the resume.

Some grown-ups cower in fear of writing this simple communication or have no clue where to start.  Simply remember the rule of threes for an easy way to create the letter.  You want three (3) paragraphs, with at least three (3) sentences each, and you need to provide at least three (3) pieces of vital information in each paragraph.  The cover letter should run more than one page. For the best results, ensure the sentences do not start with “I” to avoid looking self-centered.

The three main paragraphs can be broken down easily into further components:

The first paragraph lets the recipient know why you are targeting that employer, why they should be interested in your skills and experiences, and/or who you might know in the company. The first sentence demonstrates what job requisition … “I am applying for the job published on (where you found it) for (job title, with ID # if provided).

The second point is you are demonstrating what type of research you have performed on the company to familiarize yourself with what they do, sell, or manufacture, and what standing they have in the industry … “Your three-time, award-winning widget attracted my attention because my class studied the mechanics and robotic technology of your widget in college, which was considered cutting edge at that time.”

The third point may relate to your experience and background … “Your website notes you have obtained recent government contracts (if you know the ID#, plug them in here) for the Department of Defense.  This contract does call for some entry-level widget building positions, for which I am qualified.”

You can note the name of a current employee who referred you to the position “Ms. Jamie Smith (job title, office location) noted she would follow up with you (hiring manager or human resources POC) to ensure you received and reviewed my resume.” (Some companies provide employee referral bonuses, so finding a Point of Contact on LinkedIn might offer an advantage if they can refer your resume to earn a hiring bonus. Check the company website for benefits and look for employee referral bonuses on the bulleted listing.)

The second paragraph should illustrate some transferable skill or experience that has not been fully illustrated in the actual resume or education that may not be directly related but has provided training that could transfer into the job field.  If you can write three explanatory sentences in an interesting manner, those points could be what gets your resume in front of a hiring manager.  “I earned a Scout Badge for Robotics in high school and participated in a nationwide robotics contest for building widgets, for which my team earned third place in college.  Later, I used those skills as a volunteer worker to build a functional widget for (name a tool), which was used in a (situation), enabling (for example) disabled soldiers in the Wounded Warrior program to more quickly acclimate to their prosthetics.  While my background and experience do not show much work experience directly related to building widgets, my volunteer experience, skills, and education support my capability to understand and learn quickly within the field.”

The third paragraph should also provide three vital points – 1) point of contact information (cell phone and email address), 2) dates and times of availability (example: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday or 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., weekends), and 3) noting a willingness to be present for a telephonic interview or a face-to-face interview at the hiring manager’s schedule and convenience.

And, of course, your signature should be short and sweet – “Respectfully, Your Name.”  You can scan your signature and paste the scanned graphic into the letter if you send it digitally, but it’s not required.

Using the three principles of the cover letter, these guidelines should easily provide the recruiter or hiring manager sufficient information and intrigue to pick up the phone or enter your email address on their keyboard for further consideration of your skill sets.

#JobInterview : 5 Questions To Ask A Hiring Manager In A Job Interview. Failing to Ask These Questions are Big Mistake!

December 3, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Job candidates frequently experience anxiety over what questions to ask during interviews—a concern that can significantly impact their performance. However, thorough preparation can ease this stress and empower candidates to engage more confidently with hiring managers.

This involves examining the LinkedIn profiles of interviewers to grasp their backgrounds and roles within the company. Additionally, it’s important to thoroughly understand the job description, as this allows you to connect your skills and experiences with the specific requirements of the role.

By researching the company, candidates can formulate informed questions that not only demonstrate their interest but also help them assess whether the organization aligns with their career goals. This transforms the interview from a nerve-wracking experience into a valuable dialogue.

Interviewing With The Hiring Manager

Meeting with a hiring manager is a critical component of the interview process, as it provides unique insights and opportunities that other stages of recruitment cannot offer. Hiring managers—typically senior employees or department heads—possess an intimate understanding of the role’s requirements and how it fits into the broader organizational structure. Their expertise allows them to assess not only a candidate’s technical skills, but also their potential for long-term contribution to the company’s mission.

This conversation with the hiring manager enables candidates to showcase their qualifications, communication skills and cultural fit in a way that résumés and initial screenings cannot fully capture. They are often responsible for building high-performing teams, making their evaluation of a candidate’s ability to work effectively with others crucial.

Moreover, asking a hiring manager insightful questions during an interview can uncover vital details about the company’s culture, team dynamics and growth opportunities, all of which are essential for making an informed decision about your potential future with the organization. Candidates can gain a deeper understanding of how well they might integrate into the workplace and whether the company’s values match up with their own.

5 Questions To Consider Asking A Hiring Manager

Posing these thoughtful questions during a job interview demonstrates your enthusiasm and allows you to collect important information about the company, which you can leverage to reinforce your value.

1. “Can you describe the team I would be working with and how collaboration is encouraged?”

This question conveys your genuine interest in the team dynamics and collaborative environment. It shows that you value teamwork and are proactively considering how you might integrate into the existing company culture. By asking about collaboration methods, you indicate that you prioritize effective communication and cooperative problem-solving, which are crucial soft skills in the workplace.

This question also suggests that you are thinking strategically about your potential role within the team and how you can contribute to its success. It reflects your awareness of the importance of a positive work environment and your desire to understand the company’s approach to fostering teamwork. By asking this question, you position yourself as a candidate who not only values teamwork but also seeks to align with the company’s collaborative culture, which is likely to impress the hiring manager.

2. “What are the key objectives for this role in the first six months?”

By asking a hiring manager this question, it signals to them that you are proactive and focused on understanding the immediate expectations and priorities associated with the position.

This question demonstrates your eagerness and commitment to making a meaningful contribution from the outset. It lets the hiring manager know that you are results-oriented and interested in understanding how success is measured within the role, which can help you tailor your approach to meet or exceed these benchmarks.

3. “What does the company do to support employee growth and career advancement?”

If you want to demonstrate that you are focused on long-term career development and are interested in opportunities for professional growth within the organization, then be sure to ask this question. It shows that you value continuous learning and are proactive about mapping your career trajectory. Notably, it indicates that you are looking for a workplace that invests in its employees’ futures, which can enhance job satisfaction and retention.

By inquiring about support for career advancement, you show that you are motivated to enhance your skills, take on new challenges and align your personal goals with the company’s objectives. Additionally, this question reflects your desire to contribute meaningfully to the organization, as employees who feel supported in their growth are often more engaged and productive.

4. “What are the biggest challenges someone in this position might face on a daily basis?”

This question highlights your willingness to understand and prepare for potential difficulties, showing that you are not only interested in the positive aspects of the job but also in its complexities and demands. It indicates that you possess a problem-solving mindset and are eager to learn about the hurdles you might encounter, which can help you assess your ability to handle them effectively.

Moreover, this inquiry reflects your consideration for the specific needs of the role, suggesting that you are thoughtful about how you can contribute to overcoming these challenges. By asking this question, you show that you are committed to understanding the full scope of the position—warts and all.

5. “What tools or technologies will I be using regularly?”

This question showcases your interest in the day-to-day operations and your readiness to engage with the specific technical aspects of the job. It indicates that you are proactive about preparing yourself to effectively utilize the tools and technologies necessary for success in the position. Additionally, by seeking this information, you show that you are considering how your existing skills align with the company’s technological infrastructure and are open to learning new tools if needed.

Your commitment to ensuring a smooth transition into the role will shine through, and will position you as someone who will come in and hit the ground running.

Failing to Ask These Questions are Big Mistake!

#JobInterview : How To Bluff Your Way To Landing A Job If You’re Underqualified. What to Do & What NOT to Do. Great Read!

November 25, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

In today’s fiercely competitive job market, securing interviews and landing desirable positions has become increasingly challenging, especially when facing high employer expectations. However, even as a long-shot candidate lacking all the required experiences, hope is not lost.

When navigating the hiring landscape, job seekers must strategically present their unique value proposition beyond rigid job requirements. By emphasizing adaptable skills, professional potential and a demonstrated capacity to learn, candidates can effectively transcend traditional qualification boundaries.

The key is to articulate how your diverse experiences and inherent capabilities align with an employer’s core needs, transforming apparent limitations into compelling opportunities for professional contribution and growth.

What Not To Do

During the hiring process, exaggeration has become a common tactic among both job seekers and employers.

A 2020 survey conducted by Harver (formerly Checkster), a reference checking company, revealed that nearly 80% of job candidates who applied for or received a job offer admitted to either having misrepresented themselves or considering doing so on their applications.

The study, which gathered responses from 400 job applicants and 400 hiring managers, recruiters and human resources professionals, identified common falsehoods candidates consider telling. These include claiming proficiency in skills they seldom use (60%), extending their tenure at a company to omit another employer (50%), inflating their GPA by more than half a point (49%), exaggerating their job title from manager to director (41%) and falsely claiming to have earned a degree from a prestigious university (40%).

Similarly, companies often enhance job descriptions to appear more appealing than they actually are. Human resources, recruiters and hiring managers frequently make vague promises about promotions and salary increases, which are often not fulfilled.

These misleading representations ultimately damage trust and create mutual disappointment, as both employers and candidates feel deceived by the disconnect between promised opportunities and actual workplace realities.

Strategic Positioning

If you don’t meet all the qualifications for a position, the most effective strategy is to shift the emphasis to your real talents. Focus intently on articulating your professional strengths, demonstrating your inherent potential and conveying your commitment to continuous learning.

Transparency about your current skill set, coupled with a compelling narrative of adaptability and rapid skill acquisition, can be far more persuasive than attempting to conceal gaps in your experience.

By candidly acknowledging areas where you may lack specific qualifications and simultaneously expressing enthusiasm for professional growth, you transform potential limitations into opportunities for development. This approach signals to employers not just what you currently know, but your capacity to evolve, learn quickly and add value to their organization.

Prior to the interview, research the company thoroughly and prepare thoughtful questions that demonstrate your interest and understanding of the role. Emphasize your transferable skills and how they can be applied to the position.

Consider creating tailored work samples that showcase your abilities and fit for the specific role. Additionally, highlight any unique perspectives or experiences you bring that show you would be an asset to the team.

How To Beat Out A More Qualified Person

You can win over hiring professionals with your drive, passion and motivation. Demonstrating enthusiasm and confidence during a job interview is crucial for making a positive impression. Often, a less qualified candidate who displays high energy and eagerness can outshine a more qualified individual who appears disinterested and uncommunicative.

Some candidates may come across as overly self-assured and condescending toward interviewers, speaking more than they listen. You can gain a competitive edge by practicing active listening. Show genuine interest by asking insightful questions about the company and its culture, which indicates that you have done your research and are emotionally invested in the role.

Your body language can convey a lot about your self-esteem and zeal. Maintain good posture, make direct eye contact and smile genuinely. Lean slightly forward to show engagement, and avoid crossing your arms, which can appear defensive.

Share your passion for the role and the industry by discussing what excites you about the job. Utilize energetic language to convey your eagerness for contributing to and growing with the company. Steer clear of uncertain phrases such as “I think” or “maybe.”

Adopt the mindset that you’ve already secured the position and approach the conversation with that level of confidence—without coming across as arrogant. Incorporate language that assumes the close and you’ve already been selected for an offer. For instance, you might ask, “What steps can I take to surpass expectations in this position?”

#JobSearch : How To Overcome The Perception Of Being ‘Overqualified’ For The Job. Must Recognize the Bias Over Experienced Workers. A MUst REad!

November 22, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Securing a white-collar job can be challenging, and the difficulty intensifies for seasoned professionals with extensive career experience.

Logically, one might assume that companies would eagerly embrace candidates boasting multiple decades of accumulated expertise and knowledge. However, what might initially appear as a hiring asset can actually become a significant obstacle in the interview process, as many hiring managers demonstrate a surprising reluctance to engage with highly experienced job seekers.

Despite the wealth of skills and insights such candidates bring, these decision-makers frequently dismiss them, categorizing them as “overqualified” and overlooking their potential value to the organization.

A candidate is considered overqualified when their professional capabilities and background substantially surpass the requirements of a specific role. There is a substantial mismatch between their expertise and the job’s expectations, and accepting the position would look like a career stagnation—or worse, regression—rather than advancement.

When this happens, employers are concerned that candidates with extensive qualifications may quickly become disengaged and restless, feeling constrained by limited responsibilities, and may actively pursue more challenging opportunities or negotiate for higher compensation.

The Bias Against ‘Overqualified’ Candidates

When a highly experienced candidate’s application lands before a recruiter or human resources professional, it often triggers skepticism about their motivations for pursuing a seemingly less advanced role, reflecting a deep-seated bias that exists within the hiring process.

HR tends to view with suspicion the idea of a highly accomplished individual, who has attained significant career success and financial rewards, willingly accepting a position that appears to be a step down. This concept runs counter to the typical mindset of an ambitious career professional.

Hiring managers are often convinced that there must be an underlying issue prompting such a move. They speculate whether the candidate has experienced a career setback, reached their maximum level of competence or is simply seeking a less demanding role.

Perceived As A Threat

Hiring managers often approach senior, highly experienced applicants with caution, particularly when these candidates might eclipse younger leadership. There’s apprehension about potential scenarios where the overqualified candidate could disrupt team dynamics, challenge existing processes or ultimately seek to advance beyond their current role.

A perception exists that such accomplished candidates might exhibit arrogance or prove challenging to manage. Intertwined with this concern is a subtle element of envy and a perverse satisfaction in rejecting someone who has already achieved significant career success.

Additionally, there’s an underlying concern that these candidates might view the position merely as a temporary stepping stone, with intentions to either quickly move up or leave once a more suitable opportunity arises.

These attitudes stem from the interplay of professional insecurities and personal prejudices. Younger managers may fear being overshadowed or possibly replaced, while organizations worry about employee retention, the costs associated with training and the potential for salary negotiations.

Money Matters

While highly experienced candidates might initially express willingness to accept lower compensation, employers often harbor doubts about how quickly this stance may change. There’s a concern that once these individuals become firmly established in their roles, taking on crucial responsibilities and integrating themselves deeply into the organization, they may leverage their newfound importance to negotiate for higher pay and elevated job titles.

This scenario potentially puts management in a difficult position. They may feel compelled to meet these demands to retain a now-valuable employee, risking their departure if they refuse. However, acquiescing to such requests could create discord among other team members, who might feel deceived and resentful toward the employee who seemingly entered the organization under different pretenses.

How To Still Get The Job

Overqualified job seekers can effectively address employers’ concerns by positioning themselves as valuable, growth-oriented candidates who are genuinely excited about the opportunity to learn and contribute in a new role.

First, start by clearly communicating your motivations for applying to the position. Explain how the role aligns with your career goals and why you’re excited about the opportunity to gain new experiences or knowledge at this specific company or in this particular industry.

Focus on how your existing skills can be applied in new ways within the role. Demonstrate how your diverse experience can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to challenges the company may face.

Highlight your ability to adapt to new environments and your enthusiasm for continuous learning. Share specific examples from past roles where you successfully adjusted to new situations or acquired new skills, even with prior experience, to show that you’re open to growth and not set in your ways.

Address potential concerns about retention by discussing your interest in long-term projects and continuous learning within the organization. Emphasize your desire to grow with the company and contribute to its success over time.

Express your willingness to mentor junior team members and share your expertise. This will convey that you’re not just focused on your own professional advancement, but also on contributing to the development of others within the organization.

Show that you’re open to learning from colleagues at all levels and that you value collaborative work environments. This can help alleviate concerns about potential arrogance or difficulty in adjusting to team dynamics.

#JobSearch : Top Job Interview Mistakes That Can Cost You The Job. Great Read Before Your Next Job Interview.

November 13, 2024/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Your resume worked and got you a highly coveted job interview. You’re a strong candidate, excited and hopeful. Then to your ultimate disappointment, you don’t get a job offer. Sarah found herself in this situation.

She was a sales manager who had recently lost her job. Frustrated by her lack of success, she called for interview coaching. Sarah began our conversation by saying, “I’m in sales, but it seems I can’t sell myself. I must be making a major mistake because I’m not being hired. I have all the job qualifications, so I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve lost out on three jobs now, so I’m doing something to turn off the employers. What can it be?”

Many others also face this scenario. They don’t know what they might be saying that prevents them from not getting hired. As I began my interview coaching session with Sarah, it became crystal clear that there were some significant mistakes she needed to correct to change the outcome to land the next job.

Avoid Making The Following Mistakes

You need to avoid making the following mistakes.

1. Fail when answering tough interview questions

When you are under the spotlight, people often give a poor answer that sends the message to the employer that you are the wrong person for the job. You don’t want to get tripped up by these typical but difficult questions. Advanced preparation is the key to handling them like a pro and building the employer’s confidence in your job performance.

List the questions you’ll likely be asked and write your answers. Are you saying something that can make them question whether you might have problems with the work or interacting with others? When you are happy with the response, practice recording yourself answering each one. Listen to the playback. Refine the answer until you are satisfied with how you’ll respond.

Prepare answers to questions like:

  • Tell us about a big mistake you recently made.
  • What is your greatest accomplishment?
  • Explain what you like most about your current/last job, and what did you like least?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • What is your current salary?
  • And, of course, the dreaded, “What is your greatest weakness?

All job hunters seem to cringe when they hear this weakness question. Yes, this is a super tough one. My Forbes article, “A New Way To Answer The ‘What’s Your Greatest Weakness?’ Interview Question” will guide you in developing the perfect answer.

2. Stumbled with situational questions

This probing style of questioning is how most candidates make mistakes. It’s designed so the employer can assess how you have performed in the past and also assume you’ll do the same if you work for them. Your answers are very revealing and help the employer make a better, unbiased decision.

Job hunters find situational questions challenging to answer. They skip early details that make the story harder to follow. They fail to paint a clear picture of the situation, leaving out specific details and critical information. This confuses the hiring manager, who gets stuck wondering where this happened or who was involved. By not being detailed and specific upfront the employer often doesn’t catch the rest of your answer.

As you craft your answer, begin the story defining where this happened. For example, “While I was the Director at Mount Vernon Health,” then name and explain who the players are, clearly noting the problem or issue. You would continue saying, “My project manager, Mary, made a costly mistake on the project budget.” Next, show what you did and how you resolved the problem. These upfront details are precise and allow the listener to comprehend your actions. Your work stories should be concise and last no more than 60 seconds.

For examples of creating effective answers to situational questions, read my Forbes article “Ace Your Next Interview Using the STAR Method.”

3. Weak opening

Don’t assume the employer has read your resume thoroughly and carefully when you begin the interview. Many times, they just skim it. As important as this meeting is to you, the employer often shows up distracted, preoccupied, and not paying complete attention at the start. They could be thinking about other work that needs to be done, an employee problem, the last candidate they met, family issues, etc.

In order to grab their attention in those first two minutes, you need a powerful opening to the “tell us about yourself” request. You quickly achieve that goal by using a technique I call the 60 Second Sell. This strategic elevator pitch highlights your top skills, accomplishments, and credentials demonstrating how you would excel performing their job.

Customize your answer to address the employer’s needs. Identify your top five top selling points, link them together in a couple of sentences, and you have your 60 Second Sell. This response will get the interview off to a flying start. For a few examples, read my Forbes article “Best Way to Open An Interview To Secure A Job Offer.”

4. No close

When the employer has finished answering all their questions, and you have asked yours, most job hunters say goodbye. That’s a missed opportunity to sell yourself. Assume that the employer may only recall a little about you. We want your top accomplishments, skills, and strengths to be at the forefront of their mind with a fine-tuned closing that ensures that you are perfect for the job.

To conclude say, “Thank you for the opportunity to learn about your position. I’m very interested in this job. In closing, let me summarize what I bring to the position,” and continue making your four or five key points. Then say goodbye. After you leave, the employer fills out a form evaluating the candidate. The last thing they heard were the top reasons to hire you.

#ResumeWriting : How Specific Words On Women’s Résumés May Be Holding Them Back, According To Research. Avoiding Certain Words could Improve your Chances of Being Hired.

October 16, 2024/in First Sun Blog, Resume/Cover Letter/by First Sun Team

New research reveals that specific language on women’s résumés may impact their hiring prospects, particularly for jobs in male-dominated fields. The studies suggest that avoiding certain words could improve women’s chances of being hired.

The recent studies, published in the Journal of Business and Psychology, analyzed more than 2,500 résumés posted on Indeed.com. The résumés focused on six distinct professions—some male-dominated, others female-dominated. Researchers examined how often the résumés included what they call “communal” and “agentic” language. Communal words, typically linked to women, emphasized relationship-oriented traits such as helpful, interpersonal, and caring. In contrast, agentic words—more often associated with men—highlighted qualities like assertiveness, confidence, and ambition.

The researchers found that women used more communal words than men in their résumés, regardless of the type of job they were applying for. Interestingly, men and women did not differ in the number of agentic words on their résumés.

To further explore the impact of using these more feminine words, the researchers conducted an additional study. They crafted fictional résumés, mirroring the levels of communal language found in the real résumés, to assess how this language influenced hiring evaluations.

The researchers then asked 346 participants, all of whom were full-time employees with most having hiring experience, to evaluate the fictional job applicants. They asked how likely they would be to hire the candidate and whether the candidate showed leadership potential. Half of the participants were told they were hiring for a human resources position, a job typically held by women, and half were told they were hiring for an IT manager, a job typically held by men.

The researchers found that women applying for the IT manager position were penalized for using communal language in their résumés. These women were viewed as less likely to be hired and less likely to be good leaders. For men, using communal language had no impact on their evaluations—only women were negatively evaluated for using it.

The use of communal language did not impact the perceptions of job candidates applying for the human resources position. Only women who were applying for the more male-oriented IT manager position were penalized for using communal language.

As a result the researchers suggest that women may want to review their résumés, particularly if they are applying to jobs in male-dominated fields. “Female applicants should carefully assess their word choice and consider reducing the amount of communal language on their résumés, particularly for prototypically masculine-typed jobs,” the researchers recommend.

However, a body of previous research suggests women should be cautious about presenting themselves only in an aggressive or ambitious light. Women who do so can take a hit to their likability, which may, in turn, impact a hiring decision. The research studies on résumés did not assess likability of the job candidates.

Women are expected to be nurturing and mother-like, regardless of whether they have children. Women who don’t fit this mold are often seen as overly aggressive. Ambitious and assertive women like Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi have been labeled with derogatory terms like “nasty.” Hillary Clinton was called “unstable” and “unhinged” when she was seeking the presidency. Awareness of this bias against ambitious women is likely what’s driving women to soften their résumés with more communal language.

As a result of these stereotypes, women face a double-edged sword. If they present themselves using only words that reflect their assertiveness and ambitions, they could take a hit to their likability or perceptions of their warmth. If they add the softer, communal language, they risk not getting the job. More research needs to be done to determine if there is an optimal amount of this language to include on résumés.
