#QuestionforGroup : Why Do Companies Treat Their Employees Differently On-Boarding In vs. Transitioning them Out of the Company? ….. Question: Do They?

September 25, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Introduction

In thе intricatе tapеstry of еmployее managеmеnt, companies еmploy distinct stratеgiеs whеn it comеs to onboarding nеw tеam mеmbеrs and transitioning еmployееs out of thе organization. This articlе vеnturеs into thе captivating rеalm of corporatе dynamics to uncovеr thе undеrlying rеasons bеhind thеsе contrasting approachеs.

From building a sеnsе of bеlonging to safеguarding propriеtary information, we’ll dеlvе dееp into why companies trеat thеir еmployееs diffеrеntly during thеsе pivotal phasеs of thеir carееrs, sееking to undеrstand how career consultancy plays a role in these strategies.

  • Protеcting Confidеntial Information

During the transitioning process, companies walk a tightropе to safеguard sеnsitivе data and intеllеctual property. Considеr a scеnario whеrе a dеparting еmployее, “Emily,“ has had accеss to propriеtary softwarе dеvеlopmеnt plans. Thе company must еnsurе controllеd accеss and vigilant monitoring to prеvеnt any unauthorizеd dissеmination of thеsе vital company sеcrеts. Bеyond accеss control, it involvеs a comprеhеnsivе data еxit stratеgy.

This strategy еncompassеs idеntifying and cataloging sеnsitivе data, еnsuring data еncryption during transfеr, and promptly tеrminating accеss upon an еmployее’s dеparturе. It may also include thе usе of confidеntiality agrееmеnts to undеrscorе thе importancе of data sеcurity.

Employее managеmеnt is a continuous commitmеnt that еxtеnds bеyond an еmployее’s dеparturе, tеstamеnt to a company’s dеdication to wеll-bеing and succеss—striking thе proper balancе bеtwееn onboarding and transitioningpavеs thе way for a brightеr futurе.

  • Mitigating Lеgal Risks

Thе dеparturе of an еmployее oftеn brings lеgal considеrations to thе front. Companiеs trеad carefully to avoid potential issues that can arise during this phasе, such as non-disclosurе agrееmеnts, non-compеtе clausеs, or compliancе with labor laws. Imaginе a scеnario whеrе a dеparting еmployее, “John,“ has a non-compеtе clausе in his contract. Compliancе bеcomеs paramount to stееr clеar of lеgal еntanglеmеnts.

Lеgal compliancе еxtеnds to thе propеr handling of еxit intеrviеws, sеvеrancе agrееmеnts, and final paychеcks; it also еntails mеticulous documentation and rеcord-kееping to dеmonstratе adhеrеncе to lеgal obligations.

  • Managing Employее Moralе

It’s no sеcrеt that thе еxit of a collеaguе can affеct tеam moralе. Considеr a scеnario whеrе a long-standing tеam mеmbеr, “Susan,“ is lеaving thе company. Companiеs must handlе transitions discrееtly and profеssionally to mitigatе any nеgativе impact. Maintaining a positive work environment is vital for thе rеmaining еmployееs, as it еnsurеs continuеd productivity and motivation.

Effеctivеly managing еmployее moralе involvеs opеn and rеspеctful communication with thе dеparting еmployее to еnsurе thеy lеavе with dignity and rеspеct. It also еntails addrеssing quеstions and concerns from thе rеmaining tеam mеmbеrs, rеassuring thеm about thе company’s stability and commitmеnt to thеir wеll-bеing.

Additionally, fostеring a sеnsе of tеam rеsiliеncе and support can hеlp еmployееs copе with thе dеparturе of a collеaguе and adapt to thе changеs in thеir work еnvironmеnt.

#JobSearch : What To Expect In The Job Market From Now Until The End Of 2023. Job Openings Declined to Their Lowest Level in Over Two Years. Great Read!

With mounting economic uncertainty causing many employers to pull back on hiring plans, the job market appears to have cooled from its red-hot pandemic recovery pace earlier in the year. Hiring fell 3.6% in August across almost all sectors compared to July, making it the third month in a row of hiring declines, according to LinkedIn’s State of the Labor Market report. Hiring in the United States remains down 23.8% year-over-year.

Data analysis from LinkedIn shows that almost all industries are facing their own unique hiring challenges. The wholesale sector recorded a 13.9% month-to-month drop in employment. Additionally, the retail industry faced a 10.7% month-to-month decline in hiring, while food services saw a 6.7% decrease, which could reflect shifting consumer attitudes. The financial sector experienced 7.1% less hiring amidst “complex market dynamics and regulatory changes.”

This summer, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that job openings declined to their lowest level in over two years. Vacancies dropped to 8.827 million in July from 9.165 million in June.

Hiring Intentions For Q4

In closing out 2023, employers intend to execute a calculated approach to hiring, according to the latest ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey.

“The data for Q4 reveals employers continue to plan measured hiring despite economic uncertainties,” said ManpowerGroup chairman and CEO Jonas Prising. “Globally, employers are beginning to moderate their hiring post-pandemic with many focused on recruiting and retaining the business-critical skills they need to drive growth.”

The information technology industry looks like a bright spot for employment in the fourth quarter, with 39% of companies intending to hire within this space, followed by financials and real estate (33%), communication services (31%), healthcare and life sciences (31%) and energy and utilities (31%).

According to the report, employers said they are more willing to bring aboard candidates who are older and seeking employment changes (34%), have been unemployed due to caretaking responsibilities (27%), have non-linear career paths (27%) or are long-term unemployed (26%).

Beyond possessing the requisite technical skills, hiring managers and bosses ranked the critical soft skills they look for in a job applicant: communication, collaboration and teamwork (39%); accountability and reliability (33%); reasoning and problem-solving (29%); active learning and curiosity (23%) and resilience, stress tolerance and adaptability (23%).

Knowing the temperature and mood of the job market can help you better plan for your next career move and manage your expectations.

Your Job Strategy For Year-End

If you are considering a job switch or moving up the corporate ladder, start by thinking about your short and long-term career goals and what you want to achieve in the remaining months of 2023 and into the new year.

Update your résumé, polish up your LinkedIn profile, clean up your social media footprint and create a game plan for your job search. Let trusted co-workers know you are open to making a move and ask them for job leads. Tap into your network by reaching out to former colleagues, mentors, family, friends, college alums and other tight and loose contacts.

Subtly use the upcoming holidays as an excuse to reach out to people who can potentially help you with the search. Most people will stop looking for a new job once the holiday season commences. That’s good news, as the competition starts dwindling.

If you are looking to advance your career within your current company, focus on getting noticed by key executives to receive a positive annual review.

Use the end of the year to prepare for performance reviews or goal-setting meetings with your manager. Politely ask your boss for any feedback or constructive criticism so you will have time to course correct over the next few months. Also, communicate any goals, new assignments or projects you want to get involved with, as it can further your career.

Ask supervisors and managers to put in a good recommendation—either in writing or verbally. Remember to keep track of all your accomplishments, wins and times that you went above and beyond and greatly exceeded expectations. Put together a list of all the reasons why you should get a promotion, raise and a big end-of-year bonus.

#JobSearch : The Best Job Boards To Get You Hired In 2023. Guess Which is the Best/Largest? You’re On It. LinkedIn.

September 16, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

There are hundreds of job boards out there all claiming to hold the ticket to your dream job. While having lots of options can be enticing, sometimes the more specific you get, the higher your chances of success become.

If you’ve been looking for a guide to the best job boards out there, you have come to the right place. Here’s my list of favorites, along with their pros and specialties, to help you land the career that you deserve. Let’s dive in!

LinkedIn (For Building Connections)

LinkedIn is the most popular job board site in the world, and for good reason. This social network slash job posting site goes beyond just jobs and helps you build connections with recruiters and hiring managers in the industries you’ve got your eyes set on.

LinkedIn allows you to:

  • Connect with potential companies, previous colleagues, and alumni from your university
  • Get endorsed for your skills and network with managers from the same field
  • Upload your resume, personalize your profile, and create your own personal brand
  • Get access to trainings and best practices in your field to help you stand out

The feature that most candidates best know LinkedIn for is the “Easy Apply” button but I think it is often overused. Instead of spamming apply for different roles, I actually recommend you take it a step further and first connect with the hiring team directly.

You can send a note like this to the recruiter when sending them a connection request:

Hi NAME,

I saw your team was recruiting for <ROLE> and I’d love to be considered.

I spent the last <# YEARS WITH COMPANY> and some of my big wins include <ACHIEVEMENTS IN YOUR ROLE>. My core skills are in <RELEVANT SKILLS FOR THE ROLE> and I think I’d be a great fit for the role you have on hand.

Let me know if you are free for a call later this week to discuss further. Thank you for your time!

Best,

YOUR NAME

Glassdoor (For Company Reviews)

Glassdoor is another site with one of the largest volumes of job postings from all sorts of different industries. With Glassdoor’s company information, you can get an insider’s peek into the company culture, type of management, career mobility and work-life balance. And that’s on top of the info you get on salary, total compensation details, and benefits.

Glassdoor comes with free and paid versions, with the latter giving you access to more advanced analytics to help you decide better if the job fits you well. And if you’re looking for companies that tick all the boxes for an overall fulfilling career, be sure to check out Glassdoors’ list of Best Places to Work.

Getwork (For Verified Jobs)

With the rise of job search scams, it’s important to stay vigilant out there on different job boards. It’s crucial you are reviewing jobs that are real and verified. That’s where Getwork comes into play. Getwork sources the job postings directly from the hiring company’s careers page and provides you details about the role including information on salary range, remote opportunities, company background, and more.

Wellfound (For Startups)

Originally known as AngelList, Wellfound is the best place to find roles for hot, new startups. Also, the interface is clean, hip and fun, much like the job environment it promotes. From engineering jobs at AI companies to operations at emerging FinTech firms, Wellfound has a little bit of everything when it comes to the world’s best startups. Beyond the role, you can also find a lot of information on the company, its founders, and how much capital they have raised. It’s a good idea to target some of these companies that have just raised money because you know they will be in growth mode!

RemoteOK (For Remote Work)

If you’re done with the office forever, then I suggest you check out RemoteOK for remote work opportunities. The site offers a heap of different jobs that are freelance and remote to give you that leeway to do other things, and have control of your daily workflow. Flexibility is the name of the game when you search for jobs and gigs on RemoteOK. While they mainly focus on tech roles, there are also lots of great opportunities in account management, finance, operations, and more.

Choose What’s Best For You

There are many factors that you have to consider in choosing and applying for a new job — the salary, work hours, location and/or remote, the values the company holds, your manager, and more.

But the key to unlocking the door to the right job for you is you knowing what you are looking for in the first place. With a clear set of your values and priorities, it will be easier for you to review these job board sites and find the dream job you’ve always wanted!

#JobSearch : LinkedIn Executive Reveals New Features To Get Discovered. Secret: There are Three Things Jobseekers Can Do with Their Profiles. A MUst REad!

September 14, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Donning a black waistcoat and reclining comfortably in a corner chair edged against the floor length window of his San Francisco office, Rohan Rajiv, LinkedIn’s new Director of Product Management and the brains behind the candidate experience on the platform, was ready to spill all the details.

He had just recently released some ground-breaking features on LinkedIn to fast-track jobseekers’ success with the platform and was already witnessing incredible results and feedback. But Rajiv was no stranger to product management in the career development space. He had been in the business of designing and managing job-search-centered optimization products for over 15 years, with a rather brief sprint in between at a boutique management consulting firm.

There are now approximately 61 million job-seekers searching for roles via LinkedIn weekly, with eight offers to candidates every minute; and Rajiv, who leads a team of dedicated product managers focused solely on the job search experience, had tons of advice to share.

“Rohan, what tips would you recommend to job-seekers to become more discoverable on the platform?” I asked, leaning intently, to which down-to-earth Rajiv cheekily retorted, “Do you want the 30-second answer or the 3-minute answer?”

Well, 3-minute answer it was!  “The way I look at it,” he began, “there are three things jobseekers can do with their profiles.

“First, you need to create an identity so the LinkedIn community knows you exist and can reach out to you for opportunities. Second, you need to open your identity to a world of recruiters who are all using enterprise products to search for candidates. Finally, you can apply for jobs and express your interest tangibly. But it always begins with having a complete profile; that’s essential.”

The LinkedIn director explained that he and his team are focused on helping jobseekers tell the story of their skills, and therefore have made recent improvements that make it easier for these skills to be expressed and noticed.

“We’ve added features such as Top Skills in your ‘About’ section (this highlights 4-5 skills you most want to be known for). You can also add skills to your education, experience, and projects, to provide context.”

Gone are the days of trying to explain your transferable skills to recruiters. LinkedIn has done it all for you. Rajiv added that the new LinkedIn feature would ease customers’ fears about not getting hired. “The next thing is super unique to LinkedIn, and this really changes how you are discovered.”

He then introduced three game-changing tools on LinkedIn that are available to everybody, free of charge:

Open to work

“It’s a bit like raising your hand and shouting out ‘I’m here!’ isn’t it?” We both laughed and said the same thing simultaneously.

“Exactly,” he agreed, “and recruiters find this valuable. This increases your chances of receiving an InMail 2x.”

I had a nagging question I just had to get to the bottom of while chatting with Rajiv. What if one decided to turn the open-to-work frame on to just recruiters only? Will it still be effective?

“The frame adds a sense of urgency and gets the community involved; however the frame is not for everybody. It’s only beneficial if you want to amplify your intent,” he explained.

Resume visibility

“People can switch on a setting that permits them to make the details of their resume available to recruiters when they search for certain keywords,” Rajiv continued. “It will show keywords from both on their profile and resume.”

‘I’m Interested’

Rajiv’s face began to really light up and his eyes sparked as he announced his new product launch called “I’m interested,” initially released six months ago. I could tell this was his favorite feature by far, as he made certain to tell me this was something he was really excited about.

“This feature is for employers who want to grow their employer brand on LI; they have a button called “I’m interested” which allows you as a potential candidate to be in their talent pool. It has completed roll-out in May, and so far, we’re seeing a lot of traction and response from members and influencers on TikTok. It has really caught on, so now recruiters can hear back from people who’ve already expressed interest.”

But that’s not all.

Rajiv announced that there was even more in store for LinkedIn Premium members.

Turbocharge with LinkedIn Premium’s new features

“We have our free offering that is available to everybody and has significant value. But for those who choose our Premium offerings, we have a bunch of stuff that turbocharges success. For example, we now have AI assisted profile descriptions to guide you as you complete your profile.”

“There is also AI-assisted messaging for InMails to recruiters.”

By now my jaw had dropped wide open.

“This is still rolling out so you’re getting it hot off the press, no pun intended,” he added with another good-natured laugh.

Top Choice

“With LinkedIn Premium, you have access to a very unique feature called Top Choice. Top Choice Jobs gives job seekers the ability to mark a job as a top choice when applying through Easy Apply,” Rajiv continued,” signaling to recruiters that you have strong interest in a job they’ve posted and can increase your visibility. In fact – job seekers are 43% more likely to hear back from the recruiter for the jobs they are most interested in when using the Top Choice Jobs feature.”

Actively hiring

This tool is rolling out this month. Rajiv and his team are currently rolling out a new tool to Premium subscribers so you can now filter your people search by those who are “Actively Hiring” in or outside your network.

“But what about when you are about to apply for a job, and it already has 200 or 300 applicants? Are the numbers sometimes flawed? How accurate are those numbers?” I was curious to know.

“There are two kinds of ‘applies’ on LinkedIn; one takes you to a website, and the other is ‘easy apply.’ Easy apply is always accurate but the others may or may not have followed through with their application.”

As the interview wound to a close and Rajiv was within sight of his lunch break, I quizzed, “Is there anything exciting coming up with LinkedIn products that you’re able to leak to the public?”

Full of humor, Rajiv chuckled, “We are rolling out so many features so fast within the past six months alone, so watch this space.” Peering out into the window, the director’s passion for the LinkedIn community, was clear: “It’s a really special thing to come to work knowing we have a shot at helping people find work.”

Who knows what may be on our profiles six months from now?

#JobIntereviewingQuestions : How To Answer The 3 Most Annoying Interview Questions. Got Interview? MUst REad!

September 12, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

The day you’ve been waiting for is here. Today is your first round interview for that role you’ve been eyeing for a long time now. Your resume and cover letter have already done their job to get you noticed for the interview. And now, it’s time to shine in the recruiter screen!

But of course, it’s not just a straight shot to the hiring manager round. You still have to answer the questions that the recruiter has prepared.

Most of the time, recruiter screens are just a way to see if you are a good fit and can do the job, and will typically go through a set of common interview questions including: “Tell me about yourself,” “Why do you want this role,” etc.

With that said, there are always going to be a few questions that can cause you to stumble. I’ve coached thousands of candidates in the past, so let me help you run through the 3 most annoying questions and how best to answer them.

1. What Is Your Biggest Weakness?

This might seem like a trick question at first. But answering it truthfully and with self-awareness can actually gain you some bonus points and eventually that nod in approval for the next round. Because let’s face it — nobody’s perfect. Even your potential boss has their own set of weaknesses.

The biggest takeaway here is to not try to force your “weakness” to look like a strength. The old lines of “I am a perfectionist” or “I am too obsessed with the details,” can actually bite you on the other end and come off as a red flag. They might also sound scripted or insincere, which is the last thing you want to do to impress a future employer.

You are better off giving an honest answer that shows you are self-aware and working on making improvements. Some examples include things like getting the jitters before a big presentation or having limited knowledge of working with a specific tool. Some may also say they take too long to adapt to a change in environment, or a difficulty managing their expectations of their manager.

The golden rule to all of this is to turn the tables to how you are working on improving it. You can say things such as you are working on your stage fright by attending weekly meetings at a local Toastmaster, taking a mental break when you’re overwhelmed, or blocking off time to learn a new tool to help you at work. It’s normal to have weaknesses, but what sets the winners apart is how they embrace their weaknesses and look forward to getting better.

2. Why Did You Leave Your Last Role?

There are a variety of reasons why people leave their jobs. There are some good ones and some not-so-good ones. When you encounter a question about why you’re switching from one job to another (see, that’s why you’re applying!), you must avoid badmouthing your former or current employer at all costs.

You see, this is not about them. The interview concerns you and your potential new job. Whatever you might have experienced with your past employer will most likely be of no concern to your future boss. Furthermore, talking more about your strengths and evolving interests will be more relevant in answering this question.

All companies would prefer hiring a dreamer who innovates and expands their horizons. So you could say that you’re leaving your former job to find some more room for growth and development. Here’s a sample answer that may help:

“I have had some great experiences in my career and, at this point, am really looking to take my skills in Data Analytics to the next level.

I learned a ton from my last manager but felt that I hit a plateau with my development after spending the last 3 years there. This role popped up on my LinkedIn feed, and it just seems like an incredible opportunity to learn from experts in this field. Really excited to learn more today.”

In the end, it is important to recognize that your former employer contributed considerably to your professional growth, but all things, even the good ones, reach their end. And by that time, it’s time to start a new journey.

3. What Is Your Current Salary (And Expectations)?

It’s not always about the money, but of course, it matters. Usually, towards the end of the interview, your interviewer will ask you what your current salary is and your expectations. Before you say anything, take a pause and aim to make this a conversation, not a confrontation.

The best case scenario is that you follow up and ask them first what their budget is for this specific role, and they give you a range. And from there, you can give them feedback if it’s aligned with what you are looking for.

It doesn’t always work this way, though, and they may expect you to be the one that gives the first number out. If that’s the case, do your part to stay calm and work with them, not against them. Let them know you are happy to discuss salary and expectations after you know more about the role and after both sides agree that it may be a good fit.

This is also where your research comes in handy, so you know what other companies are paying for similar roles in this industry. Knowing your market value can give you a good feel for how to negotiate your salary moving forward. Some of the best resources out there to check salary information are Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, and Salary.com.

And remember that our goal here is never to lie! Being truthful and sincere about what you know, and don’t know will always work out for you in the long run. Knowing who you are, and all the value you bring to the table will ultimately guide you towards your ideal career path. If you’re looking for more resources, get our free Interview Kit and get prepared to nail that interview!

#JobSearch : 5 Steps To Get Hired During The September Surge. Best Months for Candidates are at the Beginning of the Year, Spring, and of Course, September.

September 10, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

You may have seen the trend all over your TikTok feed or in recent articles — the September Surge for hiring is here. Most recruiters, hiring managers, and career coaches agree: now is the best time to update your resumes and start hunting for a new role if you want to land one by the end of the year.

So what is this September Surge? It refers to the uptick in hiring that occurs in the last quarter of the year. The surge happens because of two things. First: hiring managers and recruiters are mostly back now from their summer vacations. And second: Many companies and brands have a remaining budget to accelerate hiring and help hit certain revenue targets as the year ends. This way, they can end the year on a high and have a complete team that’s ready to hit the ground running early next year.

I’ve been in the HR and recruitment space for the better part of the decade, and have seen the best months for candidates are typically at the beginning of the year, Spring, and of course, September. If you’ve been in the market for new opportunities, your time is going to come sooner rather than later, especially if you follow these five tips to get hired during the September Surge.

1. Get specific on what you want

Remember rage-applying? Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend it. While it’s true that you shouldn’t pin your hopes on just one or two applications, you also shouldn’t go and just hit “easy apply” to every open role either.

It may feel counterintuitive, but the more narrowed and specific you get on what you want the more, the higher your chances become of actually landing it. What I recommend is for you to make a list of all the great qualities you are looking for in this next role. Here are some questions to help you get started:

  • What kind of company do you want to work for?
  • How would you describe what your ideal manager and team look like?
  • What skills do you want to flex in this role?
  • What projects and type of work do you not want to do?
  • Where would you like to be located?

Once you get clear on the type of role you want, why you would be a good fit, and how you can contribute, that is when the magic happens. Get specific and make a list of your target roles & companies before progressing forward.

2. Get your resume ready and tailored for the role

You already know the job market is uber competitive these days so don’t disqualify yourself with a bland, generic resume.

Think of it this way: Recruiters will be sifting through hundreds of resumes for a single job post. They’ll be skimming through pages and pages of resume to focus on certain key qualifications and experiences that match the job description. And if your resume is not highlighting the things they are looking for, your chances are pretty much zero on landing an interview.

So how do you ensure that your resume stands out from the others?

You don’t have to go all out and create something wildly creative here but use what is tried and true. You can download our free, simple, ATS-friendly resume template from our website here.

Next, read the job post thoroughly and put yourself in the hiring manager’s shoes. What kind of skills and experiences are they looking for in this candidate? Now that you know that, try to use their language, the same keywords and skills. Anything you can do to make the recruiter’s job easier will work in your favor, I guarantee it.

Then proofread for any silly errors. Make sure there are no typo errors and even get a friend or two to read your resume and check for anything that can be revised.

3. Research the company and get connected with decision makers

The next part is how you stand out even further. You can dramatically increase your chances of being noticed by deeply researching the company and getting connected with decision makers.

Start by digging deep into the company’s website, social media profiles, and any recent news articles or press releases. This knowledge will not only help you tailor your application but also impress during upcoming information and actual interviews, demonstrating your genuine interest and commitment to the organization.

You can also look up the company’s decision makers on LinkedIn, and try to hit up a connection with a well-crafted intro. Here’s a template you can use here:

Hi James,

Amazing to see you celebrate your anniversary with [firm name]! Congratulations on your tenure and all your big wins.

I wanted to reach out as I am exploring opportunities with [firm] myself. Would you be available for a call to discuss your experience so far? Thanks so much in advance!

Best,

NAME

Also, if you can, attend industry-related events, conferences, and webinars, as these are excellent opportunities to meet professionals from your desired field, including those within your target companies.

4. Prep for your networking chats and interviews

And then it’s off to the interviews! Getting your resume handpicked from the rest is an excellent opportunity that you shouldn’t miss, so ensure that you’re ready to impress during your networking chats and interviews.

You’ve already done your research about the company, so you probably already know what to say on some level. All that’s left to do is to polish your game through practice.

Research common interview questions and prepare thoughtful responses, but don’t just write your answers on a piece of paper. Write stories that highlight your unique skills and experiences, and relate back to the role you are going for.

Say them out loud and take note of your tone, expression, and body language. It doesn’t matter if you do this alone with a mirror or a friend who can provide some feedback, you just need to get those reps in to get rid of the jitters.

5. Don’t just focus on only one company. Get multiple offers to build leverage.

If you follow the first four tips, you will probably have a line up of interviews coming your way. But the big mistake I want you to avoid is just going all in on one company. While it’s great to have your eyes on the prize, the more options you have, the more leverage you build up.

And saying yes to every suitable interview that you can line up can help ensure that you get the best offer possible. Because the last thing a company wants to do is lose out on great talent to another competitor.

The goal here is to have multiple offers because then you are in the driver’s seat and are able to compare and contrast comp packages, benefits, and the overall culture of each company. If you run across a company that has the best culture-fit but is lacking in total compensation, you can even use other offers to showcase your value and negotiate for a better salary.

Remember, this is not just another job you are after. You are going towards your ideal career and it’s important to think things through with all the information available. So be patient and give yourself the gift of choice.

Bonus Tip: Remember you are a valuable candidate!

It all starts with confidence and knowing that you bring to the table a set of skills that any company would be lucky to have. Most of the time it all just comes down to your stories, timing, and your confidence in yourself, so follow the tips I laid out for you to ensure that you make the most of the September Surge. Rooting for you!

#YourCareer : The Financial Payoff From A College Degree Is Shrinking. Average Salary of College Grads vs High School Diplomas is Falling. Great REad!

August 30, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

A four-year college education is a big and long-term investment, as the 40 million plus Americans who carry $1.6 trillion in federal student debt know all too well. Nevertheless, it can be worth it, because of the college wage premium– the extra salary graduates with four-year college degrees earn over those who have only high school diplomas. In fact, one of the metrics Forbes used to rank the Top 500 Colleges for 2023, is how many months or years of excess wages it takes for alumni of a college to pay off the net cost (after scholarships and discounts) of their degrees.

With payments and interest on federal student debt about to resume after a Covid pandemic moratorium that began in March 2020, the payoff from college is front of mind these days. Which is why an analysis released this week by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco is particularly timely. It shows a flattening of the college wage premium, which grew substantially between 2000 and the 2010s.

This isn’t necessarily bad news. It turns out that pay for college graduates is still increasing. But wages for those who have only high school degrees have been growing faster in the tight labor market of recent years, particularly during the recovery from the brief Covid-19 recession.

The College Wage Premium Is Falling

The percentage difference between average wages earned by workers with four-year college degrees versus those with only a high school diploma is falling.

Leila Bengali, regional policy economist at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank and the lead author of the economic letter, notes conditions in the labor market at the time a teen graduates from high school can affect the decision to go to college. In a tight labor market, for example, a high school graduate might think it’s easier to find a job with solid wages without going to college. But in a slack labor market, “an individual coming out of high school might think, ‘well, there are no jobs and the jobs that are available don’t have very high wages,’ That would then also change the calculus of whether or not to go to college,” she says.

Naturally, the Fed doesn’t encourage such short term thinking since the wage premium (even if compressed) lasts throughout one’s working life. “For most people considering college, the implied increase in lifetime earnings outweighs the cost enough to make college a sound financial investment, often with very high returns,’’ the new analysis notes.
Still, the specifics on how the wage premium has shrunk, and for which groups, are of interest. The San Francisco Fed researchers used data from the U.S. government’s monthly Current Population Survey, which includes wages and hours. They compiled the data over each year to build a larger sample, suitable for analysis based on race and ethnicity.

The Fed economists found a distinctly large college wage premium for Asian workers: Asian college graduates earned more than twice as much as Asian high school graduates, compared with a 70-80% premium for other groups. The researchers attributed that to Asian students’ choices in undergraduate majors, post-graduate degrees and jobs. A Cleveland Fed analysis from 2015 showed more than 30% of Asian degree recipients majored in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), compared with about 16% of white degree recipients, 11% of Black degree recipients and 14% of Hispanic degree recipients. Forbes’ new list of the 25 colleges with the highest earning young alumni is heavily weighted to schools with a large concentration of STEM majors.

Similarly, the recent overall narrowing of the wage premium for a college education looks different when broken down by race. Since 2011, wages for Black and Hispanic high school graduates have grown faster than those for Black and Hispanic college graduates. Meanwhile, wages for white high school graduates and white college graduates have risen at about the same pace, while Asian college graduates have actually widened their premium compared to Asians with only a high school diploma.

In addition to the Census data, there’s anecdotal evidence that good workers without college degrees are in higher demand these days. Some large companies, including GoogleGOOG +0.9%, IBMIBM +0.2% and AccentureACN 0.0%, now offer college degree-free ways into their operations. In 2021, IBM announced it had removed bachelor’s degree requirements for more than half of its job openings in the U.S. In 2021, just 26% of job postings for software QA engineers at Accenture required a degree, according to a report from the Burning Glass Institute. Meanwhile, OracleORCL +0.3% required degrees for 100% of postings for the same position and AppleAAPL +1.9% required degrees in 90% of them.

#BestofFSCBlog : Today’s Job Market, Yeah, Crafting A Compelling Letter Of Interest(Cover Letter) To Ignite Your Job Search is a Good Thing…. Want to Stand Out? Cover Letter is a Good Idea?

August 26, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

“How important are cover letters?” wondered Ashley after hiring a resume writer and realizing most jobs also required to send a cover letter. This is probably the #1 question candidates ask when applying for a job. Many jobs have the cover letter as optional, but it leaves job seekers wondering if they should send it and how much they should customize it.

The simple answer is that it is very important if you want to stand out from the crowd. A well-crafted letter of interest can set you apart from the competition in today’s cut-throat job market. Whether you’re seeking a new opportunity, changing your career path, or simply striving to make a lasting impression, mastering the art of writing a captivating letter of interest can be a game-changer.

Understanding the Purpose of a Letter of Interest

A letter of interest is a crucial tool for expressing your interest in a specific position, company, or industry, even when there’s no formal job opening. The ultimate goal is to leave a lasting impression and position yourself as a valuable asset to the organization. A well-written letter of interest can be highly effective in uncovering unadvertised opportunities and showcasing your proactive initiative.

Although a resume summarizes your skills and experience, a cover letter provides a detailed account of your desire for a specific job and an opportunity to showcase your personality. You can think of the cover letter as the marriage between the prospective job description and your resume: your chance to show your interviewer how well your skills match the job right before the interview.

Sometimes cover letters are optional, but they are always a good way to tailor your experience to the specific job. While it may seem daunting to create a cover letter for every role you apply to, it can force you to be very specific and focused on the job you want to avoid overworking and spreading yourself too thin in the job search. Having a clear understanding of your goals can greatly simplify writing a cover letter.

Writing an outstanding statement of interest

1. Start with Research: Research the company, its values, mission, and recent achievements. This knowledge will enable you to tailor your letter to the organization’s needs and demonstrate your genuine interest.

2. Make Your Opening Engaging: Capture the reader’s attention with a relevant anecdote, striking industry statistic, or thought-provoking question.

3. Showcase Your Value: Highlight your skills, experiences, and accomplishments that align with the company’s requirements. Be specific and focus on how you can contribute to their success.

4. Customize Your Letter: It is important to avoid using generic templates when writing a cover letter. Instead, tailor your letter to the specific company and job you are interested in. This will show your dedication and help you stand out. Elainy Mata emphasizes in Harvard Business Review the importance of writing only one page and, of course, having a template to start, but always tailoring it to make it sound like you and to make it sound like it is only for them.

5. Express Enthusiasm: Clearly state your interest in the organization and the role you’re targeting. Convey your passion for the industry and your excitement about the potential to contribute.

6. Highlight Cultural Fit: Emphasize your alignment with the company’s culture and values. This demonstrates that you’ve done your homework and can seamlessly integrate into their team.

7. Address Needs and Challenges: Address specific challenges the company might be facing and briefly propose how your skills could help tackle those issues.

8. Maintain a Professional Tone: Make sure to maintain a formal and professional tone throughout the letter and proofread for grammar and spelling errors to demonstrate attention to detail.

How to craft a cover letter when switching careers

If you are changing careers, crafting a new cover letter can be challenging. Upwork recommends including in the cover letter the following: your transferable skills, why you are switching careers, your expression of interest/excitement in the company and a powerful closing paragraph.

Crafting a compelling expression of interest

Crafting a compelling Expression of Interest (EOI) is crucial to make your application stand out. These five tips can help you create an EOI that resonates with the hiring company:

  • Identify your unique strengths and experiences that differentiate you from other candidates.
  • Quantify your achievements whenever possible.
  • Strike a balance between confidence and humility.
  • Mention any relevant connections within the company.
  • Conclude your letter with a call to action.

In the ever-evolving job market, a compelling letter of interest can open doors you never knew existed. By meticulously researching the company, tailoring your letter, and effectively showcasing your value, you can leave a lasting impression that sparks curiosity and potential collaboration. Remember, a well-crafted letter of interest is not just a document; it’s your foot in the door to a world of career possibilities.

#YourCareer : How To Get Paid What Your Worth. 70% of Surveyed Workers Do Not Believe they are Paid Fairly. Are You Paid Fairly?

August 24, 2023/in First Sun Blog/by First Sun Team

Ever accepted a job offer and then immediately regretted doing so after realizing you were being underpaid? If so, join the club. According to a Gartner survey of roughly 3,500 workers, nearly 70% of surveyed workers do not believe they are paid fairly.

The key to getting paid fairly is to know your worth and be comfortable asking for what you deserve.  Here are some tips that can help you advocate on your behalf.

Know your market value. Check out websites like salary.com and payscale.com to see what people in your field (and location) are being paid. Call a few headhunters and ask them what the going rate is for someone with your experience. And don’t forget to ask friends, who are in similar roles, what their compensation package consists of. Note: Women should be sure to ask their male colleagues what they’re making, as they may be making more than your female associates.

Be confident. Know what your absolute bottom line is and stick to it. If you receive an offer for less, don’t feel pressured to say yes. See if you can negotiate a better deal. If you can’t, be prepared to move on. An employer paying you less than your worth will undervalue you in other ways.

Don’t share your current or past salary. Some companies will ask you what you’re currently making or ask for your salary history. You don’t have to answer this question. In fact, in some states, this question is illegal. If push comes to shove, turn the question around and ask what the company pays for the position you’re interviewing for. If pressed further, say, “I’m open to a reasonable offer.”

Get comfortable negotiating your pay. A company recruiter will try to pay you as little as possible while you’re going to try to get as much as possible. Be prepared to negotiate and, if need be, settle in the middle.

Be willing to walk away. It’s much easier to stand your ground when you’re willing to walk away from a deal that doesn’t work for you. Don’t be afraid to take yourself out of the running if it appears that a company doesn’t truly value the work that you do.

If you want to get paid what you’re worth, you will need to ask for what you want. Don’t be afraid to let a low ball offer slip through your hands. With more searching and networking, you are bound to find a job that meets or exceeds your salary goals.
